Reserve Grade - NSW Premiership Round 13
v St George-Illawarra, Redfern Oval, Sat Jun 5 2:00pm
LOSS 18-40
Late Changes - Team was 1-17. Vaigalu was the concussion substitute. The St George Illawarra Dragons have dominated with try-scoring doubles to Adam Clune and Jayden Sullivan in front of a teeming South Sydney home crowd, securing their position ahead of last place on The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup ladder. An energised Rabbitohs squad were first to score in front of their home fans. Motoring up the field, Dean Hawkins directed his team to angle towards the short side. Slotting an unpredictable grubber behind the Dragons' goal line defence, Hawkins found second-rower Jed Cartwright to score in the in-goal area. The Dragons soon responded with their first try of the game by demonstrating excellent support running. Halfback Adam Clune sent his left edge second-rower Billy Burns through the Rabbitohs' defence with a well-timed short pass. Burns found fullback Treigh Stewart running in support. Drawing in his opposing defender, Stewart passed back to Clune who followed the attacking play he initiated, scoring his first of the game. The home team held onto most of the possession throughout the first half, forcing the Dragons to defend tough forward runs from Patrick Mago and James Hasson. The Rabbitohs backed up their attack with grinding defence, limiting the Dragons who rarely broke the 50-metre line. Exploiting their well-earned field position, South Sydney spread the ball to their left edge for winger Jacob Gagai to score, securing the lead for his team. Despite continuing to find themselves in perfect attacking position, the Rabbitohs were unable to capitalise on their hard work, fumbling the ball on multiple occasions within reach of the try line. The Dragons finally found momentum as they exploited a depleted Souths defensive line after James Hasson was sent to the sin bin after repeated efforts to slow down the play-the-ball. Highlighting an exciting halfback-second row partnership, Adam Clune and Billy Burns linked up once again to score St George Illawarra’s second try of the game to keep the scores even before the halftime break. The visitors continued their momentum, scoring two tries within the first ten minutes of the second half. Exploiting the remaining time against an undermanned defence, Jayden Sullivan dived onto the ball after it was dribbled into the in-goal area, ricocheting off multiple Rabbitohs defenders to secure his first for the afternoon. St George Illawarra quickly returned to attacking position through several line breaks and quick play-the-balls. Noticing a disjointed Rabbitohs defensive line, Sullivan involved himself again, sending a rocket pass across the face of multiple edge players to find Sam McCann in open space to solidify the Dragons' lead. Even though they were playing in front of a packed home crowd, the Rabbitohs were unable to find any consistency on either end of the field. The Dragons ran away with the game with three more unanswered tries to Stewart, Sullivan and Clune through line breaks off the back of undisciplined Rabbitohs defence. With the game all but over the Rabbitohs resorted to unsuccessful Hail Mary plays throughout the last 15 minutes of the game. Finding the line with minutes left in the contest, centre Tautau Moga dodged the sideline and squeezed through the Dragons' defence to lessen the blow of South Sydney's deflating loss.
