Caffrey made his senior grade debut, for South Sydney Third Grade in 1934 Roud 5 against North Sydney at North Sydney Oval, before debuted in reserve grade in Round 10 again against North Sydney but at Chatswood Oval. He made his first grade and premiership debut in 1935 Round 1 against University at the Sports Ground.
Caffrey played 2 seasons with South Sydney. He would have a short first grade career playing just 4 games, including 3 premiership games. He would play 31 career grade games, of which 30 were premiership grade games.
