WIN 26-12
Latrell Mitchell took 55 seconds to make an impact for his new club but was otherwise kept in cotton wool as South Sydney retained the Charity Shield for an eighth straight year with a 26-12 victory over St George Illawarra in Mudgee. Mitchell linked with Cody Walker on the left edge in the opening minute to send Campbell Graham over the line but the high-prized recruit was otherwise well contained before sitting on the sidelines for the second half. Mitchell's first appearance for his new club was two months in the making after his off-season move from the Roosters attracted mass attention over the summer. His 40-minute cameo included six carries and four tackle busts until his solid opening stint was brought undone by an error under the high ball before half-time. The Bunnies proved too strong in the second period despite coach Wayne Bennett pulling their star-studded spine from the field after 40 minutes. Jayden Su'A's quest to lock in a starting back-row spot in round one hit a hurdle with the Rabbitohs forward suffering a head knock in the opening stages. The Dragons hit the board in the 11th minute when Dane Gagai fumbled a cross-field kick for Tyson Frizell to pounce and send Paul Vaughan over the line. A pair of captain's challenges from each side within a minute of each other proved the new option would take time for teams to adjust to. Dragons co-captain Ben Hunt successfully argued Mitchell's hand brushed a high kick but the Rabbitohs through newly appointed skipper Adam Reynolds lost their challenge when sending a knock-on call to the Bunker. New Dragons recruit Tyrell Fuimaono crashed over the line when he linked with former Rabbitoh Billy Brittain from close range in the ensuing set. A second-half burst from South Sydney turned a 12-4 half-time deficit around within nine minutes. Patrick Mago, Bayley Sironen forced their way over the line with ease inside the Dragons' 20-metre zone in a worry for McGregor ahead of round one, as the Rabbitohs moved to a 16-12 lead. Then a lovely pass from Blake Taaffe sent and Keaon Koloamatangi over untouched with the lead extending out to 20-12. Forgotten man Alex Johnston reminded the Rabbitohs of his ability late in the clash when he linked with Corey Allan on the right edge for a try to take the score to 26-12 The Rabbitohs have now held the Shield since 2013, chalking up seven wins and a draw.

Reserve Grade - Canterbury NSW Premiership Trial
v St George-Illawarra, Erskineville Oval, Sun Mar 1 3:00pm
LOSS 18-26
Ilias was out, and Mougios withdrew in the warm up. L.SuA started on the wing, Bradford at 5/8, Rodwell at prop, with Quinn, Masi, White and S.Mitchell on the bench. After losing key players to Charity Shield duties, the Canterbury Cup had a new-look side against the St George Illawarra Dragons in their last hit-out before the regular season. The team was assisted by a number of Hills District Ron Massey Cup players. The Rabbitohs got off to a great start, leading early, but were starved of possession for most of the game due to poor handling and discipline which marched the Dragons upfield and into good-ball territory. The Dragons had a staggering 64% possession in the second half and a 100-metre try from winger Jacob Saab off a Souths attacking error saw them take the lead despite a pretty back-and-forth game. Ky Rodwell played his first game back from injury while Trent Peoples and Patrice Siolo had solid games in the middle. Ben Talty produced a brilliant cut-out pass for a try but in the end it was Saints who finished on top.

NSWRL U20 Jersey Flegg Trial
v St George-Illawarra, 1:15pm
WIN 30-0
It was a great attacking display by the Jersey Flegg Rabbitohs today at Erskineville Oval but coach Joe O'Callaghan says the most pleasing thing was the defence. Despite a hot day, the Rabbitohs opted to make only eight interchanges during the game, proving their conditioning is top-notch leading into round one. It was a tremendous turnaround from last week's trial. The Rabbitohs picked their times to offload really well and due to the support around the ball, a lot of line breaks and tries came off the back of it. Joshua Fepuleai played a great game bringing a lot of energy from the bench, while both backrowers, Ryan James and Ben Lovett continued to run angles, finding inside shoulders all day.

NSWRL U18 SG Ball - Round 4
v Balmain, Redfern Oval, Sat Feb 29 11:30am
WIN 16-14
Late Changes - Tailai and Nohra were out. Hicks starts at lock and Jang on the bench. The South Sydney Rabbitohs fought back to win narrowly against the Balmain Tigers 16-14 with captain, Dion Teaupa kicking the clutch goal which proved to be the difference. After starting well, the Rabbitohs were rewarded with an early lead but a couple of errors and penalties swung momentum to the Tigers, who managed to hit-back with a try of their own. Both teams entered the arm wrestle until South Sydney crossed again just before half time, taking the score to 10-4. Balmain began the second stanza with intent, scoring two quick-fire tries to take the lead for the first time in the game. However, South Sydney's determination and ability to stay in the fight, which has been proven in previous weeks, shone through. Ratu Isireli Tuvana Vesikula at hooker controlled the game and steered the ship well for coach Wayne Collins and the Rabbitohs.

Late Changes - Gailo, T.White, McInnes were out. Flynn starts at half, Isaia-Hardy at second row, M'Crystal, Tahere and Anderson on the bench. The South Sydney Rabbitohs picked up their first win of the 2020 Harold Matthews season after defeating the Balmain Tigers at Metricon High Performance Centre, Redfern Oval on Saturday. South Sydney led early 16-0 and winger Jaxon Frintzilas scored a brilliant solo try from 50 metres out; ducking, weaving and dummying his way to the try line. A couple of positional changes from coach Gaven Sheehan, saw fullback and Captain, Aaron Macey shift to the centres while winger Omar Noureddine made the switch to fullback. These positional changes gave the Rabbitohs more fluidity in attack. Half, Cooper McGrath played a pivotal role in steering the team around while twin brother, Ryan McGrath plugged the middle at lock.

NSWRL Womens Premiership Trial
v Monaro, St Marys Stadium, Sat Feb 29 2:30pm
LOSS 4-14
The South Sydney Rabbitohs Womens Premiership team fell short to Monaro at St Mary's Sports Stadium 14-4 today in week three of trials. A strong start by the Rabbitohs saw them march up-field and into Monaro's red zone in the opening set of the game, only to be held up over the line courtesy of brilliant scrambling defence. While Monaro held on, back-to-back penalties by the Rabbitohs relieved pressure for the hosts, which presented their first shot on South Sydney's line. Similar to the defence Monaro displayed moments prior, the Rabbitohs were physical and an intercept saved the day for the Red and Green. Both teams entered the arm wrestle and went set-for-set until a penalty to South Sydney put them in great attacking field position. Back-rower, Ellie Johnston posted first points of the game while the conversion attempt was waved away, giving the Rabbitohs a 4-0 lead with 20 minutes remaining in the first half. The Rabbitohs made a mistake from the kick-off which gave Monaro a chance at levelling the scores. However, defence was the theme of the game and they managed to hold on. This was the trend for the next two sets - Rabbitohs making a mistake on the second or third tackle but managing to find the energy to show desperation in their defence and repel Monaro's attacking onslaught. Despite having chances on each other's line, a combination of poor ball security and great defence from both sides meant no further points would be posted in the half. This saw South Sydney maintain their 4-0 lead at the break. The first set after the break continued the theme of the first half after an early mistake by the Rabbitohs gifted an attacking opportunity to Monaro. While holding on, a failed touch attempt from a Souths penalty gave Monaro an opportunity to build more pressure. The hosts finally cracked the Rabbitohs' line, posting their first points through a delicately-weighted grubber kick which was swooped upon by Monaro in an instant. The conversion attempt was waved away but Monaro were able to level the scores at four-apiece. The poor ball security continued for the Rabbitohs for the middle part of the second half, starving them of possession. With 10 minutes remaining in the game, Monaro made the Rabbitohs pay through a try in the corner after electing to run the ball on last. The shot at goal was waved away but Monaro had taken the lead for the first time in the game, 8-4. Despite South Sydney clawing their way back into the fight, a lost ball in good field position turned over possession cheaply. Monaro were able to confirm their victory after scoring another try under the posts with three minutes remaining. The goal was converted which extended their lead and left the final score at 14-4. Despite an error-riddled performance, South Sydney Coach Dean Widders would be proud of the defensive display and commitment shown by his girls but will be looking to improve with ball-in-hand.
