LOSS 16-26

The brilliance of Storm five-eighth Cameron Munster silenced a vocal South Sydney crowd at Central Coast Stadium as Melbourne emerged victors 26-16 in their top-four clash on Sunday. Souths lost Braidon Burns (hamstring) and Sam Burgess (quad) to match-eve withdrawals with coach Wayne Bennett making an eventual seven changes to the 17 named on Tuesday. Bellamy's men piled on 12 points in as many minutes, through tries to Jesse Bromwich and Justin Olam off the back of four line-breaks. Souths finally got across the try line in the 25th minute after a glut of possession. A penalty goal to Adam Reynolds then made it 12-6 and South Sydney were back within striking distance. The tension in the match rose a little when Storm winger Suliasi Vunivalu leapt too early for a Cameron Munster kick and interfered with a couple of Souths players in the contest. Felise Kaufusi cleaned up the scraps but was denied by the Bunker thanks to Vunivalu's involvement. The home side were able to exploit Felise Kaufusi's sin-binning for knocking into Cody Walker as he chased a kick to the in-goal early in the second half. The Rabbitohs scored off the next set with Graham crossing for his second. The Reynolds conversion from the left sideline levelled the scores at 12-all. Nelson Asofa-Solomona was denied by some desperate Souths defence and the Bunker in the 59th minute but there was no stopping Munster two minutes later as his huge left foot step put Melbourne up 18-12. A long-range break from the Storm forced a scrambling defensive line into an offside play and earned a free shot at two points. Another superb Walker pass handed Graham his hat-trick and set up the grandstand finish before Munster's kick for Croft to score sealed the win. Then with South Sydney edging back to within four points at 20-16, Munster caught the ball on the burst and kicked it forward in one movement, with his halves partner Brodie Croft leaping high in support to ground the bouncing ball. A hat-trick to Rabbitohs winger Campbell Graham was not enough to dent the Storm's charge.

Reserve Grade - Canterbury NSW Premiership Round 20

v Warriors, 1:50pm

WIN 32-30

Late Changes - Corey Allan, Britt and Dillon are out. Higgins starts fullback, Nakubuwai on the wing, Gray at prop, Johns at second row with O'Connor and O'Brien coming onto the bench. The South Sydney Rabbitohs Canterbury Cup side have claimed a tense 32-30 victory against the New Zealand Warriors in their Round 21 clash at Central Coast Stadium. Backrower Jaydn Su'A was instrumental in the victory, setting up two tries in the second half while front rower Tom Amone scored a decisive double. A number of changes were made before kick-off, with Leigh Higgins filling in at fullback with Corey Allan promoted to the first-grade side, and winger and Pio Nakubuwai making his first appearance for the Red and Green. It was a rusty start for the Rabbitohs, with a number of wayward kicks giving their opponents early possession with a touch from the Rabbitohs 20 out from the line, followed by a penalty, setting the Warriors up to score the first try of the match through Sam Lisone. But a kick out on the full from the Warriors gave the Rabbitohs some breathing room, and after a penalty in the ruck soon after saw them within striking distance, big prop Tom Amone brushed past defenders with ease to score. Mawene Hiroti's missed conversion saw the side trail by two after ten minutes. The try then gave the Rabbitohs a shot of confidence, stretching out the Warriors' defence with some slick passing, before holding out their attacking raids in a strong defensive set. But it was ill-discipline that cost the side with a penalty giving the Warriors a chance to double their lead in a similar try to Josh Curran. But the Rabbitohs were quick to hit back as Connor Tracey sliced through the line to score next to the posts. A number of offloads from Jacob Gagan and Mawene Hiroti on the left saw the side make their way downfield, with a number of Tracey grubbers keeping the Warriors at bay. After a ten minute period where neither side could gain ascendency, the Rabbitohs took the lead for the first time with a try out of the blue to Higgins, who scored a long-range effort to touch down in the corner. And the Rabbitohs were truly back in the swing of things as Tracey intercepted a kick to streak 60 metres downfield, with a punt seeing his halves partner Blake Taaffe go downfield only to be tackled before the line. With the Warriors holding on too long, a decisive penalty just before the break saw Lewis Soosemea sin binned, with Hiroti opting for goal on the stroke of halftime for a 16-12 lead. The Red and Green continued their dominance early in the second half, forcing a dropout and looking likely to get a second before the sides came together in disagreement, with the Warriors given a seven-tackle set. Ill-discipline would cruel the Rabbitohs, who failed to take advantage of the one-man advantage as the Warriors wound the clock down with Taane Milne kicking a penalty goal to close the gap to two points. After a restricted first ten minutes after the break, the Rabbitohs finally got into gear as Levi Dodd crossed on a fifth tackle play courtesy of Jaydn Su'A. Su'A would then set up his second try of the match, making a break to put Blake Taaffe close to the line, before the backrower flicked the ball to new Rabbitoh Pio Nakubuwai to score in the corner. But the Warriors weren't done yet, with fullback Paul Turner breaking the line to streak away, and a try just after saw the chance to level before the conversion was missed. Despite the Warriors having the ball in hand, a penalty to the Rabbitohs in the ruck on halfway opened another chance to score, with Tom Amone bagging his double in a barnstorming effort. Their opponents failed to lay down, however, with a try less than five minutes left seeing them down by two points. With a drop-out and just over a minute to go, the Rabbitohs were on the backfoot, a tackle from Hiroti on the last play forced an error from the Warriors and keeping the side on the top of the Canterbury Cup ladder.

U20 NSW Jersey Flegg Cup - Round 17

v Victoria Thunderbolts, 12:05pm

WIN 64-6

Late Changes - Stowers is out. Mundine has come on the bench. The South Sydney Rabbitohs Jersey Flegg side have come away with a dominant 64-6 victory against the Victoria Thunderbolts in their Round 21 clash at Central Coast Stadium. Backrower Tallis Angianga scored three tries, while his fellow forward Matt French scoring a double in a strong performance as the Rabbitohs hit the half-century in a one-sided contest. A strong start to the match saw the Rabbitohs gain ample field position with strong defence keeping the Thunderbolts in their own half, and after just a few minutes it was bustling backrower Tallis Angianga who broke the line to score the first try of the match. With Lachlan Ilias' conversion, it was the Rabbitohs who were up 6-nil after just five minutes. An error in the play the ball coupled with a penalty saw the Thunderbolts stake their claim to rebound and score, but it was the Red and Green touching down at the other end of the field as fullback James Tautaiolefua barged over the line. Another lost ball in the ruck coupled with a penalty this time saw Victoria go over to score to close the ledger with five-eighth Trent Toelau slipping through to score. A light drizzle soon came down, and with a Thunderbolts error the Red and Green were back on the attack with backrower Matt French running a well-timed line off Ilias to hit back. The roll-on continued as the Rabbitohs fast-paced attack dominated, with French getting his second as he ran off another inside man - this time prop Aiden Manowski - to build an eighteen-point lead. It was the perfect execution of the spine to see the Rabbitohs gain their next try, with hooker Peter Mamouzelos and Lachlan Ilias sending Tautaiolefua through a gap with an inside-out move at the ruck. On the next play, it was halfback Dean Hawkins who grubbered through for Angianga, who chased through to put the ball down just before the dead-ball line. A late break on the stroke of fulltime saw Ilias nearly touch down only to be denied with a knock-on over the line, but the Rabbitohs held an impressive 30-6 halftime lead. The Thunderbolts came out of the sheds with plenty of intent, but another error saw French race downfield, before Angianga bagged his hat-trick on the next set. Ilias' sixth consecutive conversion saw the Rabbitohs lead by 30 points. Soon after it was centre Nic Mougios and Dean Hawkins touching down, with the Red and Green well and truly dominating their opponents. A linebreak from French just after the kick-off saw winger Muong Dut score the side's ninth try to hit the half-century with twenty minutes left. Hawkins was the next to bag his double in a brilliant solo try, dummying his way to the line in a 30-metre effort continued to side's lead, with a final try seeing the scores 64-6.
