LOSS 18-26
Storm coach Craig Bellamy hopes Thursday night's victory over the Rabbitohs has answered many of the questions. A dazzling double from Ryan Papenhuyzen sparked Melbourne to a 26-18 win over South Sydney at AAMI Park as the premiers made the perfect start to the post-Smith era. In the first set the Storm marched upfield, with two offloads that setup field position as the Storm crossed through Munster to lead 6 nil after 2 minutes. A long range break by Addo-Carr after the Storm shifted early in their 20m zone lead to their second try to Justin Olam inside the first 10 minutes for a 12 nil lead. Papenhuyzen’s first try in the 17th minute came after he put Kenny Bromwich through a hole with a sweet pass and then took a return ball from the back-rower to score. 18 nil. After Graham passed a ball forward inside their 10m zone, Papenhuyzen scored his second four-pointer through a individual effort into the right corner as he showcased his blinding speed to beat three defenders. 22 nil. With Arrow and Koloamatangi coming on strightened South South attack and with Marshall then also coming on paid immediate dividends. South Sydney now changed their configuration to basically be a 5-man pack with Marshall slotting in as additional playmaker. Off a error by Melbourne, South Sydney did a lovely left side play sending prolific winger Alex Johnston in for his first try. For the remaining 8 minutes of half South Sydney were more composed and began challenging the STorm. The team went into the break 6-22. A few minutes after the interval Johnston was in again off a great cutout pass from Walker. Reynolds added the extras and the lead had been reduced to 12 to 22. A poor kickoff return put South Sydney under pressure which eventuated in Gagai dropping the ball and Cook giving away a penalty for Melbourne to gain a easy penalty goal 12 to 24 after 48 minutes. In a scene from Laurel and Hardy Olam who looked like he had knocked on but the referee allow him to play the ball, got up a put the ball on the ground and walked away, resulting in a scrum to South Sydney. The resulting set of six saw Mitchell touch down out wide, and Reynolds again adding the extras from the sidline saw the margin was reduce to just six points 18-24 with 20 minutes to play. But a highly dubious penalty 3 minutes later when Gagai crowded the kicker Hughes saw Papenhuyzen slot a simple penalty goal to make the margin eight. The game then remained scoreless for the remaining 20 minutes. A late injury to prop Thomas Burgess, who was stretchered off after suffering a 'burner' in his arm, added more pain for the visitors. The victory means the Storm maintained their exceptional record of not having lost a round one encounter since 2001, while the Bunnies have lost 17 from 17 games in Melbourne. And the Rabbitohs hoodoo of not winning in Melbourne remains. After an off-season recruiting spree that netted veteran duo Josh Mansour and Benji Marshall, the Bunnies will be disappointed with their sluggish start and the number of errors they committed. The much-hyped spine of Latrell Mitchell, Cody Walker, Adam Reynolds and Damien Cook looked disjointed for much of the contest, with the Storm winning the majority of one-on-one battles over the field.

v Penrith, Penrith Stadium, Sat Mar 13 5:15pm
LOSS 26-36
Late Changes - Souths were unchanged. Panthers Stadium held a frenzied first round match between the Penrith Panthers and South Sydney Rabbitohs, which saw the home side salvage their first two points of the season in a 36-26 win at Panthers Stadium. The Panthers came out firing in the first half, scoring their first points of the season in the ninth minute through a try by Scott Sorensen, who dived on a loose ball in the in-goal, before adding another two within just ten minutes, through the efforts of five-eighth Matt Burton and centre Izack Tago. Up 18-0 in the 18th minute of the game, it looked set to be a comfortable win for the home side, until Jaxson Paulo touched down for the Rabbitohs’ first try of the season before being taken off for an injury. There were no shortage of tries in the first half and the tally increased even further when Souths scored through winger Jacob Gagai, who was found perfectly by a Troy Dargan grubber to score his first try of the season, which was converted yet again by Hawkins, the away side heading into the half-time break trailing by four points. Both teams came out confident they could add some more points on the board, and the Rabbitohs wasted little time continuing their momentum from late in the first half, scoring through Dargan just ten minutes into the restart. Converted again by Hawkins, the Panthers found themselves behind by two, before the Rabbitohs’ lead extended to eight through hooker Joshua Cook, who bagged himself a try only four minutes later, with Hawkins converting a perfect five-from-five. Just when it looked like Panthers were down and out, the momentum of the game shifted yet again, when second-rower Billy Burns finally disrupted the away side’s 26 unanswered points with a try of his own, which was converted by Kurt Falls. The chaos of the opening game of the season for both these sides continued, when the Panthers showed their class and attitude to score through fullback Brent Naden, before Falls converted the try to make it a 30-26 lead for the home side. The Panthers secured the win in the concluding seconds of the game through Taylan May, who touched down in the corner to seal a 36-26 win for the home side in their opening game of the season.
