WIN 24-10
The Rabbitohs secure their 10th win of the season with a 24 - 10 victory over the Newcastle Knights. Alex Johnston once again starred for the Rabbitohs, coming away with his seventh career hat-trick and second in just two games. A new look line up took the field for the Rabbitohs on Saturday night as Origin stars Damien Cook, Cameron Murray, Jai Arrow and Dane Gagai were rested. This presented the opportunity for South Sydney Junior Peter Mamouzelos to make his NRL debut in the 30th minute. Prior to kick-off, Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett had this to say on Fox League about Mamouzelos; “He’s one of those guys with a lot of natural gifts. He’s pretty smart, has got good footwork, good speed and tremendous work ethic. That’s pretty important when you’re playing hooker.” Mamouzelos, who recently re-signed with the Rabbitohs until at least the end of the 2024 season, proved himself more than capable of playing in the top grade. In the second half, he was given the opportunity to start as hooker and finished the game with 21 tackles. Latrell Mitchell and Jaydn Su'A both backed up after their Origin performances earlier in the week. With Latrell Mitchell putting on another masterclass running for 194 metres and Su'A coming away with his second try of the season. The Rabbitohs opened up the scoring early with Alex Johnston crossing the line in the 2nd minute after an early mistake from Tex Hoy. It was the Rabbitohs deadly left side attack, with their quick hands and precision passing which left Johnston, one of the games best finishers, in the prime position to clean up the points. The Knights, who were coming off the back of their biggest loss of the season, had a lot to prove in the first half, dominating possession with 56% of the ball. They were finally able to break through the Rabbitohs defensive line in the 22nd minute with NRL rookie, Dominic Young, crossing the line in the corner. Jake Clifford was unable to convert from the sideline. It wasn't long however, until the Rabbitohs left edge stuck once again in the 31st minute with Cody Walker throwing a cut out pass to Johnston who crossed the line for his second of the night. The Knights fired back just a couple minutes later, with Kurt Mann winning the chase to the ball after a pinpoint kick from Clifford just before half time making it a two point ball game as the teams headed to the sheds. Both teams came out firing in the second half, however it was the Rabbitohs who drew first blood. In the 46th minute, Johnston showed off his incredible acrobatic skills when he went over for his second hat-trick in just two games after another bullet pass from Walker. This makes it the seventh hat-trick of Johnston’s career - a huge achievement for the young winger. The Knights suffered a huge blow with star, Bradman Best, having to be escorted from the field early in the second half with a suspected leg injury. He was unable to return for the duration of the game. In the 59th minute, Jaydn Su’A with a brilliant bit of heads up play, was able to secure his second try of the season. Su’A followed through after he managed to get a boot to the ball in an exceptional display of skill. At the end of the 80 minutes, a depleted Rabbitohs ran away with their 10th win of the season, claiming victory over the Knights 24 -10.

v Newcastle, 12:40pm
LOSS 30-44
Late Changes - Knight and Mamouzelos were out. Taumoepenu started prop, Dargan at hooker. Anderson was concussion sub. Away from home, the Newcastle Knights conjured up a scintillating performance to blow the South Sydney Rabbitohs off the park with a 44-30 win at Stadium Australia The Knights were on song from the first whistle, toppling the Bunnies forwards early. Making a break, Knight’s prop Daniel Ticehurst collected an inside pass to stroll over under the posts for the first points of the match. A short side play worked wonders for the Knights moments later, as Dylan Lucas tiptoed the sideline to crash over, extending Newcastle’s led to 10 after 15 minutes. Momentum heavily with the Knights led to more trouble for Souths. Again, busting through the middle Newcastle caused havoc, with try-scorer turned playmaker Daniel Ticehurst delivering a slick ball, allowing Simi Sasagi to race away for the knights third try. Paper-thin goal-line defence allowed the Knights to continue to terrorise Souths. Multiple threatening attacks saw Newcastle over again, this time Zac Hosking scored courtesy of a crash play close to the line. The Knights weren’t backing down. Another midfield break propelled Newcastle upfield, where a quick shift to the left granted Dylan Lucas a double. Half time couldn’t come quick enough for Souths, with the Knights cruising out to a 26-0 lead after only 27 minutes. A spectacular length of the field try allowed Dylan Lucas to pick up a hat-trick inside the space of half an hour, as Newcastle continued to keep pace with the clock extending their tally to 32 points after a successful conversion from McKenzie Baker. The Bunnies did find their way onto the board just before the break, as prop Patrick Mago bundled his way over the try line. The Rabbits couldn’t manage another as the try-scoring first half drew to a close with Newcastle leading the home side 32-6. Not willing to put the cue in the rack just yet, it was slick passing that saw Newcastle’s Simi Sasagi pick up his second try of the match. The Knights with the perfect start to the second half as goal kicker Zane Camroux slotted his first conversion after relieving McKenzie Baker from the kicking duties. Souths rallied to show some competitive spirit. A long floating pass down the right-hand side saw Bunnies winger Nick Mougios dive into the corner. The Rabbitohs received prime field position again after Newcastle’s kick off landed out on the full. Eerily similar to his first try, Mago again forced his way over the line for a double. Dean Hawkins continued his perfect record with the boot slotting 3/3 to narrow the scoreline down to a 20-point difference. With less than 20 minutes on the clock, the Bunnies scored a third consecutive try, beginning to worry the Knights. Jacob Gagai crossed the line from a well-worked left side play, reducing Newcastle’s lead to 14 points. However, despite the late surge, Newcastle would put the icing on the cake in the dying stages of the match. Fittingly it was star performer Dylan Lucas who raced 60 meters to score untouched, his 4th try of the match. The Rabbits managed another consolation try, as Pele Vaigalu dove over from close range. The final play of the game brought the match total to a mammoth 13 tries, a memorable afternoon for the Knights, as they were victorious over the Bunnies 44-30.
