Shankland played in one South Sydney premiership decider in 1935.
Shankland made his way to South Sydney via a brief stint with Eastern Suburbs and playing in the country. He was running a pub in Scone. He made his South Sydney first grade and senior grade debut against Newcastle Division in the 1935 tour match at the Newcastle Showground. Soon after he made his first grade premiership debut in the Round 7 1935 clash against St George at Earl Park
Shankland only played one season with South Sydney playing in 7 first grade games, which included 5 first grade premiership games. He only played one other reserve grade game taking his senior grade game tally to 8 games, of which 6 were premiership senior grade games.
He played his final premiership first grade and senior grade game for South Sydney in the 1935 premiership final against Eastern Suburbs at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
