LOSS 8-17
South Sydney with the rest of the NRL clubs returned to the 9s format after a 3 year absence. Day one was a typical hot Perth summer day. South Sydney were fielding a number of new faces, led by new captain Damien Cook, from the successfull Canterbury Cup and Jersey Flegg teams from last year. In the first set of six Taaffe almost kicked the perfect kick before the ball just rolled dead. The Tigers took the advantage and put first points on the board. It wasn't long before they were in again. South Sydney looked rusty in their first hitout and after another couple of errors they scored their third try just before halftime to lead 17-0 at the break. As both teaam changes came thick and fast, but it was South Sydney who started out better in the second half. Then it was Wests Tigers turn make a number of errors before Graham crashed over. Lowe injured his knee in a tackle and took no further part in the tournament. With the U20s spine of Josh Cook, Taaffe and Ilias now at the helm South Sydney were giving the Tigers trouble. From a rare 5-man scrum, South Sydney spun the ball out wide with Gebbie scoring his debut try, to the delight of fans in Papua New Guinea. Damien Cook had a poor kickoff as the ball sailed out on the full, with the game ending soon after with the Tigers winning 17-8.

For the second round match Koloamantangi, Tatola, Lowe were out. J.Cook, Gebbie, Mago started. Graham, Paulo and Johns on the bench.
WIN 29-8
South Sydney went into this game knowing they needed to win by 26 or win well and wait on the following Titans-Tigers match result to qualify for the finals. Day two was a mild summer day in Perth. Mago was making his debut in South Sydney colours and added some size to the South Sydney pack. But the game did not get off to the start Souths wanted, with two errors giving Canberra opportunities which they scored both times from out wide to take a early 8 nil lead. The following set Souths received 2 penalties which put them in good field position before Josh Cook took control and scurried out from dummy half to score a bonus point try. A short kickoff saw Souths regain possession and a clever combination from U20s grand final halves saw Ilias kick in behind the line for Taaffe to score next to posts giving South Sydney an unexpected 13-8 lead at halftime. The second half openned in the same manner another short kicoff and South Sydney regained possession of a Cnberra error, before Ilias cut through and scored near the posts. Another successful short kickoff and World 9s play Campbell Graham scored his second try of the tournament. Canberra started to get back into the game but a intercept by Dane Gagai saw him run 70 metres to score to put result beyond doubt. Another by Canberra and a repeat set by Taaffe saw veteran Bryson Goodwin score and give South SYdney a win by 29-8 and a shot at the quarter finals.

LOSS 6-20
Quarter Finals began as the drizzle started coming down in Perth. From the outset North Queensland moved down the filed and scored a simple chip and chase try to take a immediate lead. A good chip and chase kick by Taaffe was pulled back when Damien Cook was called offside. But South Sydney struggled in the first half to contain the bigger Cowboys forwards, and a poor kicking game by Damien Cook wasn't helping the situation, saw the Cowboys having two tries go begging after errors over the line. Then on the last play of the half, again moving the ball wide the Cowboys scored to go in to the break with a 13 point to nil lead. Errors crept in to the Souths game in the second half, with a error from Gebbie resulting in a simple try to the Cowboys and sealing a semi-final birth. Late in the game Paulo scored a consolation try with South Sydney bowing out of the 9s with a 6 to 20 loss. A lot experience was gained by the fringe first grade players, while Damien Cook was over playing his hand.

Reserve Grade - Canterbury NSW Premiership Trial
v Blacktown, Laybutt Field, Sun Feb 16 4:00pm
LOSS 16-20
In the reserve grade trial, a number of last years Jerey Flegg players were trialling along with a number of new faces. Including the French brothers playing in their first game together, and Dane Gagai's brother Jacob. In the first quarter Souths dominated and scored two good tries out wide through O'Connor and Kane Allan. The second quarter however resulted ina number of HIA's first being Josh French, then Speechley and a minute later Kane Allan playing fullback was felled in a heavy tackle while catching the ball. This caused significant disuption to the team losing 3 spine players and saw Blacktown go in with 2 tries. Before winger Dut scored in final few minutes of the half so give Souths the lead 12-8 going in to halftime. In the second half the powerful Blacktown pack started to dominate as they score two tries before Souths hit back with a try to Mogious. Changes cme thinck and fast through the second half with Blacktown scoing the final try to win the trial 20-16. James T, Jacob Gagai, Mougious and Kane Allan all played well, while Quinn, Siolo and Zampech were the pick of the forwards.

v Manly-Warringah, 2:00pm
WIN 24-4
A three way trial was played between Manly and Victoria Thunderbolts, where each game was of 35 minute duration, with halftime taken at the 20 minute mark. It was a classy display the U20s premiers as they hit the field for the first game. Tries to in quick succession to Frasca, Mundine and Robinson put Souths out to a good lead. Fepuleai hit the line hard scoring two tries one before and after the break. Mamouzelus who looks to have improved on his displays from last year scurried over from dummy half, in a dominate game. Manowski, Stowers and Teamoepenu looked good in the forwards.

In the second U20s game a number of changes occured as we ran out a different team. The first half was a tough affair before the big U18s prop Manumanitoga crashed over. Robinson now playing in the halves played very well and darted over a try to give Souths a tough 8-4 lead at the break. Mundine went off with a HIA and Mamozelos came on in the halves. In the second half, Lloyd took control up the middle scoring two tries, while Mamouzelos set up two tries for his outside men. Souths this year have added some size to squad with Akouala-Laula and Fau also big men.

NSWRL U18 SG Ball - Round 2
v Canterbury, Belmore Sports Ground, Sat Feb 15 1:00pm
DRAW 18-18
2020 season is being played in 2 35 minute halves, with the new HIA 18th manbeing available. The South Sydney Rabbitohs SG Ball side showed tremendous fight-back after coming back from 18-0 to eventually share the points with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. It went down to the last play after the Rabbitohs found themselves in great position to take a shot at field-goal, but a heads-up play from the Bulldogs resulted in a one-on-one steal, just as the full-time siren sounded. SG Ball coach, Wayne Collins was particularly happy with Davvy Moale's game in the front-row and Hooker, Ratu Isireli Tuvana Vesikula looked particularly threatening out of Dummy-Half.

2020 season is being played in 2 by 30 minute halves, with the new HIA 18th manbeing available. It was a tough entry into the 2020 competition for the Harold Matthews Rabbitohs, who were faced with the task of coming up against the Bulldogs - a side that has retained 10 of their 2019 Harold Matthews team that made the Grand Final. Despite the scoreline, coach Gavin Sheehan says this is a good experience for his side coming up against a physically-bigger team who have set the benchmark for the competition. "Areas of focus this week are obviously defence and mental resilience, but we should also expect a couple of key players back in the side," Sheehan said.
