Hickey trialed with South Sydney in 1940 but was not graded. He returned after a season with Canterbury and was graded in 1946. After being injured in the trials he made his senior grade and first grade club and premiership debut in the 1946 Round 2 clash against Western Suburbs at Pratten Park.
