Bowers was a seasoned Queensland interstate rugby union and rugby league player before coming to South Sydney late in his career. He was also is a former Queensland amateur heavy-weight boxing champion. He also sailed 18-footers in Queensland. Prior to coming to South Sydney, Bowers was involved in a mid 1940 season transfer dispute between the Ipswich Rugby League and the Brisbane Rugby League when he did not obtain a clearance to transfer. The dispute went on for months and was a trigger for him to leave Brisbane. After representing Queensland once again in 1941, he transfered to South Sydney mid 1941 season. He made his South Sydney first grade club debut in the 1941 Tour match against Bathurst at Bathurst. Two weeks later he made his first grade premiership debut in the Round 9 clash against Newtown at the Sports Ground.
Bowers was a big forward, who has been called into teams to add size to their pack.
Bowers only played 1 season with South Sydney in 1941. He played 8 first grade club games for South Sydney, which included 6 first grade premiership games and 1 first grade cup game. He played all of his footabll at South Sydney in first grade.
Bowers played his final first grade premiership game for South Sydney in the 1941 Round 14 clash against Western Suburbs at the Sports Ground. The following week he played his final first grade club and cup game for South Sydney in the 1941 Cup-Tie clash against Group 10 in Lithgow.
