LOSS 6-20
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have been defeated 20-6 by the Sydney Roosters at ANZ Stadium tonight (Thursday). Although the away side claimed what appeared to be a comfortable victory on paper, it was far from being a one-sided affair as the Rabbitohs showed plenty of promise at stages throughout the match against their table topping opponents. Despite the slippery conditions, there were positive signs early on in attack for the home side with Cody Walker effortlessly breaking through the Roosters defence in the opening minutes of the clash. However, it would be the Roosters that would post the first points of the evening courtesy of a slick backline shift finished off by Latrell Mitchell in the 6th minute. The extras were provided by Michael Gordon, leaving the tri colours with a six point lead. The Roosters would be the next to feature on the scoreboard as Joseph Manu linked up with Michael Gordon who pierced the South Sydney defensive line before crawling over to score. Similarly to his first attempt, the visiting custodian was precise with the boot, converting his own try from out wide. Trailing by twelve points, the Rabbitohs started to find their rhythm in attack, featuring deep within enemy territory and applying pressure to the Rooster defence. Handling errors and poor execution proved costly for the Red and Greens though, as they were unable to capitalise on their field position in the middle period of the opening stanza. Late in the half, the away side would break the point scoring drought – which saw neither side contribute to the score for a 25 minute period – after Michael Gordon was gifted a penalty goal off the back of a slow release. These would prove to be the final points of the half as the sides went into the sheds with the Roosters leading by 14 points to nil. On resumption, the players were welcomed back to the field by consistent rain, although this didn’t appear to have an effect on either team as they continued to shift the ball around in search of points. This willingness to attack seemed to favour the home side who had four back to back sets from close range. The sustained pressure saw the tricolours defence give way for the first time in the match as Sitiveni Moceidreke strolled over for a four pointer on debut for the Red and Green. Adam Reynolds conversion from the sideline was his 400th goal at the top level and saw his side reduce the buffer to eight points. Despite struggling to press forward early in the second period, the Roosters soon found themselves on the front foot as they attacked South Sydney’s right edge defence. After falling short on his first attempt in the corner, Daniel Tupou would not be denied the second time around, scoring in the 57 minute. Gordon’s perfect night with the boot continued to set up a 20-6 score line in favour of the visitors. Wet conditions began to hamper to efforts of both sides late in the half as points proved hard to come by. The dominant start from the Roosters would prove to be enough as they would go on to claim a 14 point win.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 4
v Sydney Roosters, 5:55pm
WIN 40-8
Late Changes - Ili was trimmed 24 hours before the match. Shaich-Wise, Boyce and Sheppard are out. Cordtz started full back, O'Connor on the wing, Topai-Aveai prop, T.Butler second row, Kolomatangi and Saunders on the bench.
After displaying brilliant attacking football in trying conditions, the South Sydney Rabbitohs NYC side has claimed their first victory of the season with a 40-8 win over the Sydney Roosters at ANZ Stadium. Commencing the game in wet conditions, the away side would be the first to score as Kiah Cooper breached the Rabbitohs defence from close range. Jesse Marschke’s first conversion attempt of the evening was waved away leaving his sides lead at four points. The Rooster’s brilliant start to the clash would continue as a bust down the left flank resulted in a Victor Radley try minutes after the initial blow. The margin would remain at two unconverted tries as Marschke’s kick was waved away once again. With a cross-field kick failing to be diffused by the Roosters, South Sydney would score their opening try as Beau Cordtz made the most of a favourable bounce. The deficit would be reduced to two as Adam Doueihi provided the extras from in front. Similarly to their opponents, the Red and Greens would post back to back tries as Dylan O’Connor finished off a slick backline play to give his side the lead. Unlike his maiden attempt, Doueihi was able to add to the tally. After making his debut last week against the Newcastle Knights, new recruit Tyrone Taukamo continued the strong attacking display to cross out wide. A brilliant sideline conversion from Doueihi left the score line at 16-8, where it would sit for the remainder of the half. On resumption, the home side picked up where they left off as Harry Leddy drifted across field before muscling his way over. The conversion was unsuccessful as the Rabbitohs found themselves with a lead of two converted tries. Some undisciplined play from the visitors would see them reduced to twelve men, whilst also providing their opposition with two points through a penalty goal. The points would continue to flow for the young Rabbitohs after Mawene Hiroti found the line on the left edge. Doueihi’s solid night with the boot continued as the five-eighth secure the additional two points. It wouldn’t take long for the next points to be posted with Dylan O’Connor exploiting the Roosters left side defence to score his second of the night. The gap between the uprights was once again pierced with the score blowing out to 34-8. With the Rabbitohs finding their rhythm in attack, Blake Manowski found himself amongst the action with the backrower adding another four pointer for his side. Doueihi had no issues with the kick to propel his side to the forty point mark and cap off an emphatic victory for his side.

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership Round 4
v Mt Pritchard, Aubrey Keech Reserve, Sat Mar 25 3:00pm
WIN 12-4
Late Changes - Mociedreke, Jamel Hunt are out. Miski starts wing, Murray second row, Tasi on the bench.
North Sydney have extended their undefeated run in 2017 to four matches, after accounting for fellow competition front-runners by 12-4 in a fiery clash at Aubrey Keech Reserve. While Mounties were aided by the late addition of former Queensland State of Origin representative, Dave Taylor, it would be the Bears who would fire, bringing an end to the home side’s impressive start to 2017. The two tries to one effort from Norths would not be without controversy however, with tempers flaring in the dying moments of the clash — Bears hooker, Brad Deitz being sin-binned for a professional foul with four minutes in the match remaining, leaving the eventual victors a man down to finish the game. Ill-discipline would would feature throughout the match, and the opening exchanges were no exception. Inside the first four minutes Mounties got multiple early scoring opportunities inside the Bears 20 metre line, but despite the momentum, Norths were able to repel the attacking raids with strong defence. The Bears would get their own string of opportunities though when halfback, Eli Levido, forced a repeat-set via a well-weighted grubber-kick, setting up a number of scoring opportunities for his side that would apply pressure to the home team. With 15 minutes in the half gone, Mounties kicked a crucial forty-twenty through Jordan Turner that would see the home-side park themselves firmly inside the Bears side of half-way. Two tackles later, Dominic Reardon would be the beneficiary when he steamed onto a long Turner cut-out pass to score in the corner, to make the score 4-0. Norths got themselves on the board at the 22 minute mark after a penalty to the visitors inside the 10 metres eventually resulted in Levido throwing a long ball out to winger, Dane Nielsen, who touched down in the corner to equalise. Levido’s conversion attempt was waved away, leaving the score at four apiece. Mounties looked to hit-back moments later when Taylor hit a short-ball at speed close to the line, but while the ‘Coal Train’ looked certain to score, poor handling would rob him of a four-pointer mere inches from the line. With 13 minutes left in the first half, Levido kicked a booming forty-twenty that would go out just metres from the try-line to again place the North-siders in prime attacking position. But yet another penalty would halt the momentum of the match, prompting referee Chris Trenemen to warn both sides. Norths would opt to take the shot at goal, with Levido booting his side ahead to make the score 6-4 going into the sheds. On the resumption, Norths applied the blow-torch to the Mounties defence, with wave after wave of attack raining down on the home-side’s own line. After multiple patient attempts, Norths would finally break through when a slick back-line movement resulted in Ed Murphy crossing out wide. Levido’s conversion attempt was again waved away, leaving the Bears in control at 10-4. With Norths again looking dangerous on the Mounties line, Norths were awarded a penalty after Cheyne Whitelaw was hit high by Makahesi Makatoa. Norths seized the chance to boot themselves two points further ahead, with Levido slotting the goal from right in front to make it 12-4 with 20 minutes remaining. The Bears continued to gather momentum by forcing a number of morale-boosting errors late in the match, much to the appreciation of the vocal Bears faithful who made the trip to Aubrey Keech for the Round 4 clash. With seven minutes remaining, Bears hooker, Deitz was collected by a swinging arm, prompting a penalty that would see Norths have another roll of the dice close to the home-side’s line that would again prove fruitless. Mounties would dominate the closing stages of the match following the sin-binning of Deitz, but it would be the North Sydney side that would take home the competition points.
