Mackie, is a GPS rugby union convert from St Josephs, he then converted to Rugby League while in Newcastle, and joined the Army. He joined South Sydney late in the 1944 season from the Army under the serviceman rule while stationed at Victoria Barracks, and showed splendid frm in the Army games during the 1944 season. Mackie was involved in a transfer dispute after he was originally granted permission to play with North Sydney under the servicemans rule, but never played a game. South Sydney then applied successfully for him to play with them late in the 1944 season. He made his senior grade club and first grade cup debut in the 1944 State Championship Semi-Final Cup-Tie against St George at Erskineville Oval. The following week he made his senior grade premiership debut in the 1944 Major Semi-Final clash against Balmain at the Sydney Cricket Ground. A week later he made his first grade premiership debut in the 1944 Minor Semi-Final clash against Balmain at the Sydney Cricket Ground, being sent off on debut.
Mackie was considered a star hooker, who is exceptional fast across the ground. He ran 100 yards in 10.2s.
Mackie played 2 seasons with South Sydney between 1944 and 1945. He played 7 first grade club games for South Sydney which included 6 first grade premiership games and 1 first grade cup game. Overall he played 8 senior grade club games for South Sydney, which included 7 senior grade premiership games.
Mackie played his final first grade premiership game for South Sydney in the 1945 Round 7 clash against Western Suburbs at the Sports Ground.
