WIN 22-18
Two tries by Sharks winger Sione Katoa in a three-minute burst was still not enough to wrestle a win from South Sydney on Saturday night at ANZ Stadium. The Sharks have endured a long losing drought against the Bunnies at ANZ Stadium, not tasting victory since 2008. And tonight’s 22-18 win by Wayne Bennett’s men continued that theme. It’s uncertain if the meagre 6,235 crowd was due to a rainy day, the late Saturday afternoon time slot, the venue or the coronavirus scare. The day before the Australian government announced measures to limit public gatherings that are to come into effect on Monday. The Sharks got off to early start leading 2-0 before Reynolds avoid a rush to score under the posts to give Souths a 6-2 lead after 11 minutes. With a large number of stoppages from players walking off the mark South Sydney continued the early dominace with two more penalty goals to lead 10-2 after 20 minutes. Reynolds was playing a starring role scoring his team’s first try for 2020 in his first season as captain. Mitchell had a quiet start. His first real touch of the football while making metres, didn’t come until the 21st minute. It was appreciated by the small crowd with a hearty cheer going up. The small but vocal crowd of mainly Rabbitohs fans was at fever pitch and they willed their side home. Sharks, winger Ronaldo Mulitalo failed his HIA after his head hit the ground hard in a tackle midway through the first half. A contraversial penalty was compounded when James Roberts was sent to sin bin for a professional foul 9 minutes from half-time. Cronulla immediately scored through the gap in defence the Sharks narrowed the lead to just two points through a Wade Graham try 10-8. With just 42 seconds left in the opening half, and the Rabbitohs reduced to 12 men, winger Campbell Graham scored in the south-east corner off an Ethan Lowe overhead pass. Then Reynolds converted from the sideline to send South Sydney into the halftime break up 16-8. Cody Walker’s creative kicking lead to another try by Ethan Lowe as Souths extended the lead to 22-8, 7 minutes into the second half. Mitchell was interchanged with Alex Johnston in the 55th minute after he had made his presence felt with a few nifty offloads and kicks, despite being It seemed his legs need a few more matches yet to get the full fitness required. The Sharks hit back with two quick tries through Katoa’s acrobatics in the 62nd and 65th minute – courtesy of crafty lead-up work from Shaun Johnson and Will Kennedy. But perhaps Souths could consider themselves lucky as the Sharks dominated the last 20 minutes on the back of 1-8 penalty count. Then a pass from utility Connor Tracey to put Josh Morris over was ruled forward with 90 seconds left in the game. It ended up three tries apiece with the boot of Adam Reynolds the difference. He didn’t miss, kicking three penalties and two conversions. Not to be outdone Sharks skipper Wade Graham scored his team’s first four-pointer. The remaining points for Souths came from a Lowe, who after assisting Graham in the 39th minute, scored one of his own in the 48th.

LOSS 12-32
Late Changes - Peoples is out. J.Gagai is the concussion substitue They're the 2019 National Premiers for a reason so South Sydney new they had a job on their hands hosting the Jets at Metricon High Performance Centre this afternoon going down 32-12. The Rabbitohs got off to a flying start through the light-stepping of Blake Taaffe who opened the scoring in the fifth minute. Taaffe's ability to hit top acceleration in the blink of an eye was too much to handle for the Newtown left centre, who was burnt on the outside. He converted his try from the sideline which gave Souths the dream start with the score at 6-0. Steven Marsters almost crossed for the Rabbitohs' second try only moments later but the bounce of the ball, from the Blake Taaffe grubber, was tricky for the new recruit to control in the in-goal. Despite this, it was a start coach Ben Rogers would have been pleased with but uncharacteristic errors began to creep in which invited the Jets into the game. Billy Magoulias made his mark with brilliant game management either by turning the South Sydney back-three around or forcing repeat sets with well-weighted grubbers. Due to the build up of possession Newtown crossed with two quick-fire tries; both close to the line. Firstly through Frontrower, Royce Hunt, and then with Addison Demitriou at left Centre. Braydon Trindall made no mistake with the conversion attempts which extended the Jets' lead to six points with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Keaon Koloamatangi tried to lift the Rabbitohs' intensity with some hard-nosed running which helped Dummy-half, Joshua Cook, play off the back of him. Sifa Talakai did the same for the Jets however which put the wind back in the visitors' sails, and the boys in blue managed to post two more tries before the break in a matter of minutes. Firstly, to Jackson Ferris and then Kayleb Milne. With the score at 24-6 at the half it would take a big effort for the Rabbitohs to fight back. The Rabbitohs began the second half with intensity in their defence and kept Newtown out on a number of occasions. An uncharacteristic mistake from Corey Allan at the back however gave possession back to Newtown's Addison Demitriou, who then flicked the ball out the back for Teig Wilton to score in the one play. Trindall again added another two points which took the score to 30-6. Both teams were guilty of rather poor handling in the middle part of the second half but South Sydney continued to chance their hand with the limited opportunities they had with the football. Jaxson Paulo was denied a try after a spectacular effort from the winger to plant the ball down, was eventually deemed that he had lost it. Newtown's game management shone through when they elected to take the two points after receiving a penalty close to the posts. Trindall continued the perfect day with the boot. It was the Rabbitohs who had the final say when Bryson Goodwin found Jaxson Paulo on a shift play which gave him more room to work this time. Paulo made no mistakes, but it was all too late with Taaffe kicking the final conversion from the sideline as the seconds ticked down in the final minute.

NSWRL U20 Jersey Flegg - Round 1
v Cronulla-Sutherland, 2:10pm
WIN 32-30
Late Changes - Mamouzelos was out. Zaurini started hooker, Ilias five-eighth and Payne at half. Lovett was the concussion substitute. The South Sydney Rabbitohs have posted a thrilling 32-30 comeback win courtesy of a Lachlan Ilias penalty goal after the full time siren! A five star performance from halfback, Lachlan Ilias, steered South Sydney to victory after bagging a double and kicking the winning penalty goal from the sideline with a clutch effort. Tallis Angianga and Zane Bijorac also picked up doubles in a tremendous fight-back from South Sydney, after being down 18-0 at one stage. With the rain bucketing down, whoever managed the game better and held onto the ball would no doubt go a long way in picking up the two points. South Sydney started proceedings with a great set, marching up-field which saw Daniel Payne and CJ Mundine combine early as Mundine busted through the Sharks' left-edge defence with late footwork. Great game-management from Ilias built pressure on the Sharks' line after putting in a deft grubber through for a repeat set. The pressure was relieved however, with a simple turnover late in the set. Cronulla-Sutherland showed grit in defence, but by being too over-eager they were penalised which gave Souths a piggy-back out of their own end. Back-to-back penalties put the Rabbitohs right on the attack again and despite the early dominance in field position and possession, simple turnovers handed the ball back to the visitors. The Sharks made the Rabbitohs pay by posting the first points of the game through Fullback, Jonaiah LuaLua in the 13th minute. A simple slide of hands down the right from the Sharks busted the Rabbitohs defence with Lualua supporting back on the inside as all good Fullbacks do. With the early lead, the Sharks had the wind in their sails in the set preceding but a bruising read by winger Zane Bijorac shut down the play and turned possession back over to the Rabbitohs. The boys from the Shire went back-ball back through Front-rower, Franklin Pele, who busted through the Souths' middle, off the back of a slick inside ball. The Sharks were building nicely and a pinball-like ricochet kick a couple of sets later found its way back in the arms of the Sharks' Winger, Marco Talagi. In the torrential conditions the stretcher was called for Bradley Zampech which brought live-wire Chaise Robinson into the game with 15 minutes remaining in the first half, shifting Tallis Angianga from the left Centre to Backrow. Robinson's injection was vital in South Sydney's come back. His first touch of the game resulted in a try when he put through a grubber for Angianga, taking the score to 18-6 after a successful kick for goal. The momentum shifted back to South Sydney when Marc Zaurrini made a bust up-field and Lachlan Ilias managed to slice through; beating a number of defenders to plant the ball down just before the break. After converting his own try, the Rabbitohs went into the sheds just six points behind. Upon resumption the Sharks started red-hot, building pressure through forcing a number of repeat sets. There was a fairly back-and-forth period with both teams entering the arm wrestle before the Sharks' Hooker, Isaac Longmuir scored through a simple show-and-go, exposing the South Sydney marker. Angust Ernst extended the lead to 24-12 to the Sharks. The Rabbitohs made sure they were first to hit back when Lachlan Ilias went down the short-side to find Chaise Robinson who then flicked it out to Zane Bijorac for the athletic finish in the 63rd minute. Bijorac went back-to-back three minutes later after a brilliant grubber from Marc Zuarrini down the short-side was pounced on, taking the score to 24-20 to Cronulla-Sutherland. The Rabbitohs' right-side got involved as well when a great ball to Fruean Easthope put the Winger in-space with none other than Lachlan Ilias supporting on the inside to crash over for his double. He kicked the goal to give South Sydney the lead at 26-24 for the first time in the game. The Rabbitohs were running-rampant when Tallis Angianga bustled his way over in the set following and despite the missed conversion from the sideline, South Sydney had a six-point lead with under five minutes remaining. It was a dramatic final few minutes when Angianga gave away a penalty by playing at the short restart (that didn't go the 10). Franklin Pele crashed over for his double close to the posts which was naturally converted; levelling the scores with under a minute remaining. The Rabbitohs managed to regain possession off the kick-off and a brave short-side play by Chaise Robinson saw the utility pick up a penalty close to the sideline, for being taken out without the ball. Lachlan Ilias stepped up to the mark to attempt the shot at goal after the siren had sounded. A cool effort from the level-headed Halfback slotted the two points, confirming a 32-30 victory to the Rabbitohs.

NSWRL Womens Premiership - Round 1
v St Marys, St Marys Stadium, Sun Mar 15 11:30am
LOSS 4-18
Late Changes - Allende and Kennedy were out. Barlow started second row. Gibson was the concussion substitute. The South Sydney Rabbitohs Womens Premiership side have lost their round one season-opener to Saints 18-4 away, after a courageous fightback led by Indigenous All Stars representative, Nakia Davis-Welsh was all too late in the end. The game started to-and-fro until Saints gave away a penalty which gifted Souths the first attacking set of the game, within the first few minutes; but an obstruction play denied them from opening the scoring. A period of ill-discipline from South Sydney saw them give away back-to-back penalties which presented Saints with an opportunity to crack the visitors' line. Brilliant scrambling defence from the Rabbitohs held off the Saints attack but cheap turnovers kept them in good field position until the hosts eventually crossed through Centre, Shanai Allison. The try was converted by Five-Eighth, Ashlee Harrison giving them the perfect start at 6-0. South Sydney Second-Rower, Ellie Johnston was a stand-out in her first ever game for the Club, picking up where she left off with brilliant trial form. Johnston made a break up-field which put the Rabbitohs back on the attack but Saints showed grit in their defence to hold them out. Again, ill-discipline marched Saints back up-field off the back of a penalty until they failed to find touch which was a turning point in the game. The momentum swung when penalties crept into Saints' game and Sarah Field showed poise with her game management, putting back-to-back sets together for South Sydney. It was a fairly even end to the first half until Saints put three sets-of-six together and looked likely to cross over, but defence was the cornerstone of South Sydney's half which kept the score at 6-0 at the break. The Rabbitohs came out of the half time chat looking fresh, bringing out more harnessed-aggression in defence. Saints started scrappy on the other hand which saw Souths dominate field position in the first 10 minutes upon resumption. To the host's credit, they showed up in defence and made it extremely difficult for the Rabbitohs to crack their line. Against the run-of-play Saints scored their second through Fullback Rikeya Horne, who showed a brilliant turn of speed to out-pace her opponent. The successful conversion attempt, took the score to 12-0 in the 61st minute. Back-to-back tries from Saints, this time up the middle of the ruck, extended their lead to three converted tries until Nakia Davis-Welsh managed to post the first points for South Sydney by diving on a grubber in the in-goal. The conversion attempt was waved-away by Rihanna Sutherland which left the final score at 18-4 to Saints.
