Murphy was a Gunner in the Royal Australian Artillery First Field Cadre, stationed at Victoria Barracks in Paddington. After a few seasons turning out for military rugby union teams, in 1938 he chose to play for South Sydney. He made his senior grade club and premiership debut in the 1938 Round 1 Reserve Grade clash against Balmain at Leichhardt Oval. 2 days later he was called up to make his first grade premiership debut in the 1938 Round 2 ANZAC Day clash against Eastern Suburbs at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Murphy would play 2 seasons with South Sydney between 1938 and 1939. He played 6 first grade premiership games for South Sydney. He played 16 senior grade premiership club games for South Sydney.
Murphy's final first grade premiership game was in the 1938 Round 13 match against Canterbury-Bankstown at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
