Thompson was a police constable. Thompson was a member of the 1935 and 1939 premiership decider teams for South Sydney. He also played in the Cup-Tie final of 1939 for South Sydney.
Thompson came to South Sydney from the country via Eastern Suburbs, after having been retired for two seasons. He made his South Sydney senior grade and South Sydney first grade premiership debut in 1935 Round 1 against University at the Sport Ground.
Thompson played 5 seasons with South Sydney. He would play all of his senior grade career in first grade, playing in 78 first grade games, which include 64 first grade premiership and 10 first grade cup games. He also played 7 additional short form games for South Sydney.
