Sutton was schooled at Gardners Road. Sutton was a all-round sportsman who played and excelled at many sports. He was a noted cricketer over the summer months. He also played Aussie Rules with South Sydney for a number of years, playing in two premiership deciders in 1931 and 1932. In 1931 Sutton was a member of the Rosebury Whoopees XI who beat the South Sydney Rugby League team in a charity cricket match.
In 1934 Sutton came across to Rugby League with a number of fellow Aussie Rules players which included Jimmy Stiff, and was successful in getting graded. He made his senior grade debut in the 1934 Round 12 Third Grade clash against North Sydney at Chatswood Oval. In 1935 he went back to play Aussie Rules and cricket. In 1936 he again came back to South Sydney this time with fellow cricketers. He made his first grade premiership debut in Round 2 1936 clash against Newtown at the new Henson Park.
Sutton, played 3 seasons with South Sydney. He only played two first grade premiership games. He played 30 senior grade games with South Sydney, which included 26 senior grade premiership games and 4 senior grade cup games.
Sutton would play his final first grade premiership game in Round 15 1936 against North Sydney at Chatswood Oval. He play on for another season, playing his final senior grade game in the Round 5 1937 City Cup clash against Western Suburbs at Pratten Park.
