Brighton born in England, was a seasoned Queensland rugby union player, before switching to rugby league late in his career. In 1903 he was caught up in a clearance dispute between Ipswich and South Brisbane RU, before his family settled in Rockhampton. He made his way to South Sydney after playing 9 seasons of Queensland RU and 2 seasons with Glebe. In 1913 a permit dispute arose when Brighton qualified for South Sydney. Glebe requested a permit to play him, but after being selected for Sydney Metropolis and New South Wales in 1912, South Sydney refused. Brighton made his senior grade and first grade premiership debut in the 1913 Round 1 clash against Western Suburbs at Pratten Park.
One of the oldest South Sydney players to debut at 31 years, Brighton would be one of the first hookers to use the "two feet" off the ground hooking method.
Brighton would only play 1 season with South Sydney in 1913. He played 11 first grade club games for South Sydney, which included 9 first grade premiership games and 2 first grade cup games.
Brighton played his final first grade premiership game in the 1913 Round 14 clash against North Sydney at North Sydney Oval. His final senior grade and first grade club game was in the 1913 City Cup Semi-Final against North Sydney at the Sports Ground. In 1914 Brighton failed to gain selection in the South Sydney team, and later in 1914 enlisted in the war effort.
