WIN 21-20

The South Sydney Rabbitohs claimed a well-deserved victory in their round six clash defeating the Penrith Panthers 21-20 in front of a crowd of 15,535 at Pepper Stadium tonight (Friday). The Rabbitohs found a nice rhythm early and picked up the pace of the game from previous weeks. The Panthers were the first to make a mistake when a poor pass from Michael Oldfield left the ball open for Siosifa Talakai to jump on for possession. A slow peel by the Panthers Dylan Edwards followed and saw Adam Reynolds line up for a penalty shot. His successful conversion brought the Rabbitohs into an early two point to zero lead. It didn’t take long for the red and green jersey to reach the try line after a huge fend from Angus Crichton saw him offload the ball to Sam Burgess. The captain led his team by powering over the line for the nights’ first four-pointer. Reynolds slotted the conversion right through the uprights and the Rabbitohs led eight points to zero within the first 10 minutes. The Panthers were the next to score when an offload in the left corner saw Dallin Watene-Zelezniak make his way over the try line. Nathan Cleary’s successful conversion saw the Panthers close in on the Rabbitohs eight to six point lead. Robert Jennings stepped his way over the Penrith’s defence and onto the try line but a decision by the bunker decided the ball was held up and a no try call resulted in a last tackle 10 metres out. The Panthers took off making 70 metres and putting pressure back on the Rabbitohs defence. The Panthers found a crack and Corey Hawawira-Naera slotted through to take the Panthers into the lead for the first time in the match. Cleary added two more and the Panthers led 12 points to eight. The Rabbitohs again faltered giving away a penalty in front of the uprights with Cleary clearing the crossbar. The Panthers extended their lead 14 points to eight. With minutes counting down towards half time the Rabbitohs attack picked up the pace and a dummy pass from Cody Walker saw the opposition open up a gap. Walker bolted towards the line and although reference to the bunker, the referee confirmed the Rabbitohs second try for the evening. Reynolds levelled the score board by a successful conversion from far out left and the Rabbitohs went into the sheds level with the Panthers 14 points each. The second half again started in the Rabbitohs favour adding another couple of points to the board through a quick backline manoeuvre and partnership by Walker and Reynolds. Walker showed his side stepping skills and stepped his way around three defenders before slotting the ball into the path of Reynolds who flew over the line for his first try of the season. Reynolds sealed his four-pointer with a successful shot at goal keeping his kicking conversion rate at 100% and bringing the Rabbitohs back into the lead 20 points to 14. The Rabbitohs momentum built and they continued to apply pressure on the Panthers defence but the home side fought back moving the play into Rabbitohs dangerous territory. Despite their efforts the Panthers couldn’t capitalise on their chances. However the Panthers would add another four-pointer through Michael Oldfield with four minutes remaining on the clock leaving the Cleary to level the points at 20-all. A minute remained on the clock but it would be the Rabbitohs who would add the final point for the night through a successful field goal attempt by Reynolds.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 6

v Penrith, 5:35pm

LOSS 24-28

Late Changes - Shiach-wise was trimmed 24 hours before the match. Pheonix Hunt, Shepherd and Hippi were out. Topai-Aveai started prop, Tarquinn Butler second row, Saunders and Koloamatangi on the bench.

A spirited Rabbitohs U/20s outfit would lose out to the first-placed Penrith Panthers at Pepper Stadium tonight by four points after leading the entire game. The Penrith Panthers got things underway at their home ground to kick off Round six of the 2017 NYC tournament. Blake Manowski lined up as hooker for the Rabbitohs squad after the late withdrawal of Phoenix Hunt. The opening sets would see each side getting the feel of their opposition until the Rabbitohs grabbed the first good chance of the match after forcing the repeat set in the 5th minute. Ill-discipline from the Panthers resulted in a penalty that created enough pressure for the Rabbitohs to snatch the early lead with Gabe Hamlin crashing over to score in the 8th minute. Doueihi would convert to give the Rabbitohs a 6-0 lead. Forcing another repeat set, the Rabbitohs would strike again soon when Beau Cordtz found a gap in the Panthers line after a quick shift to the right edge in the 10th minute. Doueihi converted again to double the lead. Rabbitohs 12 – 0 Panthers. The Panthers would have their turn in the 16th minute to attack but a good Rabbitohs scramble would keep out some strong runs. The Rabbitohs would make their way out of danger after catching the Panthers offside. The Rabbitohs would continue their attacking show with Doueihi and Cordtz combining in the 17th minute to score off a brilliant Doueihi grubber. The halfback converted to extend the Rabbitohs lead to 18-0. The Panthers would find their groove after conceding three early tries to the Rabbitohs and would almost register points after crossing through Daniel Brown in the 34th minute. However, the Penrith winger would be disallowed the try through obstruction. Another chance would be missed in the 35th minute as a Panthers player dropped the ball dead after charging the line from close range. The young Rabbitohs would head into the sheds at half time with an 18 point lead. The Panthers would strike first in the second half through Reed Izzard who punched through the Rabbitohs line from close range. Dean Blore would convert and the Panthers would claw it back to 18-6 after 45 minutes. The Rabbitohs would re-group and strike back in the 50th minute through a dummy half run by Blake Manowski. Doueihi continued his perfect night on the boot and the Rabbitohs restored their 18-point buffer. Souths 24 – 6 Panthers. The second half would prove a tit-for-tat affair with the Panthers hitting back through Stefano Hala for the third try of the second half. Blore would slot his second conversion of the night and the score would close to 24-12 after 60 minutes. The new found momentum for the Panthers would drive them up field to register another try after a cross-field kick was re-gathered and offloaded to Richie Munchow to score in the 63rd minute. Blore would miss this conversion. Souths 24 – 16 Panthers. Souths would step it up a gear and arrest the momentum but the lion’s share of the possession would remain with the Panthers as they chased the Rabbitohs lead. However, the Panthers would close the gap again in the 75th minute through a show-and-go by five-eighth Dean Blore who would convert his own effort. The Panthers would sit just two points shy of the Rabbitohs at 24-22. The game would come down to the last 30 seconds when the Panthers would snatch the win through fullback Caleb Aekins – the recipient of a quick, flat cut-out ball. The first-placed Panthers would claim victory on home soil over the 14th-placed Rabbitohs… just.

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership Round 6

v Canterbury, Belmore Sports Ground, Sat Apr 8 3:00pm

WIN 8-6

Late Changes - Siolo is out. Cherrington starts prop, Rudolf from the bench

Defence has won the North Sydney Bears their fifth game of the season this afternoon, grinding out an 8-6 victory over the Canterbury Bulldogs at Belmore Sports Ground. If there was a game where both sides deserved competition points, this was it, as absolutely everything each player had was left on the field, with individuals dropping to the ground after the full-time buzzer in exhaustion. Both sides were defensively on-song having only conceded one try each, but it was the Bears’ goal-line defence that stood out, consistently defusing the Bulldogs attack no matter how much was thrown in their face for the entire contest. The first major defensive play came from Tyrell Fuimaono, who saved a try when Lachlan Lewis through a wonderful ball for Reimis Smith with nobody in front of him, but the former Eel bundled him into touch. Desperate Bulldogs scrambling defence prevented the Bears opening chance when Tautalatasi Tasi broke the line but couldn’t find support, before Eli Levido’s grubber a few tackles later went straight into touch. Fuimaono threatened to post first points when he made a break from inside his own half, but a ‘once in a lifetime’ error came at the wrong time when he knocked the ball on with no defenders on him. With less than three minutes remaining in the half, the Bulldogs opened the scoring when Francis Tualau put Renouf To’omaga through a hole, who beat Latrell Robinson at fullback to score adjacent to the posts. Meanwhile, Cheyne Whitelaw had to be taken off the field during the conversion for a head injury assessment, while Lachlan Lewis was taken off at the back-end of the half with a suspected rib injury. The second half began with North Sydney kicking out on the full but their defence held strong, before Jeremiah Leasi pulled off a brilliant try-saving tackle to prevent the Bears posting their first points. After defending another two sets on their line, North Sydney finally got on the scoreboard thanks to an exciting passage of play that saw Robinson cut through the defence and making a long-range run before passing inside to Levido who locked up the scores at 6-all. Brad Deitz attempted to burrow his way over from dummy half, but the Bulldogs markers gave a penalty away, and the Bears took the gift two points on offer to take the lead for the first time. A great run by Zac Woolford gave the Bulldogs a chance to attack at the death, but the Bears were once again able to defuse the situation. The Bulldogs had to go 90 metres in the final minute of play and they nearly pulled off a miracle, but a fantastic effort from the skipper, Ed Murphy, prevented any chance of a late defeat, when he jumped on a loose ball that prevented Tyrone Phillips getting a sniff, before Robinson booted the ball into Edison Street to complete the gutsy win.

Whitelaw has been charged with a Grade 2 Dangerous Contact Head/Neck from a tackle in the 37th minute and will miss one match.
