WIN 34-6
With the Burgess brothers in full cry and the red and green full of running, South Sydney Rabbitohs have delivered Anthony Seibold's first victory as an NRL coach with a 34-6 drubbing of Manly Sea Eagles. In suitably English rain the British brothers belted Manly up and down the sodden ANZ Stadium turf, combining for 343 running metres and forcing a number of errors in the seven-tries to-one thumping. Sam Burgess in particular walloped anything that moved in maroon and white, while twins George and Tom ran with the vigour of their early NRL years, without the fumbles of more recent ones. Similarly maligned in the past few seasons, Alex Johnston looked more at home than ever before in the foundation club's famous No.1 jumper, while wingers Robert Jennings and Richie Kennar finished with five tries between them. Manly meanwhile dealt almost exclusively in mistakes, their 13 errors in the wet a polar opposite of last week's 54-0 thrashing of Parramatta in 39-degree heat. The rot took just two minutes to set in. Despite a crunching one-on-one hit on Souths back-rower Angus Crichton by rookie Lachlan Croker on one edge, Jennings was still crossing down the other after a sharp left-side shift by Cody Walker. Once penalties and errors were traded again in the wet Johnston burned Manly once more, swooping on a Cherry-Evans grubber and scorching 95 metres downfield for an early 10-0 lead. As the Rabbitohs made all the running, wet weather football was shelved for their third try to Kennar. An expansive shift almost had Greg Inglis sliding over down the left, before a cross field kick was fumbled by Brian Kelly, putting Kennar's third four-pointer in as many games for his new club on a platter. A scything support run by Tom Trbojevic split the Rabbitohs in the shadows of halftime, only for a desperate Johnston tackle, and the poor fifth tackle options that had plagued Manly all day denying them once more. The Sea Eagles continued to shoot themselves in the foot from the outset of the second stanza as well, Addin Fonua-Blake inviting Souths to shunt him into touch from the first kick-off. By the 46th minute Jennings had a déjà vu double, with a second-man play sending him over in the same fashion as his opening try. The visitors' first points came in stark contrast, with Jackson Hastings dummying through some soft defence from acting half. Regular programming resumed within two minutes though, Kennar nabbing his second when Trbojevic spilled a bomb from Adam Doueihi straight into the Bunny's bread basket. A third left-side shift had Jennings in for a third just past the hour-mark, while Hymel Hunt helped himself to one for the road down Manly's flimsy left-edge with two minutes to go.

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership - Round 3
v St George-Illawarra, 3:00pm
LOSS 4-22
Late Changes - Brittian, Johnstone and Martin was out, Josh Cook started hooker, Clark prop, Talakai second row, Turner lock. Kennedy, Kolomatangi and Freebairn on the bench. A Darren Nicholls-led St George Illawarra Dragons side has beaten the North Sydney Bears 22-4 in Round 3 of the Intrust Super Premiership NSW at Ron Costello Oval, Shellharbour. Nicholls’ Dragons were too sharp and too committed for the Bears who, despite some stinging defence and glimpses of potential, couldn't crack their opponent’s defence for almost 70 minutes. St George Illawarra’s No.7, alongside halves partner Adam Clune, expertly controlled proceedings for most of the match, keeping the Bears on the back foot with a smart kicking game and clever tactics. The match’s opening exchanges showed promising signs for the Bears, but the Dragons, who crossed first in the 10th minute, ultimately led from start to finish. It was hard-charging front-rower Josh Kerr who opened proceedings, crashing over from metres out following a zig-zagging run and a pass from winger Jordan Pereira. Fullback Jai Field’s conversion made it 6-0. The Bears thought they had entered the scorebook eight minutes later with a right-to-left shift on the Dragons’ line, but the play that ultimately saw Mawene Hiroti cross the line was deemed illegal. Just seconds later Field and the Dragons had a chance of their own, with the light-footed fullback stepping his way into open space before a draw-and-pass effort, after some sublime lead-up play, floated forward and to the turf. For most of the first half, it was Nicholls’ kicking game that proved the difference. His kick saw the Dragons have possession on the North Sydney line in the 30th minute – and a penalty from 11 metres, tapped quickly by Jacob Host, caught the Bears off guard, the second-rower crashing over for an all-too-easy four-pointer. Field’s second conversion took the score to 12-0. The Bears compounded that error immediately after, kicking the ball out on the full from the restart. A brilliant short over-the-top pass by Dragons five-eighth Clune set up the home side’s third of the half, a looping ball finding an unmarked Jordan Pereira to crash over on the western touchline. A miraculous into-the-wind conversion – one of the most unlikely fans will ever see – from Field took the lead to 18, one the Dragons took into the break. After conceding 18 points in the first half, the Bears started the second half in the worst possible fashion – conceding four back-to-back penalties including one on the first play of the half, before the Dragons struck once again, some slick hands finding an unmarked John Tohi to crash over from close range. The Dragons’ defence finally cracked in the 69th minute when Field failed to clean up a short kick and North Sydney winger Amanaki Veamatahau, who was close to scoring a try in the opening minutes of the game, swooped on the loose ball from a metre out. For the home side, regular contributors Field and Clune were strong in support of Nicholls, alongside powerful performances from their forwards including Host and Kerr. The Bears never stopped trying, as some stinging efforts in the final minutes showed, with five-eighth Connor Tracey, prop Jason Clark and Kyle Turner some of their most involved.

NSWRL Women's Premiership - Round 1
v Newcastle, 1:30pm
WIN 54-4
Late Changes - Maza was 18th girl. The womens premiership is 2 x 40 minute halves with unlimited interchanges. Competition commenced in 2005 but is the first time Souths have competed History has been made as the South Sydney Rabbitohs women's side clinched victory in their first ever match, destroying opponents Newcastle CRL 54-4 at Redfern Oval. The match began as a scrappy affair with plenty of cobwebs being blown out as both sides gave their fair share of errors and penalties. The home side scored first through forward Eunice Grimes, who barged her way over the line through a powerful run. Halfback Maddie Studdon converted to give Souths a 6-0 lead. Newcastle hit back in the 25th minute through Cassie Ormsby after some ill discipline from the Rabbitohs gave their opponents field position. With the conversion unsuccessful, the Red and Green remained ahead 6-4. In a match dominated by the forwards, it was no surprise to see Grimes get over the line again to put Souths ahead 12-4 after another conversion from Studdon. Sharon McGrady added some bench impact and bagged herself a try after a break from lock Jasmin Allende. With a third successful conversion, the Rabbitohs sat 18-4 ahead at half-time. With the first half nerves out of the way, the Rabbitohs came straight out of the blocks, with Allende's hard work earning her a deserved try. Studdon converted for a 24-4 lead. The forwards continued to roll downfield and second rower Chloe Caldwell added her name to the try-scorers list as Allende and hooker Rebecca Riley combined to break open the Newcastle defence. In a 10 minute period, the Rabbitohs put on two more tries with Nakia Davis-Welsh diving over from dummy half and Allende once again breaking the line, scoring a powerful try. Despite the game already being won, the Rabbitohs continued to gain their momentum, with Taleena Simon and Emma Gillogly touching down. Studdon finished the match converting all nine tries, including nailing a sideline conversion in the last minute.
