LOSS 8-46

The South Sydney Rabbitohs went down to the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles 8 points to 46 in their second encounter and round nine match at Allianz Stadium tonight (Friday) in front of a crowd of 10,594. Adam Reynolds returned to the field after missing last week’s match due to a hip injury. His return saw Cody Walker move back into five-eight and Sutton return to the second row. Kyle Turner moved back to his position in prop while the interchange remained the same. The Rabbitohs got themselves an early lead when a knock on by Manly in the 4th minute of the game saw the Rabbitohs take a penalty kick just under 30 metres out in front of goals. Reynolds kicked the ball straight through the posts and the Rabbitohs had an early two point lead. Rabbitohs had plenty of momentum in the opening ten minutes completing five out of six sets and obtaining 57% of possession. But Manly were the next to score finding rhythm and the line through Brenton Lawrence when he slipped through the home side defence and flew over to give his side the lead. Centre Dylan Walker made the try sweeter with a successful conversion and the Rabbitohs fell behind two points to six. The next ten minutes turned against the Rabbitohs and Manly made it to the line again with a try to Curtis Sironen. Dylan Walker added the extras and the Rabbitohs fell further behind two points to 12. Manly extended their lead with Brian Kelly taking the path up the left side of the field and passing it off to Jorge Taufua to score. Dylan Walker missed his first conversion for the night but his side wouldn’t leave the points behind for long. With 30 minutes of the game completed, Manly added another four-pointer through Akuila Uate on the right side of the field extending their lead 20 points to two. Dylan Walker began to read our defence and for a second time in the match brought in our winger and fullback to find the space for Uate to go over for his first-half double. An unsuccessful conversion wouldn’t stop Manly from adding more points through a sixth try for the night. Dylan Walker converted and the Rabbitohs went into the sheds at half-time trailing two points to 30. Michael Maguire’s half-time talk looked to boost the team with Robert Jennings getting close to the try line but missed the opportunity with a knock on. The frustration loomed in the home side but they weren’t giving up easily, earning metres and completing sets. Souths got close to the line once again but Manly caught an attempted offload soaring the interception back down the field. Gaining back the possession, the Rabbitohs fired up and their determination paid off when Hymel Hunt got the ball down on the far right side of the field earning the side’s first try. Reynolds right boot was on his side and he successfully kicked the conversion adding his 901st NRL point. The Rabbitohs were behind eight points to 30. But Manly wouldn’t let the Rabbitohs catch up that easily and Uate added his third try for the night taking his side to 34 points. He would find the right hand corner again and add his fourth try and Manly’s 38th point with 11 minutes left on the clock. Jackson Hastings took over kicking duties and added the extras. The Rabbitohs kept up their persistence to add more points but couldn’t catch the Sea Eagles who added their ninth and final try for the night. Hastings conversion was successful sealing Manly with a 46 to eight point win. The round acknowledged the Men of League Foundation with past players walking a pre-match lap of honour. The Foundation supports players, coaches, referees, administrators, volunteers and committees from all levels of the game through their benevolence and wellbeing program.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 9

v Manly-Warringah, 3:45pm

LOSS 20-38

Late Changes - no-one was trimmed 24 hours before the match. Rodwell, Ta'avala and Mougious were out. O'Connor sarts fullback, Sheppard on the left wing, Johnstone prop, Hippi second row and Cordtz on the bench.

An understrength Rabbitohs U/20s squad would lose out to the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles in their Round nine clash at Allianz Stadium, going down 38-20. Despite coming in as underdogs, the young Rabbitohs took an early lead through 18-year old winger Tyrone Taukamo who scored in the right corner in the third minute. Hawkins would shoot wide on his conversion attempt. Rabbitohs 4 – 0 Sea Eagles. The Rabbitohs continued their attacking pressure but an ineffective grubber kick found the arms of Manly five-eighth Tom Wright who ran the length of the field to score in the left corner. The conversion attempt by Bilal Maarbani was waved away and the scores were locked at 4-4 after eight minutes. Rabbitohs would continue to pressure the Sea Eagles try line for consecutive sets – however they were unable to capitalise. It would prove costly for the young Rabbitohs as the Sea Eagles, aided by a penalty, managed to get out of their own half and score in the right corner through winger Alfred Smalley. The Sea Eagles conversion attempt would go wide and Manly would take the lead at 8-4 after 21 minutes. The Sea Eagles would take control of this game after absorbing the early traffic and score again through centre Brad Parker. Maarbani would convert this attempt, the Sea Eagles making it 14-4 after 26 minutes. Tom Wright would add to his tally in the 30th minute, running a good line to split the Rabbitohs defence and score on the right edge. Maarbani converted from a difficult angle to make the scores 18-4 in Manly’s favour. The Rabbitohs would claw their way back into the contest through Tyrone Taukamo in the 35th minute. The young winger was the recipient of a quick shift to the right and although bobbling the ball in his hands would ground well next to the post. The conversion attempt was waved away with the Rabbitohs now trailing by 10 points. Manly would retort just before the half after a beautiful cross field kick by Fainu which found the arms of winger Alfred Smalley to stroll over for his second of the match. The conversion attempt would go wide and Manly would go into the sheds with a 24-8 lead. The second half would start in the same fashion the first half ended; with a try to Manly. Alfred Smalley would score his hattrick try in the corner and the conversion would be waved away. Manly led 28-8 after 43 minutes. Jordan Mailata would bag his first try in the red and green in the 47th minute, crashing over under the posts and carrying several Manly defenders at the same time. Hawkins would covert this attempt and Souths would sit at 14 points to Manly’s 28. Bilal Maarbani would push Manly four points further into the lead, finding a lot of space on the left side of field to step his way past a Rabbitohs defender and carry the ball 20 metres to score. The conversion was unsuccessful by fullback Luke Polselli. Manly 32 -14 Souths after 58 minutes. Sam Johnston would add his name to the scoreboard in a similar vein to Mailata in the 63rd minute. Crashing under the posts he set up an easy conversion for Dean Hawkins whose kick would leave the score at 32-20. Josh Martin would join in the scoring for the Sea Eagles, the second-rower crashing over the line from close range. Maarbani converted and the Sea Eagles would lead 38-20 after 70 minutes.

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership Round 9

v Illawarra, Nowra Showground, Sat Apr 29 3:00pm

WIN 23-10

Late Changes - Cherrington and Greinke are out. Mauala starts prop, Rogers second row, Tasi and J.Hunt on the bench.

The North Sydney Bears snapped their two-game losing streak in the Intrust Super Premiership NSW when they defeated an error-riddled Illawarra 23-10 in their match at Nowra Showground this afternoon. The win keeps the Bears safely inside the top four for the moment as a four-point gap has now opened up to the rest of the the top eight as a result. Showing more purpose in attack than they have in recent weeks, the Bears opened the scoring in the 11th minute when a clever Eli Levido cross-kick evaded Illawarra fullback Matt Dufty – allowing former Queensland State of Origin winger Dane Nielsen to pounce for his first try. Illawarra had an early chance soon afterwards when centre Tyrell Fuimaono lost the ball at the end of a long right-side break, before Norths mounted extended pressure inside Illawarra’s defensive 20 metre area. This pressure paid dividends in the 27th minute when a right-side spread saw winger Braidon Burns finish the movement off to score in the corner to give the Bears an 8-0 lead. Illawarra then had their best passage of play in the 10 minutes either side of half-time. First, five-eighth Jai Field snaffled an intercept off a pass from opposite number Levido five minutes from half-time and dashed 55 metres to score. Shaun Nona converted to get Illawarra back to being only 8-6 down at the break. Then in the first set of six tackles to start the second half, a shift to the left from Nona saw winger Izaac Thompson in the clear to beat the poor cover defence and score in the corner and give the home side for the day a 10-8 lead. The first of two critical Illawarra errors followed when winger Patrick Herbert dropped the ball in goal with a try on in the 46th minute. The resultant seven tackle set saw Norths work their way inside Illawarra’s defensive 20-metre zone for interchange forward Tautalatasi Tasi to power over from dummy-half and score to put the Bears back in front at 12-10. The Bears converted another repeat set deep in attack 11 minutes later when a sweeping backline movement through the hands saw Nielsen finish clinically in the corner for his second try. Poor goal-kicking from Levido – who finished with no goals from four attempts – kept the Norths lead to only 16-10. The match became a series of errors, dropped balls and turnovers in the middle of the second half – before the other critical Illawarra error took place in the 66th minute. A lovely Nona short ball put Josh Kerr into a yawning gap that saw the big prop make his way in goal – only to drop the ball as he was grounding it to score what would have been the match-levelling try. Kerr then threw a pass intercepted by Fuimaono on Illawarra’s next attack to open the door for the Bears to put the game away. Norths took their opportunity with seven minutes left when lock Cheyne Whitelaw strolled through token goal-line defence to score the match winning try under the posts. Interchange back Adam Doueihi landed the conversion to extend the Bears lead to 22-10. Norths half Luke Kelly then slotted a neat 20-metre field goal with 90 seconds left to make sure of the two competition points.
