Thorne was a one time Reserve Grade South Sydney premiership winner in 1934.
Thorne was a ballboy during the South Sydney 1920s premiership years. Thorne is a South Sydney junior who played junior reps in 1932 and 1934 for the U21 Presidents Cup team.Thorne made his senior grade debut in the 1934 Round 7 Third Grade clash against Balmain at Drummoyne Oval. Two weeks later he made his Reserve Grade debut in Round 9 against Western Suburbs at the Sports Ground. He would remain in reserve grade during the premiership winning campaign. In Round 2 1935, Thorne mad his first grade premiership debut against the new club Canterbury-Bankstown at Marrickville Oval.
Thorne is a heavy and fast centre.
Thorne played 5 season with South Sydney. He would play 12 first grade game, which included 11 premiership first grade games. He would play 42 senior grade games, which included 36 senior grade premiership games and 5 senior grade cup games.
Late in his career Thorne became a Police Officer. In 1938, Thorne retired to concentrate on his Police duties. He kept fit after retirement by playing for Police teams in cricket and rugby league while in the force. In 1942, he came out of retirement to play for South Sydney. He played his last first grade premiership game in Round 13 1942 against North Sydney at North Sydney Oval.
