WIN 18-8
Question marks over the make-up of the spine at the South Sydney Rabbitohs may be solved with Alex Johnston and Damien Cook both performing strongly in the side's 18-8 victory over the Wigan Warriors at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night. The Rabbitohs were without prized recruit Dane Gagai, along with regular stars Cody Walker, Sam Burgess and Angus Crichton for the encounter, but it was Cook and Johnston who showed enough in their stints to send Anthony Seibold a clear message. There were also positive signs for the Rabbitohs coach with Tom and George Burgess having solid games. Wigan were on the board early with a Sean O'Loughlin cross-field kick bouncing terribly for Rabbitohs winger Campbell Graham to enable Tom Davies to plant the ball down for a 4-0 lead in the sixth minute. The Warriors looked to be over again through Davies four minutes later but the winger couldn't hold onto a Sam Tomkins pass with the try-line wide open. South Sydney clicked into gear following the error to lay on two tries in quick succession. Farah and Damien Cook combined to send Tom Burgess over from short range, before Graham finished off a Hymel Hunt line-break to cross out wide in the 18th minute. Things got worse for Wigan following the try with Cook splitting the defence up the middle, before interchange player Liam Marshall was sent to the sin-bin for a blatant professional foul the following play. The Bunnies took advantage of the extra man in attack with a training-run shift to the right sending Richard Kennar over in the corner. Wigan fought back on the stroke of the half-time break with Davis doing well to finish off a right-side movement and reach out for a double. Both sides struggled to build any momentum in the second half with a host of big names watching on from the sidelines. Veteran rake Robbie Farah was brought from the field following a 60-minute effort shifting between hooker and halfback. The result was sealed in the 76th minute when Cook linked with Mark Nicholls late in the game to send Adam Doueihi through a hole untouched. Doueihi, who turned heads during Lebanon's World Cup campaign, finished off the game with a conversion – his first of the night – after struggling with goal-kicking early.

v Wentworthville, Ringrose Park, Thu Feb 8 7:00pm
DRAW 12-12
Match is being played in four quarters. In their first hit-out of the year, and on their 110th birthday, the North Sydney Bears drew 12-12 with Wentworthville Magpies at Ringrose Park. While the Intrust Super Premiership side heavily featured plenty of young up and coming talent, their opponents opted to field a side filled with NRL experience. Being a trial match, the game was played in quarters to give every player a chance to showcase their skills. The trial match also marked the return of halfback Connor Tracey, who played his first match in three seasons after suffering back-to-back ACL tears. While the match began with errors and wayward passes, typical of a pre-season hit-out, both sides played with plenty of intensity, particularly in the opening stages. The defensive effort from the Bears was led by back rower Dean Britt, who was a standout early on, producing some big hits. The Magpies pressed the Bears line early and force a repeat set, however on the next set the boys in red and black showed defensive toughness by bundling their opponents into touch through Braidon Burns and Mawene Hiroti. Norths would be the first to break the deadlock through their winger Hiroti, who scored in the corner after a slick backline move, initiated by Tracey. The try was converted from the sideline by fullback Jesse Arthars to give the Bears a 6-0 lead. Soon after however, the Bears conceded an error inside their own 10 metre line, which allowed their opponents to swoop and score through acting half Reed Mahoney. After converting his own try, the scores sat at 6-6 after half an hour. The rest of the half would result in plenty of handling errors from both sides, with momentum continuing to sway back and forth. Bears front rower Sam Johnstone suffered a head knock but was able to leave the field on his own accord. While Norths were forced to defend the last three sets on their own line, they were able to keep the scores to 6-6 at the break. The second half was also defensively centred but once again Hiroti was the first to give his side an advantage, breaking the line off the back of another fine backline move. While he wasn’t able to touch down, the play resulted in a Wentworthville sin bin. The final quarter started with Wentworthville dropping the ball off the kickoff, however the Bears failed to capitalise. Just a few minutes later, Norths conceded a try off a ruck penalty, with the Magpies taking the lead through Josh Cullin-Minhinnick, with Kauri Appouri kicking the conversion to give them a 12-6 lead with under 15 minutes to play. Although the home side kept control of the match for the majority of the final quarter, the Bears’ strong defence kept them in the match, and their persistence was rewarded with a last-minute try to Amaruki Veamatahau. Arthars provided the cutout pass for his winger to touch down, and again nailed the conversion from the sideline. Back rowers Siosifa Talakai and Lucky Ta’avale played strongly throughout the match, while Arthars was solid throughout with his safe hands and high involvement in both attack and defence. Halfback Tracey rewarded himself with some much-deserved chocolate after a three year break, after pledging not to eat any until he made a successful return to the field.

U20 NSW Jersey Flegg Cup - Trial
v Parramatta, 4:30pm
LOSS 12-22
The Parramatta Eels Jersey Flegg side have come away with a 22-12 victory over in their pre-season clash against the North Sydney Bears at Ringrose Park this afternoon (Thursday 8 February). A first half that was dominated by the Blue & Gold saw the young Eels take an early lead off the back of a wealth of possession and field position before a second half fight back and late points by the Bears saw the Eels take a ten point lead. The young Blue & Gold put first points on the scoreboard in the 5th minute of the clash. A string of quick passes through the hands of the Eels left edge backline found winger Taufa Afu crossing over in the corner, with some quick hands from fullback John Fonua who chimed into the backline movement. The next 15 minutes of the opening quarter saw the Eels hold a heavy weight of possession and field position, but were unable to capitalise on their opportunities. A strong charge from forward Michael Tupou nearly had the team’s second try of the afternoon but a one on one strip on the try line saw the score remain 4-0. The second quarter picked up right where the first quarter finished, with the Eels maintaining their strong field position and continued to build pressure. A strong charge from centre Tuimavave Afualo put the Eels inside the Bears 30m, before a short side raid found halfback Dylan Brown surging forward and putting forward Salesi Faingaa through a gaping hole with a brilliant offload. But a miraculous tackle from the Bears fullback saved a certain try, holding Faingaa up over the line. However the Eels maintained their composure and again found their way into the Bears half after strong charges from Haze Dunster and Brown in support. The ball spread to the left with a cut out ball putting centre Noel Aukafolau over out wide to give the Eels a 8-0 lead after 30 minutes. The Eels crossed again just four minutes later, when Dylan Brown, who was now playing at fullback, chimed into the backline, receiving the ball after going through the hands of Joey Taipari and Jaydn Field. The Eels taking a 12-0 lead into the sheds at half time. The second half saw a handful of changes to the Eels side, with a fair few positional changes made and played given their opportunity in the Blue & Gold. Despite a wealth of possession, some heavy weighted kicks and crucial handling errors saw the Eels unable to capitalize on their opportunities down the Bears end. The Bears eventually crossing in the 50th minute of the clash when their left centre ducked and dived, and swerved his way to the line to score to the left of the posts. The Eels struck back just before the end of the third quarter when forward Bruce Wakeling powered his way over the line after a strong charge close to the line. The conversion was unsuccessful hitting the posts, giving the Eels a 16-4 lead. The Bears began to find their rhythm in the second half, making plenty of metres through the ruck, and after a break down their right edge from deep inside their own half, they went on to score on the next play in the left corner. However the Eels stuck back shortly after. After a strong charge by Beni Valu, carrying a handful of defenders, the Eels made their way inside the Bears 20m, and after a quick play the ball, Jesse Cronin scooted and dove over from dummy half. The Eels taking a 22-8 lead after 74 minutes. Some enterprising play from both sides in the final minutes of the clash saw both teams looking for points and after a chip and chase from the Bears was regathered, they streaked away to score out wide as the fulltime siren rang. The Eels Jersey Flegg side claiming a 22-12 victory.
