Jones made his South Sydney senior grade debut in the 1937 Round 1 Reserve Grade clash against University at the Sports Ground. He made his first grade debut with South Sydney in the Round 1 City Cup against University at the Sports Ground.
Jones then departed South Sydney to coach in the country for a year in Portland, before returning to play in the City Houses competition for two years.
He returned to South Sydney in 1941, making his first grade premiership debut in the final round, 1941 Round 14 clash against Western Suburbs at the Sports Ground.
