McGrath, was schooled at Batrician Brothers, Redfern and is a South Sydney junior from Lauriston B Grade, who was called up into grade mid season. He made his senior grade club and premiership debut for South Sydney in the 1942 Round 6 Third Grade clash against North Sydney at the Sports Ground. A month later he jumped from third grade into first grade, making his frsi grade club and premiership for South Sydney in the 1942 Round 9 clash against Western Suburbs at the Sports Ground.
McGrath is a youthful speedy and resourceful winger. At the end of 1942 he enlisted in the Army and returned to South Sydney in 1945.
