Stiff was a member of the 1935 South Sydney squad that made the premiership final.
He lived in Mascot and was schooled at Gardeners Road. He was a schoolboys sports star who played NSW Schoolboys at cricket and Aussie Rules. He made his way to South Sydney via the South Sydney Aussie Rules team. He excelled at Aussie Rules, playing for New South Wales at age 17, and being named man of interstate series in the Aussie Rules All States 10 day Carnival.
In 1935 Stiff moved across to Rugby League, and found a place at fullback with South Sydney. He would make his South Sydney senior grade debut in Reserve Grade in Round 1 against University at the Sports Ground. The following week in Round 2 1935 he was promoted and made his first grade premiership debut against the new Canterbury-Bankstown club at Marrickville Oval.
Stiff would play for 3 seasons with South Sydney, playing 25 first grade games, which included 18 first grade premiership matches and 4 first grade cup games. Overall he would play 42 senior grade games for South Sydney, which included 36 premiership games.
Stiff played his final first grade game in the 1937 Round 5 City Cup clash against Western Suburbs at Pratten Park. Jimmy Stiff died tragically in a motorcycle accident a few days before Christmas 1937. In 2003 he was named in the AFL Hall of Fame.
