WIN 42-14
Alex Johnston etched his name into South Sydney folklore tonight when he equalled the Club’s try scoring record for one match, scoring five tries in the Rabbitohs’ 42-14 victory over the Penrith Panthers at ANZ Stadium today (Sunday). 14,103 Members and fans watched Johnston put his name in lights next to Club champions such as Harold Horder, Alan Quinlivan, Don Manson, Johnny Graves, Ian Moir, Eric Sladden and modern day hero Nathan Merritt with his five-try effort today in round 17. It was Adam Reynolds who controlled the game for the Rabbitohs as the forwards laid the platform for the Rabbitohs backs to tear apart the Panthers’ defence. The Rabbitohs kicked off and met the Panthers with some solid defence in the opening set but it was the mountain men who would get the upper hand on the scoreboard early in the piece. The Panthers were the first to post points from an eighth minute penalty goal to Nathan Cleary, followed three minutes later when Matt Moylan scored from a dubious long ball from Dallin Watene-Zelezniak. Cleary converted to take the Panthers’ lead out to eight points. A fracas broke out in the 16th minute of play which saw South Sydney captain Sam Burgess and Penrith winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak both sent to the sin bin for slapping. The Rabbitohs struck almost immediately when an errant Moylan pass was scooped up by Alex Johnston who raced 90 metres to score adjacent to the uprights. Adam Reynolds converted from close range to reduce the deficit to two points midway through the first half. Both side through everything at each other for the next ten minutes, but it would be the men in red and green who would snatch the lead in the 32nd minute through a try to rookie winger Braidon Burns. Reynolds targeted his former under 20s team mate, Josh Mansour, with a pin-point cross field kick, allowing Burns to fly above Mansour’s head to score against his former club. Reynolds slotted the conversion from the eastern touch line to give the Rabbitohs a 12-8 lead. The Rabbitohs would extend that lead just before the half time break with another super-accurate cross field kick from Reynolds finding the arms of John Sutton who threw a cut-out pass for Alex Johnstone to touch down for his second of the afternoon. Reynolds converted from the western touch line this time to take the score line to 18-8 in favour of South Sydney. Souths were not finished yet for the half with Alex Johnston crossing for his third try of the half in the 40th minute of play. Sam Burgess popped a miracle offload to Cody Walker who charged through a hole and kicked into the open space, Johnston winning the foot race to score. Reynolds converted to take the half time scoreboard to 24-8 in favour of the good guys. The Rabbitohs started the second half the way the finished the first, with Alex Johnston scoring his fourth try of the game in the second minute of the half. Angus Crichton made a huge bust up the right edge and some hot potato footy led Braidon Burns to get an offload away in traffic. The ball made its way to Reynolds who kicked to the left, finding Sam Burgess who offloaded to Johnston, who strolled over for his fourth. Reynolds converted from out wide to establish a 22-point lead. Another left side try to the Rabbitohs came in the 49th minute when Adam Reynolds made a break up the middle, then on the next play changed the angle of the attack and put in a perfect short kick behind the line for Sam Burgess to score. In the 60th minute, Alex Johnston equalled the Club record for the number of tries scored in one match, crossing for his fifth try of the match, which started from a Damien Cook offload. Reynolds converted from in front to establish a 42-8 lead. The Rabbitohs’ attack was on song in the second stanza, but their defence was equally as strong, holding out the Panthers who were consistently attacking in South Sydney’s half for over 15 minutes. The Panthers managed to score a consolation try in the penultimate minute of the match with Josh Mansour scoring off a grubber kick from Waqa Blake. Cleary converted to take the final score line to South Sydney 42 – Penrith 14. Adam Reynolds performed close to his best today, controlling the tempo of the game and the position of the ball with his kicking accuracy. He played a major hand in more than half of the Rabbitohs’ seven tries either with his boot, his pass selection or his running game. The Rabbitohs now have a short turnaround before taking on their traditional rivals and neighbours, the Sydney Roosters, on Friday night at Allianz Stadium.

The NYC Rabbitohs have finished up with a 16-16 draw in their Round 17 clash this afternoon (Sunday) against the Penrith Panthers at ANZ Stadium. The NYC Rabbitohs started the game off strong kicking off and claiming possession by forcing a knock on in the first minute. The Rabbitohs put on a great performance both in attack and defence in the opening minutes, forcing their way into the Panthers danger zone and holding the Panthers from a try holding their player up in goal. And the Rabbitohs were soon rewarded through a sturdy display of teamwork. A swift backline play with a pass out wide saw Jalen Reweti stretch out towards the try line and score the first try for the afternoon. Dean Hawkins slotted the conversion straight through the uprights and the Rabbitohs had a six point to zero lead with nine minutes down. The next 20 minutes of play saw an even effort across the field but the Panthers were the next to add points to the board. After a couple of attempts at the Rabbitohs try line they made their way over through hooker Ray Maroun. Halfback Dean Blore successfully kicked the conversion and the scores were level six points all. But the Rabbitohs wouldn’t let the Panthers have them for long and a quick movement from Dylan O’Connor saw him step through two defenders and over to bring the Rabbitohs back into the lead. The conversion was no good but the Rabbitohs led 10 points to six with a couple of minutes left in the first half. The Panthers were quick to catch up in the second half, firing out their second try four minutes into the half. Blore took the Panthers into the lead for the first time in the match 12 points to 10 with a successful shot at goal. But the Rabbitohs got their hands on the lead once again with Mawene Hiroti slamming the ball down over the try line in the 50th minute. Hawkins made up for his missed conversion nailing the kick and the Rabbitohs took a small lead 16 points to 12. With only a few minutes remaining in the game, the Panthers side powered up and a strong push got them over the line to level the scores 16 points all. A missed conversion locked the scores and the fight was on with two minutes left on the clock. No more points were to be scored and the game would finish up with a draw 16-all.

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership Round 17
v Penrith, North Sydney Oval, Fri Jun 30 7:30pm
LOSS 10-17
Late Changes - Schaumakel, Rochow were out. Graham started centre, Rogers hooker, Rudolf prop, Dietz and Freebairn on the bench.
Penrith have put aside the recent spate of player departures to consolidate third spot on the Intrust Super Premiership NAW ladder, after overcoming North Sydney 17-10 in a tough grinding affair at North Sydney Oval. The win was achieved despite losing Viliame Kikau to the sin-bin - not once, but twice in the opening half - in an at times fiery contest between the competition's two best defensive teams. Once again Darren Nicholls was instrumental in his side’s win, as he put Penrith back in front late in the game with a calmly-taken field goal against his former team, before putting the game beyond doubt setting up Liam Martin for his maiden try at this level. Conversely in a losing team, fullback Eli Levido was equally outstanding, scoring a double and defusj g everything Penrith threw at him. Penrith’s resolute defence was put to test early in the game conceding several penalties culminating with Kikau being put in the sin-bin for ten minutes for back-chatting to referee Kasey Badger in the ninth minute of play. However the Bears bombed a golden opportunity to score first points when a shift left looked likely to result in a try only for centre Murphy to lose possession as he crossed the line. The Bears also found themselves in similar trouble with Badger when they too were reduced to 12 men when Cheyne Whitelaw was sent to the sin-bin, which Penrith took full advantage of, to open the scoring through Wayde Egan with a quick dart from dummy half, to lead 6-0 after 16 minutes. Despite trailing, Norths enjoyed the better of possession and territory ad it was no surprise to see them level on the scores when Luke Kelly’s cross-field kick took a wicked bounce, eluding fullback Jarome Luai and into the hands of his opposite number to score after 24 minutes. The game took another twist when Viliame Kikau was controversially sent to the sin-bin for a second time in the opening half, this time when in possession short of the try line. Despite being a man down, the visitors were able to hang on to go into the sheds level at 6-6. It was a different story after the break as the Bears took quick advantage of their one-man superiority to take a 10-6 lead, when Levido sliced past the Penrith outside backs to score out wide. The game ebbed and flowed but it was Penrith who would score next and level the scores through prolific try scorer Maiko Sivo, who cleaned up a loose Bears pass and powered his way 30 metres to crash over out wide. The visitors had the opportunity to regain the lead inside the final ten minutes, when an enterprising last tackle play saw Nicholls go to the line and offload only for the ball to evade Sivo and go into touch. But Penrith would not be denied the lead in their next set of six when Nicholls calmly nailed a field goal from 25 metres out, directly in front and it was fitting that it would be the Panthers half that would seal a valuable two points, coming up with the clutch play on the last tackle, breaking the line before passing back inside to back-rower Liam Martin to give Penrith their third successive win.
