Finucane, educated at Marist Bros. Randwick, was an all round champion schoolboy sporting star, who excelled at multiple sports including swimming, shotput, high jump and running, where he would win 100 and 200 yard races. He joined the South Sydney third grade team for a picnic match late in 1934. He was a standout in the 1935 season trials and quickly found himself in the senior grade. He made his South Sydney senior grade debut in Round 1 1935 in Reserve Grade against University at the Sports Ground. A few weeks later he made his first grade premiership debut in Round 4 1935 against Western Suburbs at Pratten Park. At age 20, Finucane would sign up for the military, while still playing for South Sydney.
Finucane would play 2 seasons for South Sydney. He played 30 first grade games, which included 25 first grade premiership and 2 first grade cup games. He would play 34 senior grade games for South Sydney, which included 29 premiership grade games.
At representative level, Finucane played in 5 representative games while at South Sydney, with his highest achivement being one game for Sydney in 1936.
Finucane played his final first grade premiership game in Round 13 1936 against Canterbury-Bankstown at Belmore Oval.
