Whitfield played in the 1939 premiership decider with South Sydney. He also played in the 1939 State Championship final with South Sydney.
Whitfield is a Patrician Bros Redfern product. who played lower grades with Canterbury-Bankstown before coming across to South Sydney. He made his senior grade premiership debut for South Sydney in the 1939 Round 1 Reserve Grade clash against St George at Earl Park. Mid season he stepped into first grade premiership debut in the 1939 Round 9 clash against Western Suburbs at Pratten Park. He joined the NSW Police force in late 1939.
Whitfield won the Australian junior weight lifting championships in 1942. Whitfield used his weight lifting to improve himself and was an early advocate of all clubs having a gym with weights. He was a tall fit mobile forward who sometimes played centre, prop or hooker.
Whitfield played 7 seasons with South Sydney between 1939 and 1945. He played 46 first grade club games with South Sydney, which included 35 first grade premiership games and 8 first grade cup games. He played 97 senior grade club games with South Sydney, which included 86 senior grade peremiership games. He scored 25 tries throughout his senior grade career with South Sydney.
At the end of 1944 Whitfield briefly retired, but decided to come out of retirement when the next season started. He played his final first grade premiership game in the 1945 Round 3 clash against Eastern Suburbs at the Sports Ground. During the 1945 season, he married Bumper Farrell's(a fellow police officer) sister and was lured to Newtown.
