LOSS 12-16
The Dragons have survived the gustiest of green and red revivals to secure a club-record fifth straight win to start the season, downing the Rabbitohs 16-12 in heart-stopping fashion at Jubilee Oval. With just nine minutes to play the Dragons were cruising at 16-2, having lapped up almost 70 per cent of first-half possession and watched Bunnies linchpin Adam Reynolds forced from the field due to concussion. But with Cody Walker pulling a game-turning try out of his hat and Greg Inglis following suit two minutes later, Souths had the locals well and truly rattled. With all the running late in the piece it was a cruel dropped ball by Walker, the brightest spark in cardinal and myrtle by some margin, that eventually sounded the death knell for Souths. Until the Rabbitohs late resurgence, history had the Dragons daring to dream, even if their fans weren't. The Red V faithful have been burnt as recently as last year by their team's fade-outs, when six wins from their first seven games weren't enough for a top-eight finish. But with 10 competition points in the bank already after just five weeks, a finals berth is now the Dragons' to lose. Of the 12 teams to start a season in the same fashion since 1998, only one has watched September from the sidelines – the Cowboys when Johnathan Thurston missed half the 2006 season with a dislocated knee. A rough and ready win over the fast-finishing Rabbitohs should only swell St George Illawarra's confidence, while Souths can take plenty of heart from leaving it all and then some on the paddock. The Rabbitohs' courage under fire was there from the outset, when Alex Johnston weathered the first of testing Dragons bombs that kept coming all night. The next time Ben Hunt took to the air Dane Gagai couldn't handle the swirling ball. But when the home side sent all 108 kilos of Nene Macdonald at them the pair somehow managed to hold him up boots and all, with Johnston's foot getting underneath the Steeden to save a try. Just as remarkable was the Dragons' first points. Rising centre Euan Aitken stopped, started and beat Inglis all ends up on the outside from close range. Gareth Widdop added a penalty goal before McDonald was denied again in the 32nd minute, this time by a controversial obstruction ruling against Tariq Sims which had the Kogarah faithful fuming. A penalty on the halftime bell put Souths on the board, but Matt Dufty's sublime speed soon after the break looked to have put the Bunnies to bed. With the Rabbitohs on the attack an errant pass found its way to Hunt, who in turn found Dufty on a 60m sprint to the line. A Damien Cook bust had Souths in striking distance soon after and Robert Jennings setting sail for the corner, only for Jason Nightingale to celebrate his 250th outing by crunching him into touch. The Rabbitohs kept coming, and the Dragons kept denying, before a clever run around from Walker produced the visitors' first try. Quick hands involving the Rabbitohs five-eighth a minute later had Inglis over for a try of his own and a grandstand finish was in the offing.

WIN 28-10
Late Chaanges - Tago, Britt, Rodwell, Talakai are out. Burns starts centre, Farah hooker, Johnstone prop, Butler and Ta'avale second row, Kolomatangi lock, Brittian, Kennedy and Williams on the bench. With former Brydens Lawyers NSW Blues hooker Robbie Farah leading the way, the North Sydney Bears have finally opened their account for the 2018 Intrust Super Premiership NSW with a 28-10 win over the Newcastle Knights. The visitors got off to the perfect start at McDonald Jones Stadium, after Newcastle second-rower Bobby Treacy was placed on report by referee Darian Furner for a late shoulder charge on North Sydney half Connor Tracy. From the ensuing penalty, Tracy popped up a nice pass for Bears centre Campbell Graham to burst over from close range for the opening try after just 70 seconds on the clock. Dean Hawkins converted to give Norths an early 6-0 lead. Both sides then had early chances inside their opponent’s 20-metre area for no result, before the class and experience of Farah came to the fore in the 20th minute. With the Bears deep inside the Knights’ 20-metre zone on the back of a penalty set, Farah ran from dummy-half on the last tackle and put in a deft grubber that took a wicked deflection off a Newcastle defender for Tracy to score. Hawkins converted to open up a shock 12-0 Bears lead. After a series of Jack Cogger cross-field kicks were well contained by the Bears cover, the visitors had the next chance to score midway through the half. Farah was held up in goal as he tried to burrow over from dummy-half, and Hawkins dropped the ball short of the goal-line when reaching out to score on the next play. However, the Bears – and Farah – were not to be denied. Eight minutes from half-time, another pinpoint Farah dummy-half grubber kick from from close range evaded the despairing dive of Knights fullback Brent Naden, for Graham to win the race in goal and bag his second try. Hawkins converted to give the Bears an 18-0 advantage. Farah’s kicking game kept turning the Knights around – and off the back of a Tom Hughes spilt bomb three minutes from half-time, a sweeping right side movement through the hands from the ensuing scrum set saw Graham complete a first-half hat-trick in the right corner. Hawkins missed the touch-line conversion, but the Bears took a commanding 22-0 lead to the half-time break. Another perfectly placed Farah kick forced repeat goal-line dropouts five minutes into the second half. From the repeat set, a simple backline movement through the hands saw winger Jacob Gagan crash over in the left corner. Hawkins nailed the touch line conversion and the Bears virtually had the match won at 28-0. The Knights finally got on the board in the 53rd minute when nippy interchange half Tom Starling burst out of dummy-half from his own 30-metre line, running 40 metres to score Newcastle’s first try. After both sides had further chances over the next 17 minutes for no result, Graham dropped a midfield bomb which led to an offside penalty to the Knights with 10 minutes to play. From the ensuing penalty set, Knights prop Jacob Saifiti crashed over from close range to score the last try of the match near the posts. Jack Cogger converted to reduce the final margin to 28-10. The Knights had one last chance to make the score respectable in the closing stages - however their winger Braidon Burns was denied a try due to a forward pass. The Bears then ran down the clock to cruise to their first win of the season.

NSWRL Women's Premiership - Round 3
v Cronulla-Carringbah, Sharks Academy Field, Sat Apr 7 2:00pm
WIN 40-6
Late Changes - Riley, Lamb and Wilon are out. Potter starts hooker. The South Sydney Rabbitohs women’s team have trampled rivals Cronulla-Caringbah Sharks 40-6, continuing their unbeaten start to the season. The Rabbitohs were impeccable right across the park, with or without the ball, with every player putting in 110%. The Red and Green were immediately up for the clash, showing immense physicality to rattle their opposition early on. It was from their quality work off the ball that the Rabbitohs scored their first try. Forcing an error out of the Sharks, Taleena Simon scooped up the lost ball and run 50 metres to score to continue her incredible try streak and put her side out to a 4-0 lead. The Rabbitohs would suffer from ill-discipline, which allowed Cronulla-Caringbah up the field but their goal line defence held up impeccably, forcing another error from the Sharks. The Rabbitohs second try would come off the great work from their forwards. Two big strong runs from the Red and Green forward pack allowed fullback Sharon McGrady to break through a jagged Sharks Line and run 80 metres to score. Halfback Maddie Studdon added the easy two points from in front to stretch the Rabbitohs lead out to 10-0 after 12 minutes. The game quickly turned into a South Sydney masterpiece with back-to-back tries. Five-eighth Lavina O’Mealey burrowed her way over from close range after the Cardinal and Myrtle forced another turnover in Cronulla-Caringbah’s half. Another try followed shortly after with Jasmin Allende running on to a cracking pass from Studdon to score right next to the posts. Studdon easily slotted both conversions to make it 22-0 after just 20 minutes. The game would become a stalemate for the next ten minutes as either side struggled to play out their sets. Cronulla-Caringbah would eventually get their first points on the back of a couple of penalties as Courtney-rae Yasserie crashed over from close range. The try was converted by fullback Tayla Preston, shortening the scoreline down to 22-6 after 30 minutes. However, the Rabbitohs answered immediately with simple and powerful football. The Red and Green stars ran hard and strong at the defence and inevitably burst through, through forward Eunice Grimes, who was simply too strong close to the line, adding another South Sydney try. Studdon would add the extra points but there would be no more in the first half with the Rabbitohs heading to the sheds leading 28-6. The Red and Green stars would start the second half like they did the first with a flurry of strong tackles and would get their first try straight after the restart. O’Mealey would score a carbon copy of her first half try, as she ducked and weaved her way to the line, giving the Rabbitohs a 32-6 lead. The Sharks would come close on a couple of occasions, but time and time again the Red and Green continued to repel them. Off the back of some incredible defence, the Rabbitohs ran through the Sharks line with ease and had their next try just before the hour mark, as winger Karri Doyle crossed over in the corner on the back of a 90-metre set. The game would then become a strong tussle in the middle of the park but it was Souths who would finish off the day as the last try scorers, with Kimbaley Kershaw completing the Rabbitohs women’s 40-6 victory.
