WIN 32-16
South Sydney’s best start to a season since 1989 has come at a hefty price with star halfback and NSW Origin hopeful Adam Reynolds the latest busted Bunny in a 32-16 win over Wests Tigers. The Rabbitohs 10-1 record leaves them sitting atop the NRL ladder with a winning run that matches their march to the minor premiership 30 years ago. But they now stare down a daunting rep period where they will be without up to four Origin stars and potentially Reynolds, who hobbled from the field with what was feared to be a possible fractured fibula as the Tigers were put to bed. The 28-year-old will be sent for scans on Sunday. Already unable to name a full 21-man Rabbitohs squad for this match due to a bulging casualty ward featuring Alex Johnston, Braidon Burns, Kyle Turner, Adam Doueihi, and the retired Greg Inglis, Reynolds untimely sidelining came with he and Cody Walker making one last bid for a NSW Origin call-up. Blues coach Brad Fittler will instead be scouring the phone book for fit play makers at this rate, but it started superbly for Reynolds and his fellow sky blue hopefuls. After 10 minutes of chess movements and a Reynolds penalty goal, Cameron Murray did his chances of an Origin debut no harm, Damien Cook piloting the 21-year-old over from short range for a telling opening salvo. Reynolds himself went even better two minutes later - the diminutive No. 7 dummying past Ben Matulino and scurrying 20 metres for a 14-0 Rabbitohs lead. Standing in for injured fullback Moses Mbye, Corey Thompson led a genuine Tigers fightback with gusto. They had to wait 22 minutes for their crack at Souths line, but Thompson made the most of it by scything onto a no-look inside ball from Benji Marshall to bust the Bunnies open. Ten minutes on and Luke Brooks was launching a cross-field kick, with Esan 'Nike' Marsters producing a reasonable Air Jordan leap and overhead grab. Marsters’ four-pointer and follow-up conversion reduced the Tigers deficit to just two. All eyes were then on Reynolds as the pint-sized play maker was caught awkwardly in a tackle on Thompson, the Souths star at first attempting to play on before finishing the night on crutches. Tries either side of halftime to Cook – who started a Rabbitohs raid with a surge from dummy half before swooping on a loose pass to finish it too – and Liam Knight put the Rabbitohs out to a comfortable 26-12 margin. More Marshall magic again trimmed it back. Belying the 34 years in his legs, Marshall put them into temporary orbit with a hop and skip that put him on the outside of makeshift Rabbitohs centre Ethan Lowe, Marshall eventually crossing for his first try of the season. With Souths in cruise control the Tigers threatened throughout the second half, only for untimely mistakes and penalties to kill their momentum. A second try to Murray in the 67th minute sealed it for the Rabbitohs, despite the on-field officials referring his touchdown of a Cook grubber as no-try with several Souths chasers appearing to be offside as the ball bounced off the posts. Regardless, Murray’s two tries, 43 tackles and 143 running metres should be enough to secure him a spot on the NSW bench, while Cook is in ominous touch after setting up two tries and scoring another himself. Walker’s chances of a Blues halves debut have likely dived with Reynolds’ injury all but ruling out a Rabbitohs club combo at the NSW scrumbase, though he could still be in mind for a bench utility role.

Reserve Grade - Canterbury NSW Premiership Round 10
v Western Suburbs, Redfern Oval, Sun May 26 1:10pm
LOSS 18-30
Late Changes - Hills, O'Brien, Mougios and Chan-Foon dropped off the bench. A South Sydney side depleted by first-grade call ups has been defeated by the Wests Magpies on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at the Metricon High Performance Centre at Redfern Oval in the first leg of the Kelly-Sattler Cup. It was an error-riddled performance from Souths, with ill-discipline featuring prominently, with the side ultimately unable to take advantage of their many opportunities, going down 30 points to 18. The Rabbitohs drew first blood in the 5th minute, however, with Dean Hawkins sending back-rower Jack Johns through a yawning gap with a beautiful short ball. Johns still had plenty of work to do off the back the Hawkins pass, and beat Wests fullback Watson Heleta with a beautiful right foot step to score under the posts. The Magpies would hit back quickly in the 11th minute through right winger Harrison O’Toole who crashed over in the corner, followed by another try eight minutes later to halfback Kauri Aupouri-Puketapu for a 12-6 lead. Luke Garner would then add to the Rabbitohs’ woes, barging over on the left edge after some enterprising play by Aupouri-Puketapu and hooker Braden Robson in the middle left the Souths’ defence stretched on the edge. However, the Rabbitohs would manage to hit back just four minutes from half-time through five-eighth Bayley Sironen. His halves partner Dean Hawkins converted, leaving the halftime scores at 18-12. The Magpies began the second half with a bang, scoring in the 42nd minute through Mahe Fonua who crashed over. A Bilal Maarbani break on the left put the South Sydney defence on the back foot, with Fonua scoring on the right just two plays later, pushing his case for a return to first grade and pushing the lead out to 22-12. Things went from bad to worse for the Rabbitohs with the ensuing kick-off going out on the full. However, they were able to keep the Magpies out with some gutsy goal-line defence, pushing O’Toole into touch on the last tackle. A Wests fumble on halfway gifted the Rabbitohs a chance to attack as they set up camp on the Magpies’ line for three sets. They took full advantage of the opportunity, spreading the ball through the hands all the way to the right wing for Leigh Higgins to score in the corner. Dean Hawkins converted, getting his side within four points of the Magpies. Wests extended their lead to ten points in the 61st minute through a typical front-rower’s try to Joseph Ratuvakacereivalu, who carried three defenders with him over the line as he grounded the ball under the posts. A string of errors and penalties from Souths saw Wests dominate possession for the remainder of the game. A penalty for accidental offside in front of the posts gave Wests a 12-point lead in the 70th minute, and that’s how the scores would remain, with Souths left to lick their wounds as the Magpies swooped on a big victory.
