WIN 42-24

South Sydney flexed their attacking muscle to climb to to top spot in the Telstra Premiership as Robert Jennings bagged four tries in the 42-24 win over Parramatta on Thursday. Although the Rabbitohs share 22 competition points with the Dragons and Panthers, their commanding win gave them a far better points differential. So they will stay kings of the castle for at least 24 hours until Penrith play the Roosters. Souths were superior in so many areas at ANZ Stadium, their victory coming off the back of a magnificent night's work to winger Jennings, who spoiled his brother Michael's 250th NRL game, and a brace to fullback Alex Johnston. Halves Adam Reynolds and Cody Walker were also on song as the Bunnies piled on seven tries in the space of 33 minutes after trailing 14-6. The four-try haul by Jennings had many scurrying for the record books only to find that eight Souths players have scored five tries in the one game – the most recent was Johnston against Penrith in round 17 last year. In truth the winning margin would have been inflated further if Reynolds had as much success with his goalkicking [four from eight] as he had with his attacking plays. The Rabbitohs have now slammed seven straight wins in the middle of the season for the first time since 1994. Things were going so well, skipper Greg Inglis was rested with 10 minutes left to play. The Eels were in touch at halftime, trailing by just two, 16-14. But five tries in the second half consigned Brad Arthur's men to a 12th defeat for the year and erased the spark that emerged from the 20-14 win over the Cowboys last weekend. Jarryd Hayne scored a consolation try in the 67th minute and Josh Hoffman another in the 74th but fans had begun heading to the exits before then. The lead changed four times in the opening 40 minutes as the Jennings show unfolded. Proceedings started in the best possible way for Parramatta with a try to Hoffman off a Corey Norman kick in just the third minute, helped by a fumble from Souths winger Hymel Hunt. But then disaster struck with a mix-up between Hoffman and Manu Ma'u from the kickoff, resulting in a scrum for South Sydney 10 metres out. Robert Jennings got his scoring started with a try in the left corner to put Souths up 6-4. Six minutes later and Eels winger George Jennings scored in the right corner for the home side to take back the lead 8-6. The gap was extended when Bevan French supported a Peni Terepo run to the line. Then Robert Jennings scored his second, followed by Alex Johnston, and the Rabbitohs were back in front 16-14. From there it was a procession and Robert Jennings scored another two tries in the second half to give him 12 from 13 games.

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership - Round 15

v Western Suburbs, Campbelltown, Sun Jun 17 11:55am

LOSS 10-12

Late Changes - Williams and Freebairn are out. Nicholls starts at prop, Johnstone and Ilett on the bench Western Suburbs Magpies Intrust Super Premiership side have made it back-to-back wins with a hard-fought 12-10 victory over North Sydney today at Campbelltown. Young gun Jacob Liddle got the scoring going early and produced a dominant 80-minute performance in the middle of the field, while stand-in half Bayley Sironen was equally impressive as Brett Hodgson's side consolidated third spot on the ladder heading in to next week's standalone Representative Round. Leading 12-10 at the break, it was a tough second half for Western Suburbs running in to a stiff breeze at Campbelltown but the home side showcased once more the defensive resolve that has hallmarked the season so far to hold firm and emerge with the crucial two points on offer this afternoon. Playing just his second game in a row as he continues to work back from off-season shoulder surgery, Liddle picked apart the Bears ruck after just 10 minutes to give Wests an early advantage before the visitors struck back with a well-worked left edge move that saw Curtis Johnston dive over out wide. Mawene Hiroti showed just how difficult kicking in to the wind would be with his sideline attempt travelling just five metres before landing in the turf, leaving the Magpies with a slender two-point lead. After sharp work from Chris McQueen on last tackle earned the home side a repeat set and the chance to build some sustained pressure on the Bears line, it was Harry O'Toole who crossed for the hosts second try of the day — largely thanks to a magical cut-out pass from Sironen that beat several defenders out wide. Tuimoala Lolohea ensured his good start with the boot would continue as he slotted his conversion attempt from out wide to give the Magpies a 12-4 lead after 25 minutes of play. It wouldn't take long for the Bears to hit back, however, as Wests continued to be victims of their ill-discipline in defence; back-to-back penalties allowing the visitors to attack relentlessly before Billy Brittain crashed over from dummy half. Hiroti had better success with his conversion this time around, cutting the lead to just two points once more as the two sides entered the half-time break at Campbelltown. North Sydney began the second half the way they finished the first, and looked likely to take the lead for the first time in the game but a sustained period of attack on the Magpies line saw them come up empty. With Sironen off the field to a concussion, the onus was on Lolohea to stand up in attack and the fullback was incredibly unlucky not to seal the game for Western Suburbs with two clever kicks close to the line — both times finding the man in space but Braden Robson and Pita Godinet both couldn't quite collect. Godinet looked to have sealed the win when he put O'Toole over with five minutes to go, only for the try to be waved by the officials with a controversial forward pass. In the end, though, it would matter not as the home side held on with a well-controlled final few minutes to emerge with a gutsy two-point win.
