Hewitt trialled with South Sydney in 1933 and 1934, before being graded in 1935. He made his senior grade debut in the 1935 Round 1 Third Grade clash against University at the Sports Ground. He was called up in first grade making his debut in the 1935 tour game against Newcastle Division at the Newcastle Showground. In Round 11 1935 he made his first grade premiership debut against Canterbury-Bankstown at the Sports Ground.
Hewitt played for 2 seasons with South Sydney. He played 6 first grade games, which included 3 first grade premiership games. He also played 22 senior career grade games, which included 19 senior grade premiership games. Hewitt played his final first grade premiership game in Round 6 1936 against North Sydney at North Sydney Oval.
