Thorn grew on the NSW South Coast. He was a number of players scouted in the country as asked to trial in 1941, after being on the verge of retirement from the game. He was a Police Constable who transfered to Sydney at the end of 1941. Thorn was graded by South Sydney in 1942. While trialing at North Sydney Oval a riot broke out in the stands, Thorn joined fellow playing police officers Felsch, Armstrong and Whitfield to bring this back under control. He played his first senior grade club and premiership match in the 1942 Round 1 Reserve Grade clash against Eastern Suburbs at the Sports Ground. Three weeks later he was called up into first grade and made his first grade club and premiership debut in the 1942 Round 4 match against Canterbury-Bankstown at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Thorn would only play 1 season with South Sydney in 1942. He played 6 first grade club games for South Sydney which included 3 first grade premiership games and 1 first grade cup game. Overall he played 18 senior grade club games for South Sydney, which included 15 senior grade premiership games for South Sydney.
Thorn played his last first grade premiership game for South Sydney in the 1942 Round 14 clash against Newtown at the Sport Ground. The following week he played his final first grade cup game in the 1942 Round 1 City Cup fixture against St George at Hurstville Oval. His final senior grade premiership game for South Sydney was in the 1942 Reserve Grade Minor Semi-Final against North Sydney at the Sydney Cricket Ground. His final first grade club game for South Sydney was in the 1942 end of season tour match against Illawarra in Wollongong. He trialed again with South Sydney in 1943, but was not graded.
