2025 - The Cyber View from the Hill

19th Mar 2025

2 from 2 to start 2025

Who would have believed at the start f the year that in 2025 we would be 2 from 2 after 2 games with our horendous injury toll. But here we are in uncharted waters. With the never give up attitude of the team great to see in this gutsy win in extreme heat. We still a bg issue on leaking points on the edge which needs to be addressed. The loss of 3 more players to injury and suspension continues to be a significant issue challenging our depth. 4 competition points in the bag. We off to the swamp against the Sharks, for another difficult away match.

Humphreys snaps victory

While everyone was out on the feet, in the heat of the afternoon, it was Humphreys who once again stole the sow. South Sydney were down by 12 points and had finally drawn even. Cody had just had the ball slip through his fingers as everyone waited for the 5th tackle kick. But with 4 minutes left on the clock, Humphreys took the chance for a fieldgoal and nailed it from 32m out. It put South Sydney in front late in the game, which they held on to win. Another great Humphreys moment.

Walker 100 tries

Walker has progressed up the all time club try scorers list slowly and steadily over the year. And on the weekend he scored his 100th first grade premiership try, all for South Sydney. He joined the likes of Alex Johnston, Merritt, Wearing, Moir, Horder and Bob McCarthy who have also scored 100 first grade premiership tries for South Sydney His try scoring started way back in Round 5 2016 against Manly-Warringah, with Manly-Warringah being his favourite club to score against with 9 tries and Stadium Australia his favourite venue, with 34 tries. Looking forward to many more, well done Cody.

Gray remarkable running

2025 sees Jye Gray a year older, but his running from fullback has moved into the stratosphere. He ran for 280 metres in Round 1 and then for 313 metres in Round 2. Quite a feat when you understand these metres are not coming from length of field line breaks. The last person to run 300m was Alex Johnston back in 2020. He setting a new standard for the club.

Dodd scores on debut

While all eyes were away from Lewis Dodd, he made his South Sydney senior premiership debut in the reserve grade clash against St George-Illawarra. It will take a few weeks to get used to jump in standard here in Australia, especially in defence, but you can see his skills with ball in his hand and in his kicking game. He scored a great solo try and setup another. He won't stay long in the lower grades.

Taylor double

Sam Taylor was stop gap centre in the first half. But in the second half he found his rythm and scored two tries in a second half comeback. The team is off to a slow start but not far off the pace.

U21s reverts to 40 minutes

One big change in 2025 with U21s is the increase of the halves from 35 miuntes to 40 minutes. This part of trying to get the players used to playing longer minutes, as the competition prepares for a return to the NYC format. It was a interesting change and we will see if it helps reduce the gap between U21s and Reserve Grade over time.

Round 2 - Stat Attack

Statistically it was a good game in the heat. Completions dropped to 81% from 85% last week. Errors dropped to 10 from 6 last week. We gave away 3 penalties and 1 6-again calls from 7 last week. Souths Effective 1st tackle improved to a good level of 27.7m from 33.4m last week. Our missed tackles improved to a average level of 31 from 36 last week. Opposition offloads dropped to 13 from 8 last week.

Looking at our left side defence - BentleyHape-Tass-Walker-Koloamatangi (1-5-3-1) dropped to 10 from 9 missed tackles last week. On the right side Myers-Graham-Humphreys-Arrow/Duncan/Sullivan (1-3-3-4) dropped to 11 from 8 missed tackles last week. Ruck defence Keppie/Tatola-Mamouzelos-Moale/Havili-Hubner/Duncan (3-2-4-1) improved to 10 from 18 missed tackles last week.

Our go forward improved to 1737m from 1691m last week. With our props improved to a average 407m compared to 253m last week. Keppie, Moale and JGray made 10+m per run. Keppie, Hubner, Moale, J.Gray, Graham and Tass made 100+m in the match. With J.Gray making 300+m for the match. First person in 5 years to do so. Defensively Mamouzelos was our best in the tackling raking up 40 tackles. Duncan, Tatola and J.Gray didn't miss a tackle.
