LOSS 20-24
A bulked-up Brisbane has beaten the Rabbitohs with their own power game of yesteryear, with hulking winger/wannabe backrower Corey Oates leading the charge in a thrilling 24-20 win. Oates instigated a second-half blitz of the Bunnies with a power-packed 57th minute try which turned the contest, smashing through four defenders en route to the line. That charge from the 105kg, 192 cm flyer capped a brutal showing from Oates, whose three line breaks, eight tackle busts and 188 metres showed exactly why Wayne Bennett is reluctant to shift such a hard-to-handle customer from his left flank. In-field the story came courtesy of even bigger bodies. Eighteen-year-old, 118kg, 194 cm Payne Haas turned plenty of heads in an eye-catching 21-minute debut that coincided with Brisbane's best football, while Tevita Pangai Jr's 123 metres and 28 tackles took up the gauntlet thrown down by the Burgess twins. The Broncos bruising second-half performance kept a late Souths fightback at bay, while the officials were saved their blushes as John Sutton crossed from a blatantly forward Cody Walker pass to set up a grandstand finish. It all started with Adam Reynolds sending a scare through the Rabbitohs camp by going down early with an ankle issue. But by the seventh minute he was back on his feet with their first points on a platter, thanks to an eye-watering fumble from Jack Bird in his in-goal. Bird butchered a regulation defusal of a Reynolds grubber, only managing to bat it into the path of an obliging Cody Walker for an early 6-0 lead. While the Burgess brothers bulldozed through the middle across the opening stages, Brisbane took the long way round with their first meaningful foray after 18 minutes. It was worth the wait, with Anthony Milford running on the last and five more passes keeping Brisbane alive before Darius Boyd dived on a grubber to get them on the board and complete the 60-metre movement. Immediately though the Rabbitohs hit back with rapid hands of their own sending Alex Johnston over, a Greg Inglis wrap-around play creating more than enough space for his fleet-footed protégé. 12-6 it stayed as the Broncos one raid to come off – a Korbin Sims offload sending Kodi Nikorima to the line – was denied by the bunker, Johnston somehow keeping the ball from hitting the turf. Eight errors brought Brisbane unstuck in the first 40, but three repeat sets to start the second had them level by the 47th minute. The sight of makeshift hooker Josh McGuire limping off with a sprained ankle didn't worry Nikorima, as he scurried between Reynolds and Walker from dummy-half. A penalty goal in quick time put Souths up 14-12 but with Haas and Pangai Jr. throwing several sinks and their sizeable frames at anything in red and green, the tide eventually turned. It was Oates who broke the Bunnies, collecting a Tom Opacic offload and charging 20-metres behind the ruck for the critical four-pointer. At the 62nd minute Brisbane came knocking again, Oates, Haas and Nikorima drilling Richie Kennar back into his in-goal. By the 63rd James Roberts was touching down on another Milford grubber for a 10-point margin. Sutton's try trimmed that back with five minutes remaining, but the Broncos held on while Souths tried every last trick to the final whistle.

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership - Round 8
v Newcastle, North Sydney Oval, Fri Apr 27 7:30pm
WIN 30-10
Late Changes - Kennedy is out. Graham starts wing, Gagan centre, Johnstone prop Williams added to the bench. The North Sydney Bears have kept in touch with the Intrust Super Premiership top eight with a 30-10 win over a disappointing Newcastle Knights side at North Sydney Oval. With former Brydens Lawyers NSW Blues hooker Robbie Farah again playing strongly, the Bears kept the Knights scoreless in the second half – despite Newcastle having a feast of possession and an 8-2 penalty count in their favour in the second stanza. Newcastle started the game well and dominated early possession – culminating in experienced centre Pat Mata'utia opening the scoring in the 13th minute. Mata'utia burst through four Bears defenders from close range following a North Sydney turnover, with Daniel Levi converting to give the visitors a 6-0 lead. Newcastle then returned the favour with a turnover of their own six minutes later, which ended in Bears prop Sam Johnstone crashing over from a short pass from halfback Dean Hawkins. Hawkins added the extras to level scores. Farah soon tried a deft stab kick in behind the Newcastle defence late in the tackle count – only to see Newcastle five-eighth Daniel Peck snaffle the intercept and dash 70 metres to score. Levi missed the conversion, but the Knights led 10-6 – which would be the last time Newcastle led during the game. The Bears made the most of Knights turnovers and ill-discipline in the rest of the first half. Off the back of a penalty, Bears centre Campbell Graham plucked a pin-point Connor Tracey cross kick out of the sky to level scores at 10 points apiece. Things got worse for the Knights when winger Tom Cronan coughed up an error running the ball out of trouble 10 minutes from half-time. North Sydney made the most of the scrum set when Hawkins put second-rower Hymel Hunt into a half gap, before Hunt popped a superb pass for fullback Viliame Kaveinga to score a well-worked try in the corner. Hawkins converted from touch to give the Bears a 16-10 lead. Newcastle were then penalised in the last minute of the first half in front of their own posts for not playing the ball correctly – giving Hawkins a gift penalty goal as the half-time siren sounded and extending the Bears' lead to eight points at the break. Any chance of a Newcastle comeback was dashed when fullback Brent Naden blew a golden opportunity in the visitors' first attack of the second half, when he took the tackle and knocked on with an overlap on his outside. From the scrum, Hawkins sent winger Mawene Hiroti away on an 80-metre dash down the left touch line to score a brilliant counter-attacking try. North Sydney then made sure of the two competition points when a short ball from Farah sent fellow hooker Billy Brittain over next to the uprights. With Hawkins' conversion, it would close out the 30-10 scoreline. Newcastle dominated possession for long periods in the final 20 minutes on the back of the overwhelming second-half penalty count. However, the Bears comfortably defended the indifferent attack the Knights threw at them, and had a try disallowed in the last 10 minutes themselves after Graham was denied due to a forward pass. North Sydney closed out the win comfortably enough for Farah to be given an 'early mark' by Bears coach Shane Millard with five minutes to play.

NSWRL Women's Premiership - Round 6
v Mt Pritchard, Stadium Australia, Thu Apr 26 5:35pm
WIN 26-8
Late Changes - team as per program. The South Sydney Rabbitohs women have become the sole leaders of the Harvey Norman NSW Premiership, toppling rivals the Mount Pritchard Mounties 26-8, at ANZ Stadium. A strong second half from the Red and Green secured the two points as Mounties struggled to contain the damaging Rabbitohs forward back. However, it would be the Mounties who would start the match better and opened the scoring first through halfback Talia Lealaiauloto. Throwing the ball around on the Rabbitohs line, Mounties eventually found the gap to squeeze through, scoring their first points to lead 4-0 after 12 minutes. The Rabbitohs were slow to get into the match sustaining plenty of pressure against a very strong Mounties attack but held firm in defence. The Red and Green would then be rewarded for their steely defence in the 19th minute of the match, as five-eighth Lavina O'Mealey sliced through the Mounties defence to score in the corner. Halfback, Maddie Studdon was unable to add the extra points keeping the sides level at 4-4. The try raised the Rabbitohs confidence and they soon took charge of proceedings. Winger Taleena Simon would give the Rabbitohs great attacking field position after her damaging run won her side a penalty. From there the Rabbitohs took full advantage of the opportunity in the Mounties half as a lovely short ball from Studdon found forward Eunice Grimes who powered her way to the line to score next to the posts. Studdon converted the try to give the Rabbitohs a 10-4 lead. However, the Mounties would fire straight back with a try of their own right on half-time. Lealaiauloto would turn provider this time, as her towering bomb was dropped by Simon. This allowed Mounties winger Monique Donovan to ground the loose ball. The conversion was missed from in front, giving the Rabbitohs a slender 10-8 lead at half-time. Both sides came out in the second half with the same vigour that they started the first but it would be the Rabbitohs who struck first. Running off another Studdon short ball, forward Kim Kershaw bullied her way through the Mounties defence to score, giving the Rabbitohs the perfect start to the second half. From there the Rabbitohs looked unstoppable and were in again shortly after through Simon. Studdon again was at the heart of the play as her cut out ball found her winger Simon on the fly, who then strolled through to score another Rabbitohs four-pointer, giving her side a healthy 20-8 lead with 40 minutes played. The Rabbitohs would continue to motor through the Mounties defence with ease and after working their way up the field, Simon found space up the middle to score her second try. Studdon completed her winger's efforts with another successful conversion to round up another strong win for the Rabbitohs who made it six from six in 2018.
