Schmidt was a South Sydney Junior from Kensington. He made his senior grade South Sydney debut in the 1937 Round 8 Third Grade City Cup clash against North Sydney at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The following season he stepped up into Reserve Grade, for South Sydney, playing his first game in the 1938 Round 1 Reserve Grade clash against Balmain at Leichhardt Oval. Two days later he was called up to make his first grade premiership debut for South Sydney in the 1938 Round 2 ANZAC Day clash against Eastern Suburbs at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Schmidt would play 3 seasons with South Sydney between 1937 and 1939. He only played 2 first grade premiership club games for South Sydney. He played 23 senior grade club games for South Sydney, whch includes 20 senior grade premiership games and 3 senior grade cup games.
Schmidt was a young 17 year old on debuted in first grade on the wing.
Schmidt's final first grade game for South Sydney was the 1938 Round 3 clash against North Sydney at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Schmidt would continue to play lower grades in 1939. In 1940 he trialed with South Sydney and again in 1941, but was unsuccessful in being graded. Still only 20 years of age, Schmidt joined the U21 Presidents Cup squad in 1940.
