McAnulty trialled in 1939 and was graded. He made his senior grade debut with South Sydney in the 1939 Round 1 Reserve Grade clash against St George at Earl Park. In 1940 he joined the first grade squad making his first grade club debut in the 1940 Tour match against Goulburn at Goulburn. He made his first grade premiership grade debut in the 1941 Round 4 clash against Canterbury-Bankstown at Belmore Oval.
McAnulty was a forward who was able to play hooker, prop and second row during his career. McAnulty join Whitfield in the gym and put on a stone in muscle mass, as some of the first group of players to utilise a gym routine.
In 1942 joined the RAAF as a Leading Aircraftman working as a aircraft mechanic, breifly returning to play with South Sydney in 1944, before being stationed in Darwin from until the end of the war in 1945.
McAnulty played 5 seasons with South Sydney between 1939 and 1944. He played 8 first grade club games for South Sdyney, which included 6 first grade premiership games. Overall he played 47 senior grade club games for South Sydney, which included 45 senior grade premiership games.
McAnulty played his final first grade premiership game for South Sydney in the 1944 Semi-Final clash against Balmain at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
