Late Changes
Graham has pulled out with hand injury and Turner were trimmed 24h before the match. Brittain and Britt were 18th and 19th men.
LOSS 14-18
Alex Johnston went off the field after only a few minutes with a hamstring injury. Fuimaono moved to right centre and Gagai back to fullback. Star recruit Cooper Cronk has guided pre-season premiership favourites Sydney Roosters to the top of the NRL ladder for the first time after defeating South Sydney 18-14 in a gripping heavyweight contest between the game's oldest clubs on Friday night. After snaring Cronk and NSW fullback James Tedesco during the summer, the Roosters were widely tipped to win their first grand final since 2013 but it has been a steady climb up the Telstra Premiership ladder rather than the season of dominance many had predicted. However, with just three rounds remaining before the playoffs, the Bondi-based club is on track for a top-two finish and a home final after overcoming a lack of possession to down their arch rivals and the previous competition leaders for the 100th time before a crowd of 26,311 at ANZ Stadium. It was a win built on defence after the Roosters were forced to make 362 tackles to 311 by Souths and finished the match with just 45 per cent possession following their failure to complete 11 of 37 sets with the ball. The Roosters, who had to survive the last 12 minutes without Tedesco after he was forced from the field for a concussion test, missed just 25 tackles compared to 37 by the Rabbitohs, while Cronk controlled the match with his astute kicking game. The former Test halfback, who won four grand finals with Melbourne, gained 485 metres from 14 kicks in general play, forced a goal line drop out and created a try scoring opportunity for winger Blake Ferguson with a perfectly weighed cross-field kick but he lost control of the ball ground it. He also tackled Cody Walker into touch just before the Roosters try line after chasing in cover defence when Rabbitohs winger Braidon Burns toed a loose ball ahead seven minutes before fulltime. Souths were hampered by the loss of fullback Alex Johnston with a hamstring injury in just the third minute of the match, causing a reshuffle in which backrower Tyrell Fuimaino was forced to play right centre opposite the in-form Latrell Mitchell. The Rabbitohs forwards were able to get their team in the attacking zone, with every starting member of the pack except hooker Damien Cook carrying the ball for more than 100 metres, headed by prop Tom Burgess, who ran 227 metres. However, Souths had trouble executing and the kicking game of halfback Adam Reynolds was below par, while the Roosters defended aggressively near their own tryline, with hooker Jake Friend making a game high 58 tackles and four other forwards making more than 30 tackles each. The match was evenly poised at half-time, with the Roosters leading 10-8 after overcoming a dramatic start in which Souths regathered possession from a Siosiua Taukeiaho knock-on at the kick-off and spent most of the opening 10 minutes camped down their end. Reynolds posted first points of the match for the Rabbitohs with a third-minute goal after back-to-back penalties but the home team suffered a massive blow when Johnston limped from the field with a hamstring injury. A Blake Ferguson fumble from a Reynolds bomb gave Souths more field position but they were unable to capitalise and the Roosters made them pay when they finally got down the other end of the field. After forcing a repeat set, the Roosters' opening try of the match involved a brilliant act of sleight of hand by back-rower Victor Radley, who performed a hit and spin on Tom Burgess before getting a pass to Tedesco on the Rabbitohs line that even referee Gerard Sutton didn't see. Despite dominating early, Souths trailed 6-2 after the first 16 minutes and Burgess joined Johnston on the sideline after being forced off for an HIA while Reynolds was physically sick as Latrell Mitchell lined up the conversion. A 24th-minute penalty goal by Mitchell extended the Roosters' lead but Reynolds drew level for Souths when he dived on his own grubber kick to score after the ball had ricocheted off the foot of Isaac Liu into the chest of the Rabbitohs halfback. Another Mitchell penalty goal in the 37th minute put the Roosters ahead at the interval. A spectacular try to centre Joseph Manu 13 minutes into the second half gave them the ascendency after Boyd Cordner blocked another Reynolds grubber on his own line and the ball bounced forward. Cordner regathered but the play appeared to break down when he passed the ball into Mitchell's knee. However, winger Blake Ferguson raced out of dummy half and ran to the opposite side of the field to link with Manu, who accelerated into space and dived into the corner to score. Another Mitchell penalty goal put the Roosters ahead 18-8 in the 57th minute but Souths centre Hymel Hunt ensured the game remained in the balance until the final play when he scored seven minutes later after a behind the back pass by Braidon Burns.

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership - Round 22
v Wentworthville, North Sydney Oval, Sun Aug 12 2:00pm
LOSS 30-36
Late Changes - Hiroti, Britt, Brittain were out, Tago starts centre, Kennedy prop, McIlwrick hooker, Bailey second row, Johnstone and Am.Vaematahau on the bench. The Wentworthville Magpies have put the North Sydney Bears’ season on life support after handing them a 36-30 defeat at North Sydney Oval. North Sydney nearly completed the most incredible of comebacks with five tries in the last 20 minutes, but Wentworthville managed to cling on. Strengthened by the additions of Parramatta NRL-regulars Bevan French and Josh Hoffman – who both scored tries – the Magpies ran in four unanswered four-pointers during the opening 30 minutes to set up the win. The loss will sting more than usual for the Bears who could have moved to eighth with a win. While the Bears had everything at stake, it was the Magpies who landed the first blow through French in the ninth minute. The lightning-fast fullback found a slight gap from close range and flashed through it to register four points. Nathan Davis converted, giving Wentworthville a 6-0 lead. Magpies lock Raymond Stone extended the margin six minutes later. Having been awarded a penalty around 11 metres out from North Sydney’s goal-line, Stone took a cunning quick-tap and barged over. Davis added the extras to push the score out to 12-0. With the game slipping away, the Bears looked towards their star playmaker Connor Tracey to produce something special – and that he did. Tracey made a scintillating clean break from within North Sydney’s end, but his attempted pass to a support player went awry and a try-scoring chance was missed. Instead of reducing the gap to six, the Bears found themselves down by 18 when Wentworthville hooker Rhys Davies burrowed across the chalk. Davis again kicked the goal. Soon the difference was four converted tries, as Hoffman dotted down after backing up a Magpies bust. In the shadows of half-time, the Bears posted a try via winger Sean Sabutey in the right corner, giving themselves a flicker of hope. Halfback Dean Hawkins nailed the goal kick from the sideline. But any visions of a grand Bears fightback seemed improbable when Abbas Miski drove his way in for Wentworthville’s fifth converted try in the 52nd minute. Wentworthville’s Davis then boosted his personal points tally to 16 by scoring a break-away try to complement his six goals. The score was 36-6 at that point. Against the odds, North Sydney began a late charge on the back of a four-pointer from fullback Jesse Arthars, then added another to Tracey following the sin-binning of the Magpies’ Davies. Tracey collected a second try off a kick moments later – his third double in as many weeks – as the Bears gathered steam. They piled on a fifth try to Sean Sabutey in the 74th minute. Arthars scored his second off a scrum move in the dying stages and suddenly everything North Sydney touched turned to gold. But they ran out of time in the end, with goal-kicking proving to be the difference.

NSWRL Women's Premiership - Grand Final
(2v1) v Mt Pritchard, Stadium Australia, Fri Aug 10 5:30pm
LOSS 10-12
Late Changes - Grimes and Ianeta Baker dropped off the bench. Mounties have claimed the 2018 Harvey Norman NSW Women's Premiership, edging South Sydney Rabbitohs 12-10 at ANZ Stadium in the competition's grand final. Minor premiers at the end of the regular season, the Rabbitohs fell in a tight contest – Mounties backing up their Finals Week Two win over South Sydney in a near-identical fashion. In a high-quality match from near go-to-woe, the early exchanges were error-filled as nerves took over both sides. But finding their rhythm on the back of it was the Rabbitohs first to settle and to strike on the scoreboard. A brave right-to-left shift – just 10 metres from their own goal-line – had Taleena Simon into space, and the fleet-of-foot winger did the rest to score. Simon turned on the speed and left would-be trailers in her wake, improving her position to ensure an easier shot on goal for halfback Maddie Studdon. The Rabbitohs No.7 made no mistake from near in front of the uprights to see the Rabbitohs to a 6-0 front. The South Sydney lead was short-lived though, as Mounties turned to their NSW Origin star Simaima Taufa to get them back into the contest. And as she did in Week Two of the finals series, Taufa burrowed her way between defenders and over the line to see her side back into the match. Janelle Williams converted to level the scores at 6-6. In a tit-for-tat opening 15 minutes, again the Rabbitohs hit the front and did so courtesy of Sharon McGrady. Deep on the attack, South Sydney looked likely to roll a grubbing kick into the in-goal area, but caught the Mounties defence unawares with a backline shift on the last play of the set. McGrady finished the play off to score, however Studdon couldn't add the extras from out wide as the score remained 10-6. As time ticked away towards half-time, Mounties found a reprieve when a 'knock-on' call against the Rabbitohs fell in their favour. As Taufa attracted numbers to the middle-third of the field, Patricia Raikadroka caught the South Sydney defence short as she cut back in against the grain. The light-stepping centre found her way over the line to take the score to 10-10 – and that's the way it would remain at the break as Williams sprayed the ensuing shot on goal. In a second period where both sides had long spells of possession, 25 minutes had passed before the first points of the half were registered. In a near-identical play to one that proved decisive a fortnight previously, Woodman jumped out of dummy-half to catch the markers not square. The referee's whistle signalled a penalty, and Williams obliged to see Mounties to the 12-10 lead. The penalty kick the difference in the end, as Mounties hung on to register their maiden Harvey Norman NSW Women's Premiership title.
