After Leaving South Sydney
At the outbreak of World War I, Darmody was playing with Hull and enlisted in the British Army in the Motor Transport Section. He saw service on the Western Front in Flanders as a despatch rider for the Service Corps. He was wounded when a fly-wheel he was servicing caught the lower part of his leg, servering his foot completely. He was trapped for 2.5 hours. His foot was mangled in that machinery accident early in the war resulting in the loss of his foot. He had an artificial limb fitted and then re-enlisted. Steve would write postcards home to Sydney to brother Fred in a secret war time code. He would remain in the UK for the rest of his life.
