WIN 12-6

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have claimed their second victory in as many weeks, defeating the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks 12-6 at ANZ Stadium in Round 24 of the NRL Telstra Premiership. The grinding victory over the high-flying Sharks was arguably the Rabbitohs strongest defensive showing in 2016, with the side holding the Shire-based side to six points despite facing significant pressure throughout the match. Difficult conditions combined with strong showings in defence ensured that neither side would have an impact on the scoreboard in the early stages of the encounter. However, it appeared that the Rabbitohs had claimed the first points of the match when Ben Barba was caught in his in-goal area before offloading the ball into the hands of John Sutton, who grounded the ball, only for the veteran to be denied due to an offside ruling. With the rain falling consistently, both sides looked to control the match through their kicking games, forcing the opposition to work the ball out of their half whilst also applying pressure through the use of high kicks. South Sydney were dealt a major blow when halfback, Adam Reynolds was taken from the field after a head clash with Sharks skipper, Wade Graham. Reynolds would take no further part in the game due to the incident. Despite the absence of their chief playmaker, the Rabbitohs would continue their strong start to the match, as Cody Walker took on the line, stepping off his left foot to beat the Sharks defence and draw first blood in the 33rd minute of the match. Damien Cook added the extras leaving the score at 6-0 in favour of South Sydney. The Rabbitohs would extend their lead courtesy of a penalty goal to Damien Cook on the siren, with the score line sitting at 8-0 heading into the break. On resumption, the Rabbitohs would be dealt another blow, as Kyle Turner was escorted off the field with a leg injury. Despite this, South Sydney continued to impress in defence, with the Red and Greens absorbing the constant pressure that was placed on their goal line. The Sharks would eventually open their account in the 53rd minute when Wade Graham ran a well-directed line to pierce through a hole in the Rabbitohs defence. James Maloney made no mistake with the kick, reducing the deficit to two points at 8-6. An arm-wrestle would ensue, with both sides displaying desperation in attack and defence to remain in the contest. It would not be until the final minute of the match that the result was put beyond doubt when Joe Burgess showcased his athleticism to score in the corner and seal the result.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 24

v Cronulla-Sutherland, Mon Aug 22 4:45pm

LOSS 16-18

Late Changes - Souths were 1-17

The South Sydney Rabbitohs NYC side have been defeated 16-18 by the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in a thriller at ANZ Stadium tonight (Monday). With both sides controlling periods of the match in difficult conditions, the Sharks would eventually claim a thrilling victory despite a late comeback from the spirited Rabbitohs who had a chance to draw level after the siren. The scoring would be opened off the back of consecutive penalties to the Sharks, as Josh Tuilagi made the most of the overlap to cross out wide. Rhys Davies was unable to add the extras for the visitors as the score remained 4-0. It would not take long for the Rabbitohs to bounce back and register their first points of the match, with Jacob McCudden showing great strength close to the line to barge over. O’Donnell was gifted the simplest of conversions to give his side a 6-4 lead. The Rabbitohs would back up their opening effort with a second four-pointer soon after, courtesy of back to back penalties which would see Bailey Shiach-Wise stroll over the try-line untouched. O’Donnell was unable to back up his previous effort with the boot, meaning the score would remain 10-4 in favour of the home side. Despite a strong period from the home side, the Sharks would claw their way back into the contest as Isaac Lumelume took on the Rabbitohs defence to reduce the deficit for his side. Davies could not level the score as his conversion attempt from the sideline was waved away, with the score remaining 10-8. With half-time looming, the Sharks would reclaim the lead through Sione Katoa, with the winger showing some pace to beat his defender out wide. These would prove to be the final points of the half as the sides went into the break with the visitors leading 12-10. On resumption, both teams struggled to capitalise on their attacking opportunities in the wet conditions. Despite this, Lachlan Stein would score in the 50th minutes, showing speed and agility to breach the Rabbitohs defence and cross next to the uprights. Davies added the extras to extend his sides lead beyond a converted try at 18-10. The wet weather woes continued throughout the second-half as both sides struggled to impact the scoreboard. Tarquinn Butler would eventually break the try-scoring drought, crossing in the 78th minute to keep his side in the game. O’Donnell added the extras to reduce the margin to two points at 18-16. Chad O’Donnell would have a chance to draw level with a penalty goal on the siren, but the half-back was unable to add the two points as the Sharks claimed a tight victory.

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership Round 23

v Newtown, Henson Park, Sat Aug 22 3:00pm

LOSS 12-16

Late Changes - Talakai, Tyrrell and Schaumkel were out, Tasi starts wing, Mociedreke centers, Travers five-eighth, Seijka and Houghton prop, Murray and Mauala second row, Siolo, Miski and Jamel Hunt on the bench.

A tough, brutal, finals-like contest took place at Henson Park, when the Newtown Jets downed the North Sydney Bears with an incredible buzzer-beating try by Jacob Gagan, to steal the game 16-12. Josh Cleeland was easily the most dangerous player on the park, but all 34 players on the field must be credited for never backing down in what was such a high-intensity encounter, which is sure to be one of the games of 2016. The Jets now slide into the top four with one round remaining, while the Bears will sweat on other results to see if they remain in the top eight before their much-anticipated do-or-die clash with the Canterbury Bulldogs next weekend. The win also means that the Frank Hyde Shield will remain in Newtown for the next year. It took both kickers a few minutes to shake the cobwebs, as the Bears’ first kick went out on the full, and Cleeland’s attacking grubber was far too big and rolled dead without any Jets player getting close. The Jets had consecutive sets attacking the Bears line, mainly due to North Sydney not completing their sets at the start of the match, however they beautifully defended their errors and withstood the Jets’ attack. North Sydney had their first real chance to attack by getting a penalty in front of the posts, and they decided to take the gift two-points to take a 2-0 lead despite the Jets dominating in field position and possession. All of the previous defending paid off for the Bears at the 20 minute mark, as Eli Levido created an overlap with a ball to Sitiveni Moceidreke, who broke free of the Jets’ grasp while on the attack before offloading to Tautalatasi Tasi to cross the try-line. Levido missed the goal that meant the Bears had a 6-0 lead, but off the kick-off set, the try-scorer was hit awkwardly in a tackle, badly injuring his knee and had to be assisted from the field. The Bears gave away continuous penalties until the referee had enough, and on the eleventh penalty of the afternoon in just the 26th minute, Patrice Siolo was sent to the sin bin and the Jets were playing with an extra man. It seemed the Bears were going to get away with having 12 men on the field without conceding a point, but a fractured Bears defence allowed Josh Cleeland to step through and score in the ninth minute of Siolo’s spell on the sideline. The kick was missed which meant the Bears led 6-4 at halftime. The Bears started the second half defensively perfect, and they were rewarded for this effort 10 minutes into the second half when Dane Nielsen made a 50-metre dash down the left sideline. They swung the ball right on the next tackle, and Abbas Miski finished off the try in the corner to extend their lead to 10-4. Newtown hit back on the hour mark when Josh Cleeland put a grubber down the short side, and Nielsen spilled the ball while back-tracking to retrieve it, and it bounced into the arms of Jacob Gagan who locked up the scores after Fa’amanu Brown perfectly converted. The next 10 minutes were incredibly tense, but the second penalty of the half was blown in prime field possession for the Jets, who slotted a penalty goal to take a 12-10 lead in the 70thminute. Jack Siejka collided into the hip Junior Roqica shortly afterwards, and after a long delay, had to be assisted off the field. The Bears eventually marched up-field, and alike the Jets just moments before, they were gifted a penalty in range, and Levido slotted the two-points to lock up the scores with six minutes remaining. Levido beautifully struck a 40-metre field-goal attempt which missed to the left, but on the seven-tackle set, the Jets dropped the ball inside their half, giving the Bears a chance in the dying minutes. Levido had a second-shot, but some last-ditch pressure from Matt McIlwrick meant the crafty halfback sprayed it to the right. Off the seven-tackle set, the Jets marched all the way up-field and a mix-up blew the field goal chance. However, in the dying second, Cleeland shifted the ball right to Arana Taumata, who put a perfect grubber in for Gagan, who somehow was the first man to the ball and planted the ball down for the match-winning try.
