WIN 36-18
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have won their third game in a row tonight (Friday) at ANZ Stadium, accounting for the New Zealand Warriors 36-18 in front of a crowd of 6,213. Fullback Alex Johnston’s hat trick gives him a handy lead at the top of the NRL’s try scorers list, but it was the electrifying play of the Rabbitohs’ throughout the second half which had South Sydney Members on their feet. The Warriors had the better of the field position early and would only take six minutes for them to post points following a mix up between Bryson Goodwin and Alex Johnston. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck was on the end of a neat backline movement, beating defenders to score. Issac Luke converted to give the visitors a six-nil lead. The Rabbitohs would strike back nine minutes later off the back of two penalties which gave them their first opportunity in attacking territory. The ball was swung to right and 15 metres out from the line the defensive line opened up like Sydney Heads and the competition’s leading try scorer, Alex Johnston, strolled through to score to the right of the uprights. Adam Reynolds uncharacteristically hooked the shot at goal at the Warriors maintained a two point advantage. The Warriors were the next to score off the back of three penalties which piggy-backed them up field. The try to Simon Mannering was a soft one, crashing over under the posts and next to the previous ruck. Issac Luke converted from in front to give the Warriors a 12-4 lead after 28 minutes. With five minutes left on the clock in the first half, rookie Cameron Murray would score his first try in the NRL with a fantastic effort to get past internationals Issac Luke and Kieran Foran to score under the posts. Reynolds converted to take the score to 12-10 in favour of the New Zealanders. A mistake from Ken Maumalo and then a penalty to the left of the sticks gave Reynolds the chance to level the scores in the final minute of the half, and level them he did, taking the score line to 12-all at the break. The Rabbitohs only had 44% of the ball in the first half and a couple of crucial errors thwarted a number of chances for the home team to score. To be going into the break at 12-all was not great, but not the end of the world for Coach Michael Maguire either. The second half got underway with the Rabbitohs having the better of the territory, leading to Kyle Turner getting over the line after some beautiful organisational work from John Sutton in the middle of the field. Turner however was denied the try by the video ref following a great tackle from the Warriors, holding him up off the ground then to see the ball spilled over the line. In the next of six the Warriors would march up field and score their third try of the night, and the second for their captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, in the 49th minute of play. Luke converted from out wide to establish a six-point lead for the Warriors. Reynolds would add another six points to his tally in the 56th minute when he chipped kicked ahead to try and get a repeat set. The ball deflected off Foran and bounced back into the arms of Reynolds who touched down beside the posts. He converted his own try to level the scores at 18-all. Just three minutes later the Rabbitohs would take the lead for the first time in the match when Alex Johnston scored his 21st try of the season. It was again captain John Sutton who would set up the try, putting Johnston through a hole to race away, dummy past the fullback and score under the posts. Reynolds’ conversion gave Souths a 24-18 lead. A classy display from the South Sydney Members in attendance followed as Issac Luke was replaced at the 60 minute mark. The Rabbitohs faithful had not forgotten the fine service Luke had given the Club for many years and gave him a standing ovation as he made his way to the sideline. Reynolds had an opportunity to extend the lead in the 62nd minute with penalty goal from long range, but the kick missed and the Rabbitohs maintained their six-point advantage. Reynolds would not make the same mistake again however, slotting a penalty goal from close range and in front in the 65th minute to extend South Sydney’s lead to eight with 15 minutes left on the clock. Souths were not finished there with Cody Walker crossing the stripe in the 68th minute after some hot potato footy from the men in red and green. Robbie Farah was involved twice in the play which saw Walker score under the posts, and Reynolds’ conversion gave Souths a 32-18 lead after 69 minutes. Alex Johnston scored his hat trick in the 73rd minute when he raced around the outside of the Warriors defence to score in the left hand corner, burning past Roger Tuivasa-Sheck in the process. The Rabbitohs should have been ahead by more at the break but a more controlled, yet exhilarating, second half performance led to the South Sydney victory. Alex Johnston was at his potent best with John Sutton controlling things when required. Adam Reynolds was heavily involved and the forward pack was led by Thomas Burgess and Angus Crichton in attack and by Cameron Murray and Damien Cook in defence.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 24
v Warriors, Redfern Oval, Sat Aug 19 1:00pm
WIN 68-10
Late Changes - Doueihi was trimmed 24 hours before the match. Koloamatangi, Mougios and Shiach-Wise are out.
The Young Rabbitohs have demolished the last-placed New Zealand Warriors 68-10 at Redfern Oval today, having a field day in front of a vocal home crowd. Despite the Warriors being glued firmly to the bottom of the Holden Cup Ladder, the visitors started the encounter strongly against the Young Rabbitohs – threatening the line and almost crossing through fullback Lee Turner in the 4th minute. The defence of the Rabbitohs handled the early pressure well and it would be a slick shift to the right which would open the scoring as Beau Cordtz joined the attack and set up Tyrone Taukamo to score in the 6th minute. The winger finished strongly but windy conditions made it difficult for halfback Dean Hawkins to convert. It wouldn’t take long for the Young Rabbitohs to find their groove, attacking the left edge this time to great success as Reweti found space to round the Warriors defence and score in the 10th minute. However, Hawkins couldn’t hit the mark from his conversion, kicking into the wind next to the touchline. The Warriors edges would prove vulnerable with centre Dylan O’Connor making the most of some poor defence to break a tackle and slip through for a try. Hawkins would again find it difficult to convert from the touchlines and the Rabbitohs would take a 12-0 lead after 20 minutes. The Young Rabbitohs would have another great chance in the 21st minute after Jalen Reweti would break the line and travel up field, throwing a floating pass back inside to Sam Johnstone who’d commit a double movement while trying to score. Halfback Dean Hawkins would get in on the action in the 24th minute breaking the Warriors line and crossing just to the left of the post. The conversion would be simpler for the Hawkins and he’d slot his first kick of the day. Coach Ryan Carr would bring Jordan Mailata into the fray in the 28th minute with the giant prop’s first run resulting in Warriors halfback Dylan Tavita being brought from the field for treatment. The following run would see Mailata bash through the Warriors line and score under the posts in the 30th minute. Hawkins would convert from just in front, seeing the Young Rabbitohs lead 24-0. The Young Rabbitohs would shift down a gear for the remainder of the first half with the New Zealand Warriors getting some chances at the home side’s try line. Souths would pay for the lost intensity when Warriors prop Melino Fineanganofo would score from dummy half. They would convert through Kane Telea and half time would see the encounter at 24-6 in the Rabbitohs favour. The second half would start with a flurry of points for the home side with Jordan Mailata crashing over for his second try in the 43rd minute and Blake Manowski scoring in the 45th minute. Hawkins would convert both tries to give the Young Rabbitohs a 36 – 6 lead. It would continue to be one way traffic as the inform Rabbitohs would dismantle the New Zealand Warriors in front of a vocal home crowd. Dylan O’Connor and Tyrone Taukamo would also bag their second try for the Young Rabbitohs in the 48th and 56th minutes. Hawkins converted one of the two kicks to push the Rabbitohs to a 46-6 lead. The Young Rabbitohs would crack the 50 point mark as Siosifa Talakai carried several defenders over the try line to score in the 60th minute. Hawkins converted the try with little difficulty. The contest was well over by the 63rd minute as Jalen Reweti streaked away on the wing to score the Rabbitohs 11th try and the fourth double from a player in Red and Green. Hawkins couldn’t convert, Rabbitohs leading 56-6. While there would be no surprise of the outcome considering the Warriors form, the real surprise was how long it took dynamic fullback Beau Cordtz to get on the scoreboard – in this case taking until the 66th minute to produce a brilliant solo run and score under the posts. Hawkins convert, Rabbitohs 62-6 Warriors. The Souths nerds butted heads after Kalani Ili scored a try in the 71st minute, they discovered that the Young Rabbitohs needed to end the contest with a points difference of 65 to jump into 6th place on the Holden Cup ladder. Hawkins converted, Rabbitohs 68- 6 Warriors. Three points needed! That aspiration would take a hit when Warriors centre Gibson Popoalii would cross in the 76th minute. The conversion would go wide and the Rabbitohs would trail the 65 point margin by 7 points.

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership Round 24
v Penrith, St Marys Stadium, Sat Aug 19 6:0pm
LOSS 16-24
Late Changes - Jennings and Gosiewski are out. Mociedreke starts centre, Rogers second row, Freebairn and Williams added to the bench.
A star-studded Penrith side headlined by Mitch Rein and Dean Whare have kept their slim hopes of snatching second spot in the Intrust Super Premiership NSW alive, doing just enough in the end to record a less-than-convincing win over a determined North Sydney Bears at St Marys Leagues Stadium. The score could have been anything after 17 minutes when Penrith, on the back of their strong go forward from Sitaleki Akauola, Corey Waddell and Viliame Kikau, jumped out of the blocks to lead 14-0. To their credit, however, the Bears fought back twice to remain well in the hunt for a surprise result, before Darren Nicholls sealed the win with a late penalty goal. The win sees the Panthers continue their recent dominance over North Sydney, having defeated the Bears earlier this season 17-10, but in fairness to the visitors they came into this game minus Robert Jennings and Jack Gosiewski. The Panthers got off to a dream start capitalising on an early penalty to open the scoring inside 90 seconds through a try in the left corner to Jed Cartwright after a nice offload inside from Kikau. The Bears soon found themselves eight points down inside as many minutes when Waddell, standing one off the ruck, put a huge fend on his opposite number to storm through the line and score out wide from 20 metres out. The Panthers’ dominance in possession and territory enabled the home side to extend the lead out to 14 when reported Warrington Wolves signing, Akauola crashed over from a Mitch Rein face ball at the line to score his opening try of the season. It took the Bears 25 minutes to have an attacking set inside Penrith’s 20 and they made the most of that foray when a Luke Kelly grubber allowed outside back Sitiveni Moceidreke to regather and score the visitors’ opening try. But the Bears who finally playing with some much needed momentum at the back end of the half, were dealt a blow when Jason Clark was ruled out for the rest of the game with concussion. Despite the setback, North Sydney soon had their second try, when a quick tap from a penalty taken by Fred Mauala 10 metres out caught the Panthers goal-line napping, and the interchange forward crashed over next to the posts to reduce the gap to four, before the Panthers edged further ahead through a Nicholls penalty goal after the siren to lead 16-10 at the break. What was a free-flowing contest in the opening half developed into an old-fashioned arm wrestle in the second as both sides trading converted tries. Tony Satini in his first appearance at this level since returning back to Penrith, played to the whistle, picking up the loose ball deemed to be played at by the Bears covering defence and streaked away to score, which was duly converted by Nicholls to put Penrith out to a 22-10 lead after 56 minutes. The Bears responded eight minutes later when Luke Kelly’s cross-field grubber kick rebounded off a Panther into the waiting arms of five-eighth Adam Doueihi who dived over to bridge the gap back to six points and it was anyone’s game at that point. With the game on the line, both sides were guilty of being unable to convert pressure into points as plenty of niggle crept into the match, which eventually saw Kaide Ellis (Panthers) and Brad Deitz (North Sydney) sin-binned by Chris Treneman with eight minutes remaining, as a resulting from yet another off-the-ball incident. The Bears had one last chance to level the scores when Tautalasi Tasi had an opportunity to score in the corner only to lose control of the ball when put under pressure from Maika Sivo, before the Panthers finally sealed an important two points when the competition’s leading point scorer kicked another penalty goal.
