Albert Why enlisted right at the end of the Great War in October 1918 a month before peace was declared in November. He Played under an alias Albert Carr between 1921 and 1928). Alby Why tells the story: "I commenced my footballing days at Wellington(NSW) in 1917. In 1921 he was at Redfern Oval and was asked to play third grade for the Mascot team as 'A.Carr'. Alby Why candidly admitted in 1929 upon his return from England that he was Alby Carr, while he was registering to play as Albert Why. In 1927 scenes of players and fans circle departing players Alby Carr and Sid Harris after the hatrick of premiership wins as they sing. These scenes gave rise to South Sydney being called the "Pride of the League".
