WIN 14-6
South Sydney maintained their top-four position on the NRL ladder but without making any real message of intent in their 14-6 win over the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium on Friday. It was the Rabbitohs’ fifth win of the season but it’s fair to say it was their least convincing. It was by no means as slick as the five-try demolition of the Warriors at the Sunshine Coast a week ago. The grinding nature of this annual Good Friday tussle was evidenced by the fact no points were scored in the second half. It was the first scoreless second half since the Bulldogs-Storm game in round one of 2017. With such limited opportunities on offer to post points, when Bulldogs winger Jayden Okunbor and then centre Kerrod Holland were dragged over the eastern sideline close to the corner post early in the second half, the fans threw their hands in the air. Then Corey Harawira-Naera missed the bounce off a deft Lachlan Lewis kick, with the Rabbitohs line open. Coach Dean Pay put his head in his hands. And why not. By halftime the home side had made 60 more tackles. By full-time it was only 43 more but the Bulldogs had missed 45. They defended their hearts out for most of the game but that can’t be the only element to the Bulldogs game, and even that needs more attention. Their handling errors may have only tallied 11, but it was nearly double the Rabbitohs and so were the penalties (12-8 against the Bulldogs). To be fair, the Bulldogs lost fullback Nick Meaney for the majority of the second half with a severe laceration to his finger. Will Hopoate went to the back and Corey Harawira-Naera, who had passed an HIA test during the break, went to right centre. But Pay’s team needs to provide far more in attack. Same goes for Souths on Friday’s display. Coach Wayne Bennett will have to find out why the flame seems to have gone out in the Rabbitohs. Often during the match Souths players were standing still and passing the ball around like it was a training drill. The Bulldogs were counting their lucky stars that they were only eight points down at halftime. Souths were hanging on to a 67 per cent possession rate, had six more sets with the ball, and had given away less penalties. Both sides had a try disallowed in the opening 40 – Holland in the 10th minute when he pushed Dane Gagai in the back to get to the ball, and Liam Knight’s obstruction in the 40th minute robbing Corey Allen. The points came early. Campbell Graham slid over for his sixth try in six games in just the third minute. Then bullocking Ofahiki Ogden ran over the top of Damien Cook to score next to the posts in the 13th. From then the match descended into your classic Good Friday arm wrestle, highlighted by Sam Burgess’ continual exchanges – both verbal and physical - with young Dogs halfback Lachlan Lewis.

Reserve Grade - Canterbury NSW Premiership Round 6
v Canterbury, Belmore Sports Ground, Sat Apr 20 3:15pm
WIN 36-6
Late Changes - Britt, Ta'avale were out. Peoples started second row and Hills was added to the bench. Despite battling through injury, the South Sydney Rabbitohs Canterbury Cup side have dismantled the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 36-6 in their Round 6 clash at Belmore Sports Ground. Forwards Tom Amone and Keaon Koloamatangi laid the foundation for the side, with halfback Dean Hawkins putting in a kicking masterclass and hooker Billy Brittain terrorising the opposition with his running. After a scrappy start from both sides, it was the Rabbitohs who laid on the first points with Billy Brittain sending Connor Tracey under the black dot to score. Mawene Hiroti's goal saw the Rabbitohs up 6-nil just after ten minutes of play. But as the match wore on, it was their opponents who gained ascendency with their kicking, forcing back-to-back dropouts and putting pressure on the Red and Green. Despite a leg injury seeing Kennedy head to the sheds and a hit on Tracey forcing him to undergo a HIA assessment, it was the Rabbitohs who struck the next blow, with super-sub Jack Johns breaking through and linking with fullback Leigh Higgins, who scoring a near-identical try. The custodian swerved through defenders to score, and with a fifth-tackle penalty gifting the Rabbitohs a further two points soon after, it was the Red and Green who led 14-nil after half an hour. Five-eighth Dean Hawkins kicking game terrorised the Bulldogs, as a last-tackle bounce saw their opponents hand over possession, with the five-eighth then sending over second rower Keaon Koloamatangi to crash over for his second Canterbury Cup try. The following conversion then saw the Rabbitohs with a 20-nil halftime lead. Despite Tracey's successful return to the field, it was the Bulldogs who crossed first after a seven-tackle set and a penalty handed over easy possession. But the Rabbitohs were quick to turn around, with strong kick returns from Hiroti and Higgins putting the side back on the front foot, with the side soon going over again only for the ball to go to ground. With the weight of possession, the Bulldogs continued to place pressure through offloads and forcing a drop-out in the second half, but the Red and Green brick wall refused to let up, with great kick-pressure forcing a seven-tackle set. While the Bulldogs were filled with errors through frantic play, the composure of the Rabbitohs shone through and soon it was Lyndon Hills crashed over to bring the side's lead back to twenty with a quarter of the match left. An immediate penalty from the kick-off, the Rabbitohs continued to roll downfield and see the side nearly strike again only for the final pass to Hiroti to be called forward. But the Red and Green more than made up for their mistakes, forcing a number of errors from the Bulldogs in defence with some strong one-on-one defence giving their opponents little chance of scoring. And thanks to that defensive persistence, the side scored two quick-fire tries thanks to some clever play from Billy Brittain in the final ten minutes to record a dominant 36-6 victory.

U20 NSW Jersey Flegg Cup - Round 5
v Canterbury, Stadium Australia, Fri Apr 19 2:00pm
WIN 22-6
Late Changes - Frasca dropped off the bench. The South Sydney Rabbitohs Jersey Flegg side have made a statement by recording a 22-6 victory against the third-placed Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs on Good Friday. Continuing from their win against the Warriors, it was another strong start for the Red and Green, with a penalty and an error giving them prime territory to land the first blow. A quick play the ball then saw halfback Blake Taaffe putting Volkan Er over for the first try of the match with a well-timed pass. An error from the kick-off gave their opponents a chance to hit back, but strong defence and great communication between the outside backs saw a grubber kick recovered with ease. More ill-discipline from the Bulldogs continued to hand over territory for the Rabbitohs, who displayed slick attacking skills with offloads, quick play the balls and kick pressure continuing to put their opponents on the back-foot. Fullback James Tautaiolefua continued his strong form after scoring a double last week, taking a kick from the in-goal to get himself out to the field of play in a match-defining play. Although the Bulldogs continued to probe in attack, it was the Rabbitohs who displayed strong goal-line defence, continuing to hold off their opponents with every touch of the ball. A half-break from five-eighth Marc Zaurrini allowed Tautaiolefua to burst through on the next set, and with the Bulldogs making an error from a kick, it was another chance for the Cardinal and Myrtle to strike. But an error from the next set alleviated all the pressure for their opponents, and despite more ball-playing sending centre Tallis Angianga through the line, the Rabbitohs failed to capitalise on their field position. A strong tackle from Nic Mougios and Kane Allan prevented the Bulldogs from scoring with a desperate tackle to hold the ball up, with the scores remaining at the break. However, it was the Bulldogs who came out firing in the second half, with a linebreak on the resumption setting them up in the Rabbitohs half, with a ricochet from a kick putting them over to score and the conversion giving them the lead for the first time in the match. A penalty on halfway gave their opponents further ammunition, but not to be deterred, the Red and Green held off another attacking raid. But the Bulldogs continued to gain the ascendency, with a fifth-tackle kick being knocked on from Er, but despite ill-discipline continuing to cruel the side, the Red and Green continued to grow as the match wore on. With the Rabbitohs on the attack, more chances came as Nic Mougios was held up over the line, and with a deft kick forcing a drop-out, the Red and Green were over soon after again as Brock Gardner crashed over from the tap. And the momentum continued as the kick-off went out on the full, giving the side a perfect chance to go back-to-back, with debutant Peter Mamouzelos going over with a trademark run from dummy-half. Another great kick saw the Bulldogs kick a drop-out, and after a penalty in front of the sticks, the side went for goal to give them a 12-point lead with seven left on the clock. A match-sealing try went begging as Augustine Stowers crashed over only for the ball to go to ground, but fleet-footed winger Kane Allan managed to streak away to seal the deal for the Red and Green.
