LOSS 12-13
The Wire from the Hill - This Week
The Wire from the Hill - This Week
Played on the Agricultural Ground in the presence of about 3,000 spectators. After a splendid game, characterised by open and brilliant play, East won by 13 points to 12.
Rosewell kicked off for South Sydney. East rushed the play to South's 25, and Brackenrigg had an unsuccessful shot at goal, from which South forced. Still attacking, East kept inside their opponents' 25 D'Alpuget vainly endeavoured to break through South returned by the agency of A.Butler, and invaded Easts territory. Hard play followed on East's line, A.Butler passing to Davis, and the latter scored. Green's kick failed. South, 3 to nil. South resumed with a passing rush, which ended with Anderson being pushed out about 19 yards from the goalline. McNamara returned this charge, and subsequently blocked the exchange kick. The forwards, with Mable and Brackenrigg in the van, carried play to Souths 25. Miller short kicked, and, the Souths back failing to gather it, he, speeding on, gained possession again and rushed over. Brackenrigg added the goal points Scores East, 5 points, South 3.
Plav livened up, and the game became as fast as anyone could wish. Easts brilliant attacks were met by solld defence. The opposing halves, D'Alpuget and A.Butler, opened up the game and kept the backs ever on the move. McNamara at centre failed lo stop the oncoming South forwards, who swarmed down and rushed ou to the line, where A.Butler wriggled over from a scrum. Again Souths kick failed. Scores South, 6 to 5 Half-time.
During the firat half East's forwards heeled in rare style, D'Alpuget as scrum half opening up play brilliantly. Miller was the pick of the backs, though Rosenfeld played well but had a tendency to hang on. Cann, Davis, and Rosewell played a hard, solid forward game, their scrum work being high-class.
Davis broke away on resuming, passed to H.Butler at top speed and he transferred to Cann, who raked in, and raced on, but was stopped by Miller with a fine tackle. Thus one of the finest dashes ended on the line. Fast rushes became the order, East being called upon to defend. From a scrum Davis secured passed to Cann, then to Leveson to Fry, and the latter ran in and scored. Cann's kick was a poor one. Scores South 9 to 5. East rushed straight away from the kick out, and scored by the agency of Pearce. Brackenrigg's kick made the scores East 10 to 9. With East leading play was very exciting and amid a continued roar of cheering attack after attack was made, to be met by solid defence on the part of South. East's charges and combination kept play in Souths half. Miller, by a magnificent run, evaded all tackles and scored, Brackenrigg failing to convert. East 13 to 9. South took a hand, the forwards, headed by Cann, invaded East's 25, where, after a series of dashes, Anderson from a hard run forced himself over. No goal. South 12 to East 13 Fulltime.
