LOSS 18-34
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have been overcome 34-18 by a dominant Wests Tigers outfit in difficult conditions at ANZ Stadium tonight (Friday) to commence their 2017 season. Heading into the clash without Adam Reynolds and losing Greg Inglis and Hymel Hunt during the match, South Sydney struggled to fire against a dominant Tigers outfit that controlled the vast majority of the match. The Rabbitohs would be first on the scoreboard courtesy of Bryson Goodwin, as the veteran outside back provided the finishing touches to a slick shift to the left in the 5th minute. Assuming the kicking duties in place of the injured Adam Reynolds, Goodwin was unable to convert his try, leaving the margin at four points. After a strong start to the match, the home side were dealt a significant blow as skipper Greg Inglis struggled with what appeared to be a knee injury, causing the skipper to shift from fullback to the right wing as Alex Johnston moved to the back. Soon after, the Tigers would open their account as Ava Seumanufagai capitalised on an enterprising run from debutant Moses Suli to crash over next to the uprights. Mitchell Moses converted the try to give the Tigers the lead in the 20th minute. The Tigers would double their evening tally as James Tedesco showcased his ability to break tackles, ducking and weaving close to the line before lunging over for a four pointer. Moses added the extras once again to extend his sides lead to eight points. Once again, the Tigers would breach the home sides defence as Tedesco linked with Chris Lawrence who muscled his way over despite some desperate defence from Alex Johnson. Gifted with a simple kick, Moses had no issues providing the additional two points. Despite struggling with injury, Greg Inglis would score the final points of the first half as Cody Walker provided a pinpoint kick to the stalwart who had open pastures ahead of him. Goodwin couldn’t add the extras as the difference remained at ten points. On resumption, the Tigers took full advantage of some lacklustre defence from the Rabbitohs as they travelled the length of the field to score through Mitchell Moses in the 42nd minute. Continuing on from his flawless first half with the boot, Moses added another two points to the lead. The dominance of the visitors would be on display shortly after as Luke Brooks found the line off the back of some flamboyant football from his outside backs. Mitchell Moses was precise with the boot to extend the lead just shy of four converted tries. With their tails up, the Tigers continued to find themselves in strong attacking position and it didn’t take long for the away side to make the most of their opportunities as Moses Suli crossed for his first try at the top level. Moses would register his first miss of the evening as his sideline conversion was waved away. Having struggled for the duration of the second stanza, the Rabbitohs were finally back among the points in the 67th minute as Bryson Goodwin bagged his second of the night. Unlike his previous attempts, Goodwin was successful from the sideline with the boot leaving the score at 34-14. Goodwin’s night would not prove to be done there, as the elder statesman of the Rabbitohs claimed his third try with an acrobatic finish in the left-hand corner. This would prove to be the final points of the game as the conversion attempt was off target.
Scans have revealed that Rabbitohs captain Greg Inglis has injured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee which could see him sidelined for six months. Inglis’ injury occurred in the opening minutes of last night’s match against the Tigers however it was not diagnosed as an ACL injury until the scans were taken this morning. Rabbitohs General Manager of Football, Shane Richardson, said: “The injury occurred in the first instance in the match, not as a consequence of Greg playing on further. “Our medical staff further examined the injury at the half time break and they felt the knee was stable, and they along with the Head Coach and Greg himself agreed that he would go on and play in the second half. “I, along with the rest of our Club, have the greatest of confidence in our medical and coaching staff to make the best possible decisions about our players’ wellbeing.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs NYC team have gone down 30-28 in a thriller against the West Tigers at ANZ Stadium tonight (Friday). Two points would prove to be the margin in the clash which saw both side play some enterprising football throughout the affair. It would be the Tigers that would open the scoring in slippery conditions with Siaosi Nasilai barging over from close range. Hosea Leuea converted the front rower’s try to extend the lead for the away side. Despite both sides finding themselves in attacking positions on a number of occasions, neither would have any success during the middle period of the opening stanza due to issues created by the wet surface as well as ill-discipline. The Rabbitohs would find themselves on the scoreboard late in the half with Mawene Hiroti providing support up the middle and crossing under the uprights. Adam Doueihi secured the additional points to level the scores at six apiece. The Tigers would bounce back minutes later as Toa Mata’afa crossed out wide to regain the lead for his side. Once again, Hosea Leuea would add the extras for the visitors leaving the score at 12-6 heading into the break. On resumption, the Rabbitohs came out firing with Cruz Topai-Aveai finding the line from close range in the opening minutes of the half. Adam Doueihi would ensure the home side drew level once more, adding the additional two points. With momentum in their favour, the home side would continue to bombard the Tigers try line early in the half, however it would be the away side that would be the next to score as Toa Mata’afa claimed his second try of the evening. The extras were added by Leuea as the margin extended to six points. It wouldn’t be long before the Tigers extended their lead further as Daniel Peck found the line. No issues were encountered with the kick as a two converted tries lead was established. The Rabbitohs would keep themselves in the game as Henry-Siriah Fuimaono muscled his way over the line to reduce the deficit for his side. Adam Doueihi’s perfect record with the boot continued as the five-eighth slotted the conversion. As the Rabbitohs fought their way back into the game, some blistering speed from Liam Pakau would provide the Tigers with room to breathe late in the half. Leuea managed to add the extras and keep the margin at twelve points. With ten minutes remaining on the clock, Rangi-Paoa Boyce crashed over in the corner to keep the Red and Greens in the contest. The impressive evening of goal kicking would be extended as Doueihi converted. However, the Rabbitohs were not done yet, as Rangi-Paoa Boyce bagged himself a double in the dying seconds of the match to keep to game alive. With his side down by two points, Adam Doueihi was unable to kick the sideline conversion.

WIN 32-24
Late Changes - Siolo and Murphy are out. Burns starts on the wing, Crichton second row and Tasi on the bench.
The North Sydney Bears have held off a valiant Wentworthville Magpies side 32-24 in a fiery contest at Ringrose Park on Saturday afternoon. Halfback Eli Levido put in a classy performance, having a hand in a host of the Bears tries, with centre Robert Jennings bagging two of his own and putting in a great individual performance. Cheyne Whitelaw provided strong impact off the bench with a try right on full-time, while Magpies players Honeti Tuha and Cameron King were also strong in a losing side. There was some physical defence from both sides in the early exchanges, but it only took five minutes for the Bears to strike with Braidon Burns scoring after a brilliant break from Robert Jennings. It didn’t take long for the Magpies to return serve, after back-to-to-back penalties gave them great field position and allowed for Telepi Taningoa to barge his way over to score. Jamal Fogarty converted from the sideline and it was 6-all after 10 minutes. It was a brutal opening 15 minutes of the game as late inclusion Angus Chritchon showed his worth in defence, but the Bears couldn’t seem to complete their sets with some early handling errors. The Bears were on the back foot after an array of costly mistakes, and David Gover reaped the rewards as he broke through some flimsy defence to score right underneath the posts. An amount of pressure was heaping on the Bears after they conceded their second try, and were lucky not to let in a third after a costly error from the Magpies on their line. A classy backline movement at the other end of the field saw Robert Jennings score in the left-hand corner, with Eli Levido unable to convert and the Bears trailing by two points just before the half hour mark. Robert Jennings continued to threaten the Magpies defensive line with his blistering speed, with a short side play giving him enough space to offload to Burns who crossed for his second of the day. The Bears had a golden opportunity to score again late in the first half, however some committed goal-line defence from the Magpies was enough to hold on. The brutal opening half came to an end soon after, with the Bears holding on to a slight 16-12 advantage. The start to the second half was fiercely fought as both teams looked to stamp their authority in a feisty contest, but it was the Bears who broke through with Cameron Murray bustling off a defender to score his team's fourth of the afternoon. A schoolboy error from the Magpies gifted North Sydney the perfect opportunity to take a further stranglehold in the contest, and It wasn’t long before Jennings pounced on a perfectly weighted grubber from halfback Eli Levido, which saw the score quickly extended to two converted tries. Moments later, a brilliant offload from Cameron Murray allowed Burns to streak away to an eventual one-on-one with Honeti Tuha, with the Magpies fullback doing well to hold him out. Tuha gave away a penalty for having a hand in the ruck, which saw Levido take full advatange and add another two points the scoreline. The score as set at 26-12 with just over a quarter of an hour to go. The Magpies were throwing everything at the Bears with some threatening raids on the opposition goal line, but the Bears held their own with some gutsy goal line defence. Despite their efforts, five consecutive sets were enough to break the Bears brick-wall defence, with Cameron King scoring to the left of the uprights with just under 10 minutes to play. The Magpies continued to show their resilience in the closing stages of the game, with Honeti Tuha breaking away and eventually offloading to Bureta Faraimo to score in the left-hand corner. Fogarty brilliantly converted and the score was 26-24 with just two minutes to play. Some quick thinking from Cheyne Whitelaw saw him barge over the line right on full-time, with the Bears holding out a courageous Magpies outfit 32-24.
