WIN 34-12
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have raced away to a six-tries-to-two, 34 points to 12, victory over the Newcastle Knights at Hunter Stadium today (Sunday) in front of 15,212 Members and supporters. The Rabbitohs won by 22 points in the end despite a spirited display from the home side, however Souths were dominant from start to finish. Captain Greg Inglis was the first to score for South Sydney when Adam Reynolds grubber kicked through the line on the Rabbitohs’ third repeat set in Knights territory. Inglis grabbed the bouncing ball above his head and acrobatically grounded it just centimetres inside the dead ball line for the four-pointer. Reynolds converted to give the Rabbitohs a six-nil lead after nine minutes. The Rabbitohs kept the pressure on the Knights, however some loose handling thwarted a number of scoring chances for the men in red and green. The Rabbitohs finally turned the pressure into points with Alex Johnston on the end of a beautiful backline movement to score in the right hand corner in the 29th minute, taking the score to ten-nil in favour of the visitors. Two minutes later Inglis made a huge bust up the middle of the field, only to see Damien Cook put the ball down with the line wide open, closing out another opportunity for the Rabbitohs to register points. In the 38th minute, Adam Reynolds ran right and snap kicked back to the left, finding Cody Walker on the full who raced under the black dot to score. Reynolds converted from in front to take the score line to 16-0 at the half time break. The Rabbitohs were the dominant side in both attack and defence in the first 40 minutes, and would be looking to turn in the same, if not improved, performance over the second 40 minutes of the game. Souths only took four minutes to register points in the second half, when centre Aaron Gray scored a well-deserved try, charging hard and straight between defenders to score to the left of the posts. Reynolds converted to give the Rabbitohs a 22-0 lead after 45 minutes of play. The Knights registered their first points in the 54th minute when debutant Dylan Phythian, who had been on the field only for a couple of minutes, dived over from dummy half to score a soft try. Trent Hodkinson’s conversion reduced the deficit to 16 points for the home side. The Knights’ try sparked the Rabbitohs into action again, and three minutes later Sam Burgess crashed over adjacent to the uprights, wrestling away from two defenders to score. Reynolds added the extras to restore the 22-point lead. Alex Johnston scored his second try of the game, and arguably the easiest of his career, when Adam Reynolds put in a cross field kick to an unmarked ‘AJ’ who strolled over into the right hand corner. Reynolds converted from the touchline to extend the lead to 34-6 with 15 minutes left on the clock. The edges started to fray in the final 15 minutes with a push-and-shove breaking out after Cody Walker finished off a tackle on Dane Gagai. The Knights scored a late consolation try to fullback Jake Mamo, who broke the line, chip kicked for himself and scored. The retiring Jeremy Smith added the extras to take the score line to 34-12 with four minutes left on the clock. The Rabbitohs were dominant throughout the contest and only poor handling on a few occasions prevented the winning margin from being greater.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs NYC side went down 32-12 to the Newcastle Knights at Hunter Stadium on Sunday afternoon despite a strong second half performance. The Knights were quick to land the first points for the day when a battle for ball possession in goal saw the Knights Tyrone Amey beat the Rabbitohs defender and score in the third minute. The Knights conversion was successful and the home side led six points to nil. The Knights were there again to add another four-pointer when an almost replicate set play saw Amey jump on another loose ball in goal and led to the front rower’s second try for the game. Nick Newman had an easy shot right in front of goal and slotted the conversion through the uprights. The home side were quick to impress their old boy’s crowd at Hunter Stadium and extended their lead further through two converted tries by Zac Hosking bringing the Knights 24 points in front. Within minutes before half time, the Rabbitohs responded and hooker Phoenix Hunt found the try line through a gap in the Knights defence. Chad O’Donnell successfully converted. The Rabbitohs once again narrowed the gap when Campbell Graham picked up a cross field bomb on the right side of the field and with quick footwork found the try line as the hooter sounded for half time. The Rabbitohs went into the sheds trailing 12 points to 24. The second half saw the Knights strike first through Kainoa Gudgeon with a try scored in the right hand corner. The Rabbitohs placed immense pressure on the Knights defence but the side struggled to capitalise on their chances. Although possession was in the Rabbitohs favour in the second half, the side couldn’t catch the fierce Newcastle team who awarded their second try to Gudgeon on full time.

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership Round 24
v Canterbury-Bankstown, North Sydney Oval, Sat Aug 28 3:00pm
LOSS 6-10

The defence of the Canterbury Bulldogs has secured an Intrust Super Premiership NSW finals position that looked incredibly unlikely at the start of the season. It was a determined and gutsy effort by both sides, with the low score-line a true representation of the defensive prowess shown. The game went down to the wire, and a controversial offside call in the dying minutes turned out to be the last North Sydney Bears play of 2016. Both sides had scoring opportunities at the start of the match, in a game that started with a very end-to-end style. The Bulldogs dropped the ball over the line, and had a potential Jarrod McInally try denied through obstruction, while the Bears could not capitalise on consecutive sets. Latrell Robinson pulled off an amazing play at the 20-minute mark while retrieving a Bulldogs grubber. He collected the ball very close to the sideline, back-tracked into the in-goal area to seemingly get pushed out, but he ducked and weaved through the defenders to make a 30-metre run. After half-an-hour of play, the Bulldogs finally got the scoreboard ticking when Harrison Siejka decided to run the ball on the last tackle, and have a beautiful short-ball to McInally, who crashed over. Siosifa Talakai copped a bad knock in a tackle, and after a small delay, was assisted off the field to do a concussion test, however his return would seem close to impossible. Off the back of a drop-out, the Bulldogs threaded a neat grubber behind the posts, and a small error at the back was all Adam Elliott needed to jump on the board and extend the Bulldogs’ lead to 10-0. The Bears responded shortly after a counter-attack raid, as prolific try-scorer and Josh Mansour look-a-like Abbas Miski replicated the Origin winger’s finishing ability, with a beautiful dive to touchdown in the right corner. The Bears have had their fair share of close encounters this year, and despite trailing by six, when they received a penalty in front of the posts; they took the two points on offer. Call it determined defence or a complete brain-snap, but the Bulldogs were penalised off the kick-off for an obvious shoulder charge, which gifted the Bears some valuable metres. A mistake gave possession away, but the Bears continued to show desperation in a bid to keep their season alive. In the final minute of play, Brad Dietz put a smart grubber down the middle of the field, and a North Sydney chaser won the race and scored the try. North Sydney Oval erupted at the thought the scores were locked up at 10-all, but the chaser was ruled offside. It was a dramatic ending to an absolute thriller, but the Bulldogs held on for a gutsy win to secure their spot in the finals.
