Selected Round 13 Teams

The attendance at the Sports Ground was not up to expectations, not more than 2500 witnessing this contest. The first half was very even, but two points being scored by each side. But South Sydney early gained the lead in the next spell, which produced much good football. They, romped home with a big margin. Soth Sydney won the toss and A.Joass kicked off for Western Suburbs against, a light breeze. A.Butler put his side in a nice position in the corner, on the right wing with a good line kick, but lost the advantage by not putting the ball fairly in the scrummage. W.S. worked out, but McCabe and Fry started the South Sydney backs going for the opposite wing. H.Butler being, forced, into touch near the flag. Leary dashed through later, but with Medcalf coming at him he passed wildly, and the ball rolled out. Brown changed the attack, by cross-kicking to Collier, but the three-quarter could not reach it. McCabe, Dymant, and Leary were again speeding across field, exchanging short passes. South Sydney were going hard for the line when Medcalf swooped down on the leather and ran it out at the corner. Western Suburbs worked it out to centre, but McCabe came away with a good run along touch and sent it out to Collier, but the pass was forward. Gillett tackled Collier inside the half-way, line, and took the leather from him, then went for goal, but Dymant pulled him down when in the 25. A free against South Sydney was taken by Medcalf, but the ball sailed outside the posts. A few minute's later, however, he opened the scoring for W.S. by kicking a fine penalty goal from about 30 yards out. W.S. 2 to nil. South Sydney attacked with vigor now, and kept the Black and White in their 25 for some minutes. Brown punted high to Medcalf and followed up quickly, the ball from the full-back's kick striking him and rolling to Collier, who was quickly smothered. A.Butler kept the Red and Green on the aggressive by swinging, a long pass out to McCabe, who sent it on to Fry, but the centre cut past Wall, then ran right into the ruck, with the supports. awaiting the pass-out. Butler again kicked, to the goal, and Western Suburbs returned it, but Patcrson was offside, and from the scrum, McCabe, Dymant, and Collier swinging quickly from the corner, Collier came down inches short. A great struggle here ensued, South Sydney making, strenuous efforts to break down the defence. But the visiting forwards worked out a few yards. Though the Red and Green backs were playing with plenty of dash and vigor, they could not break through. The scoring chances were there, but they, were marred by faulty work at the critical moment. Hilliard knocked-on right at the posts, and the whistle sounded. Then Fry hung on after another dash by the local backs, and the further chance was lost. However Western Suburbs were penalised for off-side, Dymant equalised the scores by landing a penalty goal from 40 yards out just prior to the half-time whistle.

A.Butler opened the second spell, and rushed, play to the right, wing. Here Butler passed out to McCabe, who dodged into the runk, where he was held for a moment, yet came through with a great run, and crossed over in the corner, their ran round and scored at the posts. Dymant converted, and South Sydney led by 7 to 2. Hilliard headed another rush by the Red and Green, but Nayior stopped him, and Wall booted up-field. Returning again, McCabe, Fry, and Dymant rushed into the 25, and Coliier made a good attempt to get through, but the defence was too solid. McCabe made a futile attempt, to drop at goal. Then, from near centre, A.Butler found the line on the left wing at the corner flag. From the scrum he whipped it but very smartly, to McCabe, who sent it quickly on to Fry, who cut across goal a few yards, and, passed it to Dymant, to Collier, who wriggled cut, of a tackle and scored a brilliant try midway between the corner and the posts. The movement was executed with lightning, rapidity and faultlessly. Dymant failed to convert. South Sydney, 10 to 2. Western Suburbs, pulling themselves together in the forwards, W.Joass and Thompson dashed, through the ruck with the ball at toe. South Sydney were penalised in the scrum, and H.R.Thompson made a good attempt at goal, the ball sailing just outside the post. A further chain of passes carried Western Suburbs to within the danger zone, but the last pass to McFadyen nvas a grubber, and the chance was lost. They came again from centre, Tully ststtiivg V.West, who veered to the touchline and gave it to McFadyen, with the open field in front. A.Butler came across and tackled in the 25, and he lost the ball. South Sydney rushed to their opponents territory, and had them defending hard, as McCabe, Fry and T.Butler each in turn was floored right on the line, In the nick Western Suburbs were penalised, and A.Butler landed the goal, making South Sydney 12 to 2. Western Suburbs halves were making attempts to open up play, for the backs. A pretty movement between W.West, Nayior and McFadyen carried the side well into the 25 before Brown stopped them. Undeterred, they swung forward once more, and Wall and Nayior ran on to McFadyen, who cut in again to the post, and beating the full-back, scored a good try. Medcalf missed the goal. South Sydney, 12 to 5. South Sydney soon had a further score to their credit, after Hilliard and Leary had, carriod play near the posts, where Nicbolls picked up as the former was floored, and fell over the line. Dymant landed an easy goal. South Sydney, 17 to 5. Western Suburbs repeatedly charged down the left wing. A penalty was taken by A.Joass, who added two points to the score. South Sydney, 17 to 7. S'S came at the Black and White again. When in the 25 Butler whipped it out to McCabe, who went for the corner, and when tackled passed on to Leary, who just got in. Leary failed at goal. South, Sydney 20 to 7. Mr. L.Kearney, referee.

Second Grade - Tour

v Goldfields League, Sydney Sports Ground, 2:00pm

LOSS 3-10

The Goldfields team(Wyalong) met and defeated South Sydney II by 10 points to 3 at the Sports Ground. Scrappy play took place in the first half with neither team pulling together. Eventually South Sydney were penalised, and Leggo kicked a goal. During a mix-up Gardiner crossed the line. South Sydney's backs as a whole played well, but the defence was too solid. There was a good deal more life in the second half, and it was not long before South Sydney's backs asserted themselves, and a result McNamara crossed the line. The kick for goal was a failure and the scores were 5 to 3. Goldfields gave a game and spirited response, and had their opponents flustered for a while. They were, however, driven back and unleased some fair chances. From a scrum Leggo obtained, and dashed across the line. He added the goal. The final scores were Goldfields 10 South Sydney 3.
