LOSS 10-23

The South Sydney Rabbitohs went down to the North Queensland Cowboys 23-10 in front of a crowd of 11,217 this afternoon (Sunday) in their Round 19 home game at Barlow Park in Cairns. The Rabbitohs line-up saw a late exclusion of Aaron Gray due to injury with Braidon Burns coming in as his replacement. Robert Jennings came back into the team returning from injury while Head Coach Michael Maguire made some late tactical changes replacing Damien Cook on the interchange bench with Cam Murray. The Rabbitohs took to the field tackling the North Queensland afternoon heat with temperatures reaching a high of 27 degrees Celsius. With a focus this week on completing sets, the Rabbitohs were on a good run, with a 100% completion rate after the first ten minutes. Adam Reynolds kicking precision was on point but it was his running that impressed the crowd. The Rabbitohs were the first to add points to the scoreboard, when Reynolds showed off his sleek moves running the ball at the line, side stepping his defendant and passing the ball off to Cody Walker who stepped over a Cowboys defender and slid under the posts. Reynolds made his try even sweeter, kicking the conversion straight through the uprights and the Rabbitohs led six points to zero in the 15th minute. The Cowboys were quick to respond and level the scores with Jason Taumalolo powering through the Rabbitohs defence and scoring in the middle. Ethan Lowes conversion had the scores locked six points each with just over 20 minutes left on the clock. The Cowboys added another four-pointer bringing the Rabbitohs into the middle before sending the ball out wide for winger Kyle Feldt to take the ball over the line. Lowe missed the conversion and the Rabbitohs fell behind six points to the Cowboys 10. The Cowboys would make it to the Rabbitohs line again this time through Hess mirroring his team’s first try in the afternoon. Lowe made up for his previously missed conversion marking the final points for the half and the Rabbitohs had some catching up to do falling behind six points to 16. At half-time the Rabbitohs had a completion rate of 82% and held just a little less possession than the Cowboys with 47% compared to their 53%. The second half saw the Cowboys extend their lead further, with Granville finding a gap in the Rabbitohs defence and placing the ball down for their fourth try. The successful conversion pushed the Rabbitohs further behind six points to 22. The Rabbitohs continued to run the ball and apply pressure on the Cowboys defence but clinical errors again got to the Souths side. Yet they found their momentum in the 68th minute with a quick pass from Reynolds to Jennings who flicked it out wide to Burns to fly into the corner. Reynolds conversion unluckily hit the posts and the Rabbitohs were still behind ten points to 22. WIth three minutes remaining on the clock, Cowboys fullback Lachlan Coote took a shot at goal nailing his field goal and adding a point to their lead. The Rabbitohs kept up their effots but couldn’t capitalise on their chances and the Cowboys proved too good on the day taking home a 23-10 victory.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 19

v North Queensland, Redfern Oval, Sat Jul 15 1:00pm

WIN 32-18

Late Changes - Rodwell was trimmed 24 hours before the match. Hiroti Graham and Hippi were out. Mougios starts left centre, Leddy hooker, Henry Fuimaono prop, Johnstone second row, Kolomatangi five-eighth, Manowski and Ili on the bench.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs’ under 20s outfit have extended their undefeated run to eight matches with a solid 32 points to 18 victory over the North Queensland Cowboys at the Simply Energy High Performance Centre at Redfern Oval today (Saturday). Winger Jalen Reweti scored a double to help the young Rabbitohs seal their sixth win from their last eight matches plus two draws over the previous two games. Kalyn Ponga opened the scoring for the Cowboys giving the away side a six-nil lead after 18 minutes, but Souths would strike back five minutes later when fullback Beau Cordtz made a break, putting Blake Manowski away for the try. Dean Hawkins converted to level the scores at six-all. The Rabbitohs scored back-to-back tries when Harry Leddy broke the line to score two minutes later, with Hawkins’ conversion giving Souths their first lead of the day. A further three minutes would pass before South Sydney would score again, this time Reweti touching down for his first try of the afternoon after some great work from captain Kalani Ili and Cordtz. Reweti scored his second just before the break, taking the half time lead to 20-6 in favour of the good guys. The Cowboys started to mount a comeback with Kurt Wiltshire scoring in the 46th minute and Jake Clifford in the 53rd, reducing the deficit to just two points. The young Rabbitohs then kicked it back into gear with tries to Nic Mougios and Gabe Hamlin in the final five minutes securing the victory. The Rabbitohs took on the Cowboys in the middle of the field and won the battle of the big boys. Beau Cordtz was dangerous at the back and Gabe Hamlin worked himself to a stand-still, scoring a well-deserved try at the end of the match as well as kicking the first goal of his NYC career.

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership Round 19

v Mt Pritchard, North Sydney Oval, Sun Jul 16 3:00pm

DRAW 20-20

Late Changes - Burns, Britt, Murray, Williams were out. Mociedreke starts centre, Rogers hooker, Cherrington prop, Grienke second row, with Dietz, Rudolf and Siolo on the bench.

The North Sydney Bears and Mounties have fought out an entertaining 20-all draw at North Sydney Oval in Round 19 of the Intrust Super Premiership NSW. Mounties led for 79 minutes but a last-second penalty goal to Bears fullback Eli Levido secured a point for the home side. A mistake from the kick-off gave the Bears a great opportunity to open the scoring, but Mounties held on as both sides fought for the ascendency of the match. Levido put his foot over the touchline bringing the ball back and Mounties made them pay, Brent Naden going over under the posts in the fifth minute. Mounties halfback Isaac John made no mistake and his side led 6-0. A penalty from the opening tackle in the ensuing set marched Mounties downfield and a neat grubber forced a dropout as the visitors dominated the opening stages. A mistake from Bears winger Tautalatasi Tasi just 30 metres out from his own line put the home side under more pressure. Back to back penalties kept Mounties camped on the Bears' line and winger Alofi Mataele scored his side's second try in the 13th minute. John's attempt hit the left upright and Mounties led 10-0. Tasi made up for his earlier error, receiving a long ball with plenty of space, and he was good enough to find the line from 20 metres out to get the home side on the board after 19 minutes. Levido made no mistake from out wide to make it 10-6. The Bears were slowly working their way into the match after their earlier woes and forced a repeat set in the 23rd minute, but Mounties managed to hold on and they worked their way upfield and extended their lead. After a long break by winger Mataele, Oldfield fooled everyone with a sneaky try in the corner to extend his side's lead. John's conversion curled in from the sideline and Mounties led 16-6. Mounties prop Liam Knight was put on report for an incident in the play-the-ball area when his side was on the attack and the Bears received the penalty and went on the attack from the halfway line. A towering bomb was spilled by Mataele and the home side had a full set with around 10 minutes left in the half, trailing by 10 points and they managed a lucky try; the dreaded second kick struck again, allowing the Bears to edge closer to their opponents late in the half. On the last tackle, the Bears shifted it right and put in a grubber but it ricocheted back into the arms of halfback Luke Kelly, and he put in a second kick and won the race to the loose ball for their second try. Levido added the extras to make it 16-12 with eight minutes left in the first half. A 40/20 gave the Bears a great attacking opportunity as the half wound down but the early kick went over the dead ball line, and Mounties survived, leading 16-12 at the break. The sun was still high above the O'Reilly and Duncan Thompson stands when both teams resumed proceedings, Mounties enjoying a four-point advantage. Mounties extended their lead when interchange Jack Nelson crossed out wide in the 53rd minute, John missed with his attempt but with just under half an hour remaining, they led 20-12. After 62 minutes of play, Bears interchange Toby Rudolf ran into a hole down the left edge and raced over for a vital try to keep his side in the match. Levido converted to get the Bears closer, trailing 20-18. Through Levido, however, the Bears kicked a penalty goal on the siren to make it 20-all.
