LOSS 16-22
The South Sydney Rabbitohs went down 16-22 against the Parramatta Eels in front of a crowd of 14,218 in their Round 12 match tonight (Friday) at ANZ Stadium. The two teams stood out clearly on the field with the Rabbitohs sporting their 2017 New Edition Superman Jersey. The exclusion of Bryson Goodwin to a knee injury saw Tyrell Fuimaono start in the centre position alongside Alex Johnston on the left wing. The Burgess twins were back together in the middle with George Burgess returning from suspension. The Eels opened up the scoring in the sixth minute, finding a gap in the Rabbitohs defence. Despite a chase from Cody Walker, Tepai Moeroa flew over the line for the evening’s first try. The conversion attempt by Clinton Gutherson swayed to the left but the Eels came out in front four points to nil. The Eels attack was strong, with the visiting side holding on to 67% possession in the opening 15 minutes. They would go over for a second try in the 19th minute when a well-weighted Gutherson grubber forced a handling error in goal opening the ball up to be scored by Beau Scott. A successful conversion saw the Eels extend their lead 10 points to nil. The Eels added an extra two points shortly after with the Rabbitohs penalised in front of goal for being off-side and giving away a penalty goal. With the first half ticking away, the Eels got themselves another try when a quick play the ball saw Gutherson make a line break and pass it off to Semi Radradra who would power down the field to grab the Eels third four-pointer. The conversion added to the Eels lead totalling 18 points while the Rabbitohs ran into the sheds scoreless at half time. The Rabbitohs came back onto the field for the second half and had some catching up to do. The Eels began to show some weakness, giving away three penalties in the opening minutes. The drive in the Rabbitohs ramped up and Hymel Hunt made a successful strip in a one-on-one tackle with Radradra near our line. Angus Crichton saw the loose ball and picked it up to sprint an impressive 92m and touch the ball down for the Rabbitohs first try. Adam Reynolds nailed the conversion and the Rabbitohs were on the board. The hope was still there for the home side with 30 minutes remaining but they still had some catching up to do falling behind six points to 18. The Eels wouldn’t make it easy though adding another four pointer through winger Josh Hoffman. The try extended their lead 22 points to six while the conversion was unsuccessful. The Rabbitohs however responded with Johnston flying down the left side and scoring in the corner. Reynolds sealed the achievement with a successful conversion and the Rabbitohs narrowed in 12 points to 22. Johnston would get his way over the line for a second time with seconds remaining on the clock.
In the first time in Rabbitohs first grade history, the Rabbitohs declined the shot at goal with four seconds left on the clock. Under the current NRL rules within the last 5 minutes timeoff is called after the goal is kicked and before kickoff. If Souths had kicked the goal it would have taken longer than 4 seconds. So in a attempt to send the game into golden point they declined to kick at goal. But in a final desperate attempt was not to be this time with time getting the best of the home side fighting their way for more points but they couldn't catch the Eels and went down 16 points to 22.John Sutton today played his 298th senior premiership match for South Sydney passing Craig Coleman's senior premiership tally of 297 to become the Souths Sydney's all grade(FG/RG/3G) most capped premiership player. Well done to Super Johnny Sutton.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 12
v Parramatta, 5:20pm
WIN 28-26
Late Changes - Rodwell was trimmed 24 hours before the match. H.Fuimaono, P.Hunt and Sheppard were out. Johnstone started prop.
The young Rabbitohs have claimed a massive victory over the Parramatta Eels at ANZ Stadium tonight, beating the visiting team 28-26 in a back and forth affair. Despite a brilliant performance against the Storm at Redfern Oval last weekend, the young Rabbitohs took the field as firm underdogs against a young Eels team in hot form. Five-eighth Adam Doueihi returned to the Rabbitohs under 20s squad after a stint with the North Sydney Bears to help the Rabbitohs face off with the 4th placed Eels. The Rabbitohs would start the contest strongly, placing the Eels under pressure from the kick-off and holding them there until the 9th minute when Adam Doueihi would take a chance to run the ball and slip through the Eels defence to score. He would convert his own effort to give the Rabbitohs a 6-0 lead. The Eels would come close to returning the favour in the 14th minute after a Rabbitohs handling error in their own half would place the home side under plenty of pressure. A solid defensive effort helped the Rabbitohs maintain their lead and box out the Eels left edge – forcing centre Noel Aukafolau to handover the ball after being caught out on the last tackle. Another chance would fall to the Eels in the 20th minute after a stripping penalty on the Rabbitohs 40m line would invite the visiting team deep into Souths territory. This time they’d make it count with Reed Mahoney throwing a quick inside ball to oncoming prop Sean Keppie to crash over under the posts. Fullback Anthony Layoun would add the extras and parity would be restored at 6-all in the NYC clash. A high shot on Gabe Hamlin in the 26th minute would start the movements for the Rabbitohs next points, the young Rabbitohs taking the tap and marching deep into Eels territory in one set. Adam Doueihi’s attacking grubber would graze the post and prove too hard to clean up for the Eels with Theo Hippi pouncing on the loose ball to score. Doueihi converted and the Rabbitohs reclaimed the lead at 12-6. The contest would stay neck and neck; Parramatta would attack the Rabbitohs right side defence and find a gap with Filia Utoikamanu crashing over to score. Layoun converted a difficult kick from the touchline to level it at 12-all after 36 minutes. The Parramatta Eels would come out strongly in the second half, piling the pressure on the Rabbitohs before scoring a freakish try through interchange player Beni Valu. Reed Mahoney would put in a low hard kick across the face of the tryline, the ball travelled 3 metres into the arms of Valu to crash over the tryline. It was excellent and frankly unnecessary. Eels led 16-12. Not to be outdone, a piece of individual brilliance by Beau Cordtz would put the Rabbitohs back in the driver seat - the fullback stepping his way through five Eels defenders and travelling 30 metres to score near the posts. Adam Doueihi converted and the Rabbitohs would reclaim the lead 18-16 after 50 minutes. Beau Cordtz would double his contribution only 5 minutes later, creating numbers on the left edge and finding his way over the tryline. Adam Doueihi couldn’t convert this one from out wide and the Rabbitohs would open a six-point lead on the Eels. With the momentum swing firmly in the young Rabbitohs favour, halfback Dean Hawkins would cross again for the Rabbitohs only two minutes afterwards. Hawkins would be in the right place at the right time as a Souths attacking grubber would bounce back off the post and into his arms to score easily under the posts. Doueihi converted and the Rabbitohs took a strong 28-16 lead into the final quarter. The Parramatta Eels would mount their comeback in the 68th minute, Reed Mahoney darting from dummy half to cross under the posts. Mitch Butfield took the conversion attempt and slotted it through the uprights. Eels only six points behind at 28-22. With 9 minutes left on the clock the Parramatta Eels would score again in the corner through Dean Matterson but miss the chance to equal the scores at Mitch Butfield failed to convert his kick from the touchlines. The pressure was too real at this point. The Eels continued their onslaught but brave defending from the Rabbitohs managed to hold them out until the final whistle. Souths left the field with two points thanks to a margin of… two points!

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership Round 12
v Warriors, Mt Smart Stadium, Sat May 27 5:15pm NZT
LOSS 10-18
Late Changes - Nielsen, Gosiewski, Grenike, Dokonivalu were out. Robinson started fullback, Schaumkel left wing, Rogers right centre Williams prop, Tyrrell(18) and Siolo(21) second row and O'Donnell(20) and Freebairn(22) on the bench.
The Warriors have bounced back from a scrappy Round 11 win with a good victory in Round 12, defeating the North Sydney Bears 18-10 at Mt Smart Stadium. Having convincingly defeated the Bears on their turf four weeks ago, the Warriors were impressive yet again - but had to contend with a fast finish from their opposition in Auckland. Halfback and captain Mason Lino was in form as per usual, while Toafofoa Sipley came up with two vital runs for the Warriors. While all 17 of the Bears were willing in attack and defence, a number of errors at key moments made life difficult for Ben Gardiner's men. Rocked by the immediate departure of Tui Lolohea, who signed with the Wests Tigers in the lead-up, the Warriors shifted usual no.9 Sam Cook to fullback and the talented Jazz Tevaga filled the hooking role. The Bears featured a new-look forward pack with Clayton Williams, David Tyrell and Patrice Siolo all coming into the starting side. A late hit on Eli Levido gifted the North Sydney side an attacking set early, but they failed to come up with points from their first opportunity - before helping the Warriors back upfield due to a penalty. From there, the second-placed hosts made no mistake as Mason Lino put in a grubber for Junior Pauga, who outpaced Latrell Schaumkel to score the opening try. Lino then nailed the conversion and it was 6-0 in favour of the hosts. Tevaga looked to dive from dummy-half soon after to compound the Bears' woes, but a Charlie Gubb penalty denied the hooker the four points. It would be another 15 minutes until more points came, thanks to a destructive running from Toafofoa Sipley. The interchange forward took the ball with plenty to do but carried four Bears defenders to score a fantastic try, with another successful conversion giving the side a 12-0 advantage. The Warriors kept coming and while they were unable to extend their lead further in the first half, they were on top in what was a defensively strong game of Rugby League. Enjoying a 60-40 share of possession, completing at 80 per cent and missing just five tackles in the first period, the New Zealand team was looking very impressive heading into the sheds. Early in the second half, it was once again a hard run from Sipley which would help the Warriors back onto the scoreboard. Following his hit-up, Ofahiki Ogden rammed into the defensive line and managed to score the Warriors' third of the day next to the posts; an easy conversion attempt was then successful from Lino as they got out to an 18-0 lead. There appeared to be a spring in the step of the Bears outfit and while handling errors at key moments continued to haunt them, eventually they would get on the board via Abbas Miski. When Luke Kelly set up a nice play down the right-hand side, Miski came up on the inside of Thomas Freebairn to score, with the conversion taking scores to 18-6 with 15 minutes remaining. The Bears maintained hope of a comeback and were certainly on top in the late stages - an opportunity they made the most of via Chad O'Donnell. The interchange forward burst through the Warriors' line to score in the North-Eastern corner, giving North Sydney a fighting chance of getting within a converted try of their opposition. Levido's conversion attempt, however, sailed well wide of the posts and scores remained 18-10. At the conclusion of an impressive fightback, the Warriors still emerged victorious 18-10 and thanks to a narrow Wyong Roos victory across the Tasman, remain in second position on the Intrust Super Premiership NSW ladder.
