Before coming to South Sydney, Timbs was a railway worker, who worked in Gunnedah and Muswellbrook and played rugby league. He represented NSW Railways on their 1938 and 1939 tours of Queensland before coming to Sydney as a railway worker. He enlisted in 1940, and was stationed in Singapore during the fall of Singapore in 1942. He was taken as a prisoner and stationed in the Changi POW camp and then transfreed to the Naoetsu POW camp on the west coast of the Honshu island in Japan. This is where he remained until he was freed by allied forces at the end of the war in 1945. Upon his return to Sydney he was graded by South Sydney. He made his senior grade and first grade club and premiership debut in the 1946 Round 10 clash against North Sydney at the Sports Ground.
Timbs was a strong bush kid, who was a experiance bushman working in the New England cattle properties, but time in POW camps had taken its toll.
Timbs only played one season with South Sydney in 1946. He played 4 first grade club games for South Sydney which included 3 first grade premiership games. Overall he played 5 senior grade career club games for South Sydney which included 4 senior grade premiership games.
Timbs only played a handful of appearances as a forward for South Sydney, as the years of being a POW caught up with him. His final first grade premiership game was in the 1946 Round 12 clash against St George at Hurstville Oval. His final senior grade premiership game was in the 1946 Round 13 Reserve Grade clash against Canterbury-Bankstown at Belmore Oval. His final first grade and senior grade club game for South Sydney was in the first grade end of season tour match against Lithgow in Lithgow.
